Went for a swim in the morning at the WWC, not so many people there when it opened. 2000 yds using the normal protocol, finished in about 41 minutes. It was below 40 deg when I left home, but I got used to the water quickly. Feeling a little better during freestyle swimming with no swim pads or snorkel.
I rode over to the Park n Ride by Via Rancho Pkwy to meet Joe around noon for a ride down to the coast and back. We followed the usual way, up that little climb on Via Rancho Pkwy and then down to Del Dios Hwy. The descent into Rancho Santa Fe was dicey, bike was unstable with lots of crosswind. I need to figure out a long-term solution for this issue. Rode the brakes on the curving portion of the descent. Then we rode through RSF and onto Linea del Cielo. Because this was such an up-and-down ride, I kept getting out in front of Joe, then waiting for him to catch up. It was okay with me, allowed me to push a little harder on the climbs than I would have otherwise. Down to Lomas Santa Fe and to the PCH, where we turned right and stopped at Pizza Port for a slice of pizza and a pint. It was a nice, welcome break, always interesting to talk to Joe. He is teaching a new course this spring on the Catholic sacraments. The ride back was aided at times by a tailwind, although I didn't think it was as breezy on the return as on the way out. I had a pretty decent ride on the full Del Dios climb, starting from La Valle Plateada and going up to the turn onto Via Rancho Pkwy, posting my second-fastest time on Strava. Slowed down after that on the way back into Escondido, although the downhill was thrilling as always, maybe a little more so because there was more car traffic than usual. Home the normal way over the freeway. The day was cool for the most part, sunny but the sun wasn't so warm. My Fitbit almost lasted the entire ride but battery died around the Park n Ride.
