01-07-2024 Ride

This was a tough day.  I heard it raining in the night, was a little surprised, but it was clear when I woke up, so I just delayed my start time a little bit.  Headed through the neighborhood and then through the 4S Ranch neighborhood, up to Ralphs Ranch Rd.  On the early stretches, I felt that it was breezy, and the ride on Alva Rd let me know that it was coming from the north.  Camino del Sur to San Dieguito Rd, where the crosswinds on the downhill were really stiff, causing me to ride the brakes for most of the way down the first and second descents.  Still swirling winds on the flats, and it wasn't completely clear when I was riding into the wind until I got onto Via de la Valle, where I could tell the wind was coming from the northwest.  By the time I got to the coast, it seemed to have shifted to mainly coming from the north, so I was riding right into it when I turned right and headed north.  For much of the time heading up to Carlsbad, I was in my lower chainring, and there were times when I had to pedal going downhill just to maintain 15 mph.  I rode the second half of this stretch with another guy who was suffering like me, our paces generally matched each other, and it was good to have somebody to commiserate with on the conditions.  I rode into Carlsbad Village and stopped for a break at a little park on the west side of the main drag, had a banana and a trail bar.  The ride back was, for the most part, exhilarating, with a 20 mph tailwind to help me along.  Because of that, I had a number of PRs on the stretches heading south.  Around the turn back onto Via de la Valle, I saw that I was running out of energy from the hard push on the outbound section.  So I dialed it back and didn't have too much problem getting to the bottom of 3 Witches.  Was really slow going up, and my slow pace continued on Camino del Sur.  Just no push left in my legs, and my lower back was also a little stressed.  Stayed on Camino del Norte up to Camino San Bernardo, then over to RB Rd and a retrace of the earlier route.  Legs didn't cramp up, and my right calf (which acted up on the previous day's ride) was totally fine.  I was pretty hungry when I got home but not too sore, just tired.  My FitBit ran out of battery a little less than halfway on this route, so my average heartrate is elevated because of the high effort needed to ride into the wind.

Avg speed = 16.1 mph. Total mileage = 60.9 mi
Avg power = 151 W. Weighted avg power = 172 W
Total elevation gain = 2410'
Avg heartrate = 135 bpm
