01-09-2024 Swim/Ride

Went over to the WWC in the morning, was cold but not as cold as the previous day.  Curiously, nobody else was there as the club opened to go swimming.  I ended up having the entire pool to myself for almost an hour, swimming 2500 yds in about 52 min, following standard protocol along with 20 lengths without snorkel or pads.  I also cut down the Christmas tree and put it in the green recycling bin.  Around 11:00, I rode over to Avi's office in CMR, taking the Bernardo Heights Pkwy route.  There, I met him and Jose Doval, who I hadn't seen in quite a while.  We rode back to Carmel Mountain Rd and then over to Twin Peaks Rd to get to Pomerado Rd, which we took up and then down to RB Rd.  Up to Espola Rd, but we turned right onto Bridlewood Rd, riding up and over a short little climb to get to Summer Sage Rd, where we turned right and followed it all the way until it came out onto Espola Rd again.  Up to the high school, then down to Twin Peaks Rd, where we turned left and rode over to Midland Rd.  The guys were keeping up a good pace, and Jose was staying with me when I pushed it a little harder.  Over to Community Rd via Hilleary Pl, then we got onto Poway Rd.  Stayed on the old time trial route until we got to Ted Williams Pkwy, where we switched to the new time trial route back to our meet-up spot.  Was a good ride, I'll try to join them on a more regular basis.  I rode home by staying on the new time trial route for a while but staying on Camino del Norte until I turned right onto Camino San Bernardo.  Over to RB Rd, then home the normal way through the neighborhood.

After I got back home, I had a quick shower and then drove down to Fashion Valley to return the candy thermometer to Williams-Sonoma, since Ann was able to get our old one working again.  Happily, I didn't run into traffic on the trip there or back.  I stopped at Big 5 in RB on the way back and bought a new pair of black running shoes with white soles, to wear while volunteering at the hospital.  Ann got her dental filling replaced at the new dentist that Blair recommended, she was happy with the service and pricing.  In the evening, Emily, Caleb, and I went down to North Park to a place called BottleCraft for a beer and cheese tasting.  It was an enjoyable experience, the beers were definitely esoteric and not altogether great for drinking, but certainly interesting to hear their stories and have different taste sensations.  The paired cheeses were better, not to unusual.  And there were little snacks on the plates as well to mix up the palate.
