10-12-2024 Ride

First time in a while that I didn't ride with the group on a Saturday when we were in town. I needed to hang around the house for Kris Nielson to show up (he ended up getting here after noon, which was frustrating). I took the time to set up my trainer in the garage with the monitor and my phone screen mirrored to it via Google Home. That part worked okay, although it took a while to get everything in place and started (one false start when I tried to switch from MyWhoosh to get some music going and the app closed down and forced me to start my ride over). It was good at the beginning, I had decent power and pretty quickly got into a rhythm. The course was in Australia, and it had a long climb in it that really dropped my average speed. The way I had MyWhoosh set up, it didn't increase the resistance on my Kickr when I was climbing, instead my average speed just dropped. But that route would be a killer if the resistance increased, since there were regular gradients in the 10-15% range. Because my average speed was so low, I ended up having to ride for almost an hour and a half to get to about 20 miles, and I was wiped out at the end. High average heartrate, and I was soaked, both indicating a really hard workout, even though it wasn't reflected in my average speed or distance.

Avg speed = 13.5 mph. Total mileage = 19.8 mi
Avg power = 152 W. Weighted avg power = 158 W
Total elevation gain = 1920'
Avg heartrate = 146 bpm

After I was done, it took me a while to recover. I pulled my left glute muscle during the ride, and that made it hard to sit down. I read a little bit, watched some college football, ate some lunch. I also had a longish nap. In the afternoon I used ChatGPT to try and create a linear least squares model relating Strava's Relative Effort metric and my heartrate zone data. The fit was not great, so I still must be missing some component of the modeling. We met Rob and Isabelle at MexicanBar, a restaurant in Poway near Poway Rd and Pomerado Rd, for dinner, and the food was pretty good. It was a nice evening and it ended fairly early.
