03-31-2025 Run/Swim

Had another rough night sleeping. I woke up after midnight with moderate pain in my jaw, perhaps something like a sinus headache. Couldn't get comfortable, so I got up and ate something, to exercise my jaw. It helped a little bit, I read some and was able to get back to sleep, but it wasn't too refreshing.Got up around 6:00 and looked for the other battery for my Akaso camera, since I didn't think the original one was charging. No luck, still need to find where it went to. I went for a run down by the park, in mist that at times turned to drizzle. This was not a high-energy run, my legs felt tired from the previous day, and perhaps from being under the weather for a week. I ran around the park four times, pretty slow pace but fairly steady. It was pretty hard running back up the hill to get home, legs felt really heavy.

Avg pace = 8:53/mi
Total distance = 5.14 mi
Elapsed moving time = 45:39

I was damp when I got home, and then I changed into my swimsuit to get ready to go to the WWC. Checked my camera battery and it appeared to be charged, which was a pleasant surprise. So, I took it as well. Was raining on the way over and while I waited for the gates to be opened, that wasn't too pleasant. But after putting my stuff in the locker and getting into the water, the rain didn't really make a difference. Instead, I was just really tired, couldn't sustain a 20-stroke cadence at all, and throughout the swim it was usually 22. Arms felt sluggish, and there was no kick in my legs. This was my slowest swim in quite a while, kinda depressing actually. Here are the splits for the 3 500s and the last 400: 9:49, 10:12, 10:18, 8:03. Rode home in light rain and had a cup of coffee to warm up a bit. Later on, I found my other Akaso camera battery as well as the wrist start/stop band. Had a light lunch, and after that I went in the back yard to weed. Removed weeds from the nearer bed with wood bark and started on the bed with decomposed granite. It was drizzling while I was back there but not too heavily. Took a shower after that and read for a bit, including a short nap. Was feeling pretty good in early evening but got out of sorts with Ann about her concern of catching a cold from me, after I felt I was basically non-infectious. So it was a quiet evening, I didn't speak to her. I did watch a little TV after she went to bed.

03-30-2025 Swim/Ride

Woke up early after a decent night's short sleep, less coughing. I did get up and eat a bowl of cereal and a banana to help with the coughing. Later, I got ready for a swim at the WWC. Actually got let in before 8:00, and I had the pool mostly to myself until near the end. Ended up swimming 1600 yds, felt more tired as I went. But my breathing held up, cold seems to be significantly on the wane. Here are my splits: 9:09, 9:39, 9:46, 1:56. Came back and watched some TV before heading out around noon for a ride. I ended up riding the time trial route basically in reverse, with the exception of taking Sabre Springs Pkwy to Springhurst Dr, then turning on Oak Knoll Dr to get to Pomerado Rd. I put in a bigger sustained effort on this ride in a while but felt fine (legs a little tired) at the end.

Avg speed = 17.3 mph (17.3 mph). Total mileage =18.2 mi
Avg power = 159 W. Weighted avg power = 180 W
Total elevation gain = 1020' (1150')
Avg heartrate = 139 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 53 (48)
Training Load = 76
Intensity = 82%

Had a late lunch when I got home, then hung around the house and watched TV for a while. Was able to take an afternoon nap for the first time in a while, and it was refreshing. I went out for a short walk just before dinner to get my steps in. Did the dishes after dinner, then in the evening Ann and I went to get ice cream at Sunny Scoops. It was decent but not worth the high price, don't know how that place stays in business. Watched a little TV before heading to bed.

03-29-2025 Ride

Had a rough night, a lot of coughing. I got up and watched TV for a while, woke up early and did the dishes. Then I rode over to the parking lot by Marco's, our starting point for the day. We had a big group on this day: Arnold, Perse, Andy, Rob, Gio, Nel, Jhonar, Charlie, Aaron, Fritz, Zac, and Joey. Was in the 50s at the start good riding weather for me. We headed down by the park and over the pedestrian bridge to BVP. Then we rode up to Sunset Dr, saw that the road was clear beyond, and kept going. Andy was slow, so I rode with him during this stretch. We rode up to Valley Pkwy and turned right, taking it up to El Norte Pkwy. We waited for the others at the turn, but Andy and Gio had turned left on Valley Pkwy. Fritz went back to find them, and we ended up re-gathering everybody at Citrus Ave and El Norte Pkwy. From there, we rode down to Broadway and then took it up to Jesmond Dene Rd. On the way Rob changed his derailleur batteries. I rode with Andy up the first little climbs, then stopped to help Rob change out his shifter batteries before we made the last climb. Over to the Circle K, where we took a break before continuing. Then it was down Deer Springs Rd to Twin Oaks Valley Rd and over to Buena Creek Rd. Up this little climb and then down the nice descent over to Santa Fe Ave. Several riders took the Inland Rail Trail, while the rest of us rode to Mission Rd and met up with them there. We then rode into Escondido, I rode near the back. Returned to the parking lot via Centre City Pkwy and then the road to get to the back side of the mall. Across the pedestrian bridge and up W Bernardo Dr. Aaron sped away, and I pushed hard to catch up with Fritz, who was also going hard. I passed him too and rode back to the parking lot. We all gathered up, and some of us stayed for pizza and beer at Marco's. I had a soda and hung out, talking mostly to Rob and Gideon. Eric stopped by and we made a date for lunch on the 13th. Then I rode home from there. Felt decent on this ride, which was really flat for this distance.

Avg speed = 15.8 mph (16.1 mph). Total distance = 42.8 mi
Avg power = 135 W. Weighted avg power = 152 W
Total elevation gain = 1870' (2300')
Avg heartrate = 132 bpm
Relative Effort = 89 (88)
Training Load = 159
Intensity = 69%

I had a quiet afternoon. Did some research into whether I could program access to the security cameras. Initial results not promising. I also talked to Ben and, later, Mom. She was in pretty good spirits, railed a little bit about recent events but didn't get too stirred up. Ate dinner and had a quiet evening, watching TV.

03-28-2025 Walk

Had a rough night, coughing quite a bit. It got so bad in the middle of the night that I got up and cleaned the dishes from the previous evening. I got up a little late and decided to take it easy on this day after a busy previous day. Late in the morning Ann and I planted and watered the peach tree. I also put a chicken wire frame around the root base to discourage any future gophers. Talked to Ben about a minor flare-up at the lake house associated with takin down a hedge in the back yard. Watched some TV, then went for an hour long walk to get close to my step target, then did a little weeding of the back patio before dinner. Some more TV in the evening, trying to rest up.

03-27-2025 Ride/Hike

Had an uneven night sleeping, clearing out congestion by coughing a lot. I got ready for a bike ride when I got up. Not intending to ride hard, just moderate pace and slowing on climbs. Headed through the neighborhood and out RB Rd to Camino del Sur. Down to San Dieguito Rd descending to the flats and over to El Camino Real. Left turn there and up into Del Mar Heights. That was a slow, steady climb, followed by the gradual descent to the 56 bike path. I took that back to Camino del Sur, then rode home the normal way via Carmel Valley Rd.

Avg speed = 15.8 mph (16.0 mph). Total mileage = 32.1 mi
Avg power = 130 W. Weighted avg power = 164 W
Total elevation gain = 2020' (2200')
Avg heartrate = 124 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 51 (54)
Training Load = 121
Intensity = 75%

Got home and got ready to go to El Plantio to pick up a peach tree and some vegetables for the garden. I talked to Ben when I got home, he was animated again and I had to push back. I think he took the feedback okay. I ate some food and then headed over to Andy's house to go with him to Lake Poway and hike up to Potato Chip Rock. The hike up went smoothly, he was slower but I waited for him at various times. It took us around 90 minutes to get to the top, where after a short while we had the space to ourselves. We had a snack, then headed back down, with me and Andy descending at the same pace. Got back home around 5:40 and called Mom to hear her thoughts on the Visiting Angels care she is receiving. Call went reasonably well, then Laura and I talked about Joe's current situation, which is a little dicey. He has a good lead on a finance position job but it looks like he's not going to get tenure. We talked about that as well as John Stanton's passing. After the call, I had some lasagna and then called it a night after a long day.

03-26-2025 Ride/Hike

Woke up after an okay night's sleep, got ready for a bike ride with John from home. Also put some oil in the car. Was feeling okay, not so much congestion and only occasional coughs, not sustained. We left a little after 7:30, down by the park and over the freeway to BVP, taking it up to Sunset Dr. There was a fair amount of traffic to contend with, and the roads were damp, with some mist in the air. We headed up to Juniper St and took it into town, turning left on Grand Ave and then right on Kalmia St to get to Valley Pkwy. Over to Broadway, which we took north to Jesmond Dene Rd. Around this point, the mist started to get a little more heavy. It never actually rained, but there were times when it felt like we were riding in rainy conditions. Up Jesmond Dene Rd to get to Centre City Pkwy, taking it up to Deer Springs Rd. At this point, I made the decision not to go down that hill in dicey road conditions, instead turning left onto Mesa Rock Rd and following it south along the freeway back to Centre City Pkwy. We then rode up to Nutmeg St, turning right there and using it to get to Country Club Ln. Right turn there, then through that neighborhood over to El Norte Pkwy, where we took another right. Rode until the road turned into Borden Rd, then followed it until turning left on Vineyard Rd. Over to Woodward St, turning left there and riding to Mission Rd. Streets were wet and dirty at this point and stayed that way all the way into Escondido. We took the route to Valley Pkwy via Tulip St, then headed to Quince St for a right turn there. Rode up to 13th Ave and then used it to get back to Centre City Pkwy. From there, it was the usual way back home across the freeway, and the roads got progressively drier as we rode from this point. John held up pretty well on this 32-mile ride, which is a good sign for future rides together.

Avg speed = 15.4 mph (15.5 mph). Total mileage = 32.7 mi
Avg power = 133 W. Weighted avg power = 149 W
Total elevation gain = 1450' (1800')
Avg heartrate = 122 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 40 (41)
Training Load = 112
Intensity = 68%

I made smoothies using some items I had bought in an early-morning store run, they were tasty. After John left, I had the house to myself for a bit, so I caught up on blogging. Then I talked to Ben at length about recent issues with Ross taking control of a decision relating to the disposition of the boat dock. Had some lunch, then Ben called again with news of action from Ross's apparent command decision to move forward with completely removing the boat dock, which got Mom really upset, rightfully so. This is a mess that is going to have repercussions and that will leave ill feeling among the five of us. So, not good at all.

03-25-2025 Walk

Woke up feeling a little better, suggesting that this wasn't going to be a bad cold. I had another long walk in the pre-dawn morning, felt okay during the walk. When I got back, I met Vita, the other home healthcare aide. She is also very nice, professional, and caring. I talked with Mom about her plans moving forward, and it seems that she is at least considering future plans to move into an assisted care facility. It was a restful morning in general, I packed up and made some food for the flight. Stopped to get some Mexican food on the way to the airport, was a little rushed but made it in enough time. I caught the shuttle from the rental car center (Budget car rental went smoothly) to the International terminal, then ate my bean soft tacos in the terminal building before going through security. No issues getting to the gate, and the plane left on time, less than 1/3 full, I'm guessing. I had a little nap, listened to some music, then watched a couple of episodes of Ozark, which got me close to touch-down. Ann picked me up from the airport, and we had dinner and drinks at a restaurant in Little Italy that wasn't so great. Drive home didn't have much traffic, and I had a quiet evening, sleeping in the office to reduce the risk of passing my cold on to Ann.

03-24-2025 Walk

Woke up feeling off-sorts, had a bit of a sore throat and felt like I was coming down with a cold. Not great. The night had been interesting, there was a really large thunderstorm that came through the area, but it was done by the time I got up. Mom was up early, turns out she didn't have a good night's rest. I went for an extended walk when it was still dark out at the beginning, walking through the neighborhoods on the south side of Foley Rd and listening to episodes of The Daily. I got back and met Bridget, one of the home healthcare aides watching Mom on weekdays. She is nice, very caring and competent, and throughout the day she took time to do some laundry and clean the dishes. Mom had a rough morning, she was having some trouble taking breaths. I eventually got her to drink some coffee, and that perked her up quite a bit. She started to behave more normally, and I decided to go ahead with plans to meet Mark for lunch at a salad restaurant, Salata, on Heights Blvd off I-10. We had a good discussion, mostly about Mom's current and future situation, including disposition of the house and all of the stuff in it. I think he and I are pretty much on the same page, but there could be some disagreement with Ben and Ross about the house regarding timing and putting in money to fix it up. He also shared a little about how things are going at home and with his adjusting to retirement. From there, I drove back to the lake house, talked to Mom for a little bit, then had a nap. In the late afternoon, I drove over to Ben's house through rush hour traffic on FM 1960, and that was pretty miserable. Then he and Abigail led me over to Matthew and Lauren's house for a family gathering, with all Ben's kids and their kids as well as Lauren's sister Amber, her husband, and their son Roman. Lauren's dad and stepmother were there as well. Was a little awkward for me initially, but I jumped in and it ended up being a nice time. Got the chance to talk more with Rebecca and Hannah, both of whom have a lot going on these days. I was really glad I went, although it made for a long day, including the drive back from his place to the lake house.

03-23-2025 Run

Had a decent night's sleep, decided on a donut run when I got up, while it was still dark. I drove to Shipley in Crosby and ate the donuts on the drive back. It was starting to lighten up when I got to the lake house, so I got ready for a slow run through the neighborhood. Pace was 2 minutes per mile slower that the previous day, but I still felt like I was working out. Legs and feet held up and also told me that I could use a rest day on Monday.

Avg pace = 9:26/mi
Total distance = 4.51 mi
Elapsed moving time =42:31
Avg heartrate = 132 bpm
Relative Effort = 16

It was overcast and muggy during the run, and I worked up a good sweat. Had a shower when I got back and finished a book, Resurrection Walk, by Michael Connelly. It was decent, not great literature, but the pacing moved quickly and had a happy ending. Mickey Haller and Harry Bosch were both featured in the book, about a lady wrongly accused of murdering her ex-husband, a gang-affiliated sheriff's deputy. And I started Infinity Gate, by M.R. Carey, a sci-fi book about existence in a multiverse called the Pandominion. The day was a quiet one, spent talking with Mom and, later, Ross. She rested a lot, and I watched some NCAA basketball. Made dinner for her, pesto pasta and garlic bread. They weren't great, but she ate pretty well. In the evening I went out for a short-ish walk to get my steps in.

03-22-2025 Run

Had a pretty good night's sleep, read a bit. I got ready for a run when I got up, talked briefly to Ross before heading out. I ran over to Sundance Cove and around that subdivision before heading back. I added a little distance at the end to get close to 5 miles. It was nice running weather.

Avg pace = 7:38/mi
Total distance = 4.95 mi
Elapsed moving time = 37:47
Avg heartrate =152 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 59

Talked to Ross some more when I got home, actually we talked quite a bit through the morning and into the afternoon. Mom joined us after a bit, looked rough until she had some coffee in her. She later went back to wash up and to rest afterwards. In the afternoon, I drove to Walmart and Aldi to get some groceries. Ross and I chatted after I got back, then he left to go see Terry. I listened to Mom's stories, fixed her Xfinity remote control to turn the TV on and off, then made stir fry vegetables and chicken for dinner. She ate well, we talked through dinner and after, while I cleaned the kitchen. I watched some basketball in the evening before going out for a short walk to get my steps in. I was unpleasantly surprised when I got back to see a possum on the front porch. It ran away when I got closer, but it was a shock. Read before going to sleep.

03-21-2025 Walk/Swim

Travel day, so I got up early, had some breakfast, then did an extended walk through the neighborhood to the WWC for a swim. It was chilly enough to wear sweats and a hoodie on the way over. The swim wasn't a great one, I am still not feeling smooth in the water. On this day, I was more commonly at 21-22 strokes in the latter laps. I had a fast first 500 but tailed off significantly in the second and third 500s. Here are my splits for the 1600 yds I swam: 9:00, 9:29, 9:44, 1:56.

Walked back home from there and had a little time to finish packing and get ready for my trip. While home, I put key information into a draft of my birthday message to John before we left the house. Trip down to the airport was smooth, and I was really glad for TSA Pre-check, where the line was much shorter. The flight left on time and arrived early. I was at the back of the plane, but I walked quickly through the airport and to the stop for the rental car shuttle. Had set up FastBreak with Budget, so I walked right out to the row of cars picked one, and was on my way. Got to Mom's house around 6:50 and visited with her in her room for a while before eating a little something for dinner and going to sleep fairly early.

03-20-2025 Run/Swim

Slept well, got up a little early and ate breakfast. Then I got ready for a run. It was colder than I thought it would be once I got outside. I was intentional about starting fast, and it was made easier by running downhill toward the park. I ran around the park twice, then headed back home. Felt good throughout, but that last run uphill on Aguamiel Rd was a chore.

Avg pace = 7:26/mi
Total distance = 3.21.mi
Elapsed moving time = 23:53
Avg heartrate = 145 (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 29

I was home before 7:30, had a little time to get ready for a swim at the WWC. Ann was sleeping in the office, so I was quiet as I got my stuff out of it. I had the pool to myself at the start and the two adjacent lanes remained free throughout. For the first 1000, I tried to use a lengthened stroke, around 18. Was successful but slower. On the second 1000, I went back to 20 strokes and was marginally faster than the second 500. Still, this was a slow 2000 for me, really felt ragged on the last 500. Here are my splits: 9:36, 10:02, 9:52, 9:59. It's a little surprising how quickly my long-distance swimming form degraded over the 3 weeks I was out of the pool. Watched a little March Madness in the morning, then Ann and I headed over to Oggi's Pizza on Rancho Carmel Dr to meet Dennis, Karen, John, and Vivian for lunch while the NCAA basketball tournament was on TV. We actually didn't watch much TV, spent more time talking. I was sitting by Karen, so we chatted a lot about how things are going. After lunch, I didn't capture much of what I did, so am assuming it was a relatively quiet afternoon and evening, probably with watching some more basketball but not much else.

03-19-2025 Ride

Woke up after sleeping well but getting up in the night to watch TV and eat. Got ready for a bike ride with a cold starting temperature. Through the neighborhood to Matinal Rd and then over to W Bernardo Dr. Then it was to RB Rd, following the normal route to John's place from there. I was running a little late, so I pushed myself a little harder than usual. Jayden and Vivian were out front to say hi when I got there. We rode back down to Poway Rd and followed the old time trial route from there, at modest pace. Talked a bit about professional cycling as well as our trip to Japan. We rode back to Poway Rd and turned on Carriage Rd to get over to Oak Knoll Rd. Took that back to Pomerado Rd and turned left to get to Old Pomerado Rd. Up to Scripps-Poway Pkwy, then the last little climb to Springbrook Rd. Back to John's house the normal way from there. John made smoothies and we chatted for a while. Then I rode home the normal way via Bernardo Center Dr, doing pretty well on the Pomerado Rd stretch. Weather in the latter part of the ride was ideal, actually starting to feel warm.

Avg speed = 15.4 mph (15.6 mph). Total mileage = 39.2 mi
Avg power = 132 W. Weighted avg power = 153 W
Total elevation gain = 2230' (2500')
Avg heartrate = 118 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 44 (46)
Training Load = 137
Intensity = 70%

I had a little time to relax before getting ready for my volunteer shift at the hospital. I went there early and used a coupon to get some French fries and a Coke before starting the shift. It was pretty busy throughout, no room cleans in the first half and a bunch in the second. I stopped at Sprouts on the way home and got some fruit. Watched NCAA basketball in the evening, otherwise it was quiet.

03-18-2025 Ride

Woke up after a decent night's sleep, interrupted by a period where I got up and watched some TV. I was supposed to meet Andy at his place for a coffee ride, but it wasn't until 9:00. Got ready and started over there around 8:40, taking the time trial route to Bernardo Oaks Dr. We left from his place a little after 9:00 and headed over to Pomerado Rd via Rios Rd. This was an easy-paced ride where I followed him and his pace for most of it. Up to Ted Williams Pkwy, turning right there and taking it to Rancho Carmel Dr, where we turned and got onto the 56 bike path. We rode down to Camino del Sur and turned right there to get to the Peet's Coffee in the shopping center on the northwest corner of the 56 and Camino del Sur. We talked about Roya and her two daughters Rasa and Raha, they met via an online dating site. He seems happy, no plans to get married as far as I can tell, both like their independence. Then we headed back using Camino del Sur to Carmel Valley Rd, then up Bernardo Center Dr into RB, turning on Lomica Dr and taking several surface streets in his neighborhood to get back to his house. I rode home reversing the route I had taken to get there. I'm hoping to make this a regular occurrence ride with Andy.

Avg speed = 12.9 mph (13.0 mph). Total mileage = 21.9 mi
Avg power = 110 W. Weighted avg power = 139 W
Total elevation gain = 1680' (1800')
Avg heartrate = 110 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 23 (24)
Training Load = 78
Intensity = 63%

I had a light lunch - some cheese and crackers - when I got back, then I went into the back yard and continued weeding. Finished up the first bed as well as the pea gravel path. There are still two more beds back there, the other one with bark doesn't look so bad, and I intend to turn over the soil in the bed with decomposed granite. While I was out there, the appliance repair guy came and fixed our microwave, it wasn't cheap. Then Ann and I went to 7-Eleven and got Slurpees with a discount code from T-Mobile. We thought both were free, but apparently our account only got one free. The guy ended up giving both of them to us for free. Quiet evening.

03-17-2025 Swim/Run

Got up in the middle of the night and watched the end of an Endeavour episode. I'm hungry in the middle of the night as well, still working through jet lag effects. I got ready for a swim at the WWC, looked all over for my action camera and eventually found it under the bed in the office, it must have fallen off the bed where I put it. There was a big line of people waiting to sign up for summer camp, but they had a different line to be in, so no delay. I swam an initial 500, then a set of 5 100s every 2:30 (so 45-50 seconds of rest in between), then a final 550 with the push buoy. Even with the push buoy, my stroke count was 19-20, was more like 18-19 on the 100s. I could feel it in my shoulders after this workout. Here are the splits: 9:05, 1:38, 1:41, 1:41, 1:41, 1:43, 9:15, 0:56. After the swim, I changed into my running gear and ran the 5k route at decent but not all-out pace. Felt a little winded going up the small climbs on this run, since all of my running in Japan was relatively flat.

Avg pace = 7:48/mi
Total distance = 3.12 mi
Elapsed moving time = 24:21
Avg heartrate = 147 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 31

Made some coffee when I got home, that tasted really good. I worked in the back yard, continuing to weed one of the bark-covered beds. Later, I also gave my bike a wipe-down and had an extended nap and reading time, probably not so good for getting over jet lag. Evening was also a quiet one, with more dozing off. Not sure why I was so tired on this day.

03-16-2025 Ride

Woke up quite early, still battling jet lag effects, so I watched a couple of episodes of the original Daredevil series. It promised to be a clear day, which meant that it was colder in the morning. So I waited a little longer than usual to go on my bike ride. Headed down by the park and across the freeway, taking the back way behind the mall and through Kit Carson Park to get to El Ku Ave and Escondido Blvd. I tried to maintain a steady pace but knew it would not be as fast as previous times, as it will take me a while to get back into cycling shape. Up to Citracado Pkwy and then over to Centre City Pkwy, taking this through town and turning left on Washington Ave, right on Quince St, and left again on Mission Ave. Headed into San Marcos, eventually using a pedestrian walkway to get directly onto Twin Oaks Valley Rd. This initial stretch went faster than I thought, there isn't much of an uphill gradient here, just enough to matter. I took this road to Deer Springs Rd and then up the climb to I-15 and across. From there, it was a straight shot on Centre City Pkwy all the way back through Escondido and using the normal route via the freeway to get back to W Bernardo Dr. A little painful for the last two climbs, but they're short. Legs felt good at the end, not so tired from the previous day, which was a little surprising to me.

Avg speed = 16.7 mph (16.9 mph). Total mileage = 30.6 mi
Avg power = 144 W. Weighted avg power = 162 W
Total elevation gain = 1240' (1530')
Avg heartrate = 120 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 35 (37)
Training Load = 111

Ann was still in bed, asleep, when I got home. She is having a lot of issues with jet lag as well as a nagging cough that she can't shake. I ate some lunch, cleaned up some vacation photos on my phone, and eventually went out into the back yard to continue weeding (for about an hour). When I went back in, I decided to set up the second security webcam in the garage, so that it can view the car and my bikes. It all went pretty smoothly. I also ordered, on Amazon, some additional cables, plugs, and a new power bank to use in general and in particular for the security webcam in the house. Quiet evening.

03-15-2025 Ride

Had a restless night sleeping, I was up around midnight, couldn't get back to sleep due to jet lag, so I watched some TV, ate a little food, and read. I thought about how to use battery backups for the indoor security cameras as well as the WiFi gateway. Eventually, I got back to sleep and then woke up a little before 6:00. Unfortunately, I went back to sleep, only to way up at 6:50 and have to rush to get to the starting point for the Bisikleta ride. I took the shortest, straight route and got there around 7:25, but I wasn't the only one who was late. In fact, I was the first one there, other than Ray, who was at the Starbucks getting coffee. Eventually, others showed up, so that when we rolled out around 7:50, here were the riders: Ray, Jed, Arnold, Joey, and Fritz. We kept a pretty easy pace on the way out, and generally throughout this ride. Over to San Dieguito Rd, turning there and heading down into Fairbanks Ranch. I was at the back, sweeping, and I noticed some raindrops and threatening skies as we descended. Not a great sign. When we got onto the flats, the rain stopped, but we still had to watch out for wet roads and lots of debris on the side. We had decent, not fast, pace line across the flats, then took El Camino Real to get to Via de la Valle. This stretch of road was particularly treacherous in the bike lane, and at one point my wheel skidded as I ran over or through something. But I stayed upright, and we made it down to the freeway, after which it was much better. To PCH, turning left there to keep it a shorter ride as we rode into and through Del Mar, again at easy pace. The group decided to ride up Torrey Pines, so we headed down into the park and had a short break by the restrooms at the bottom of the inside route. I started up this route slowly but eventually pushed my pace a little bit to catch the others, all except for Fritz, who spent much of the day in or near the front. Arnold followed me right up the climb. We got to the top, and Ray advocated for going down and up again, this time on the outside. So we did. I rode down at the back with Joey, then back up the climb with her as well, sharing a little about our trip to Japan. She and Zac had recently been in Hawaii and did an epic ride there, where they ran out of water about halfway through and had to refill their bottles from a sketchy bathroom tap. Down the hill again and over to Carmel Valley Rd, where we turned (again, I was riding at the back for most of this time) and rode over to the 56 bike path. On the stretch back to the Carmel Valley Rd intersection, I was riding closer to the front and pushing my pace somewhat. From there, we had another pace line toward Camino del Sur. It started to break up on the last little climb, and Fritz and I rode away from the others. At the turn there, I was back to the rear of the group until we got to the little climb up to Carmel Valley Rd. Ray was riding with Joey and talking with her, so, knowing that she wasn't going to get dropped, I rode ahead. The others were pretty far out in front, and I had to put in a pretty big effort to catch up to them before we got back to San Dieguito Rd. From there, it was the four of us riding together for a while, with me following Fritz in the front. He kept his foot on the gas, and it was another big effort for me to stay on his wheel while the others fell back. We rode back to the starting point together. I was surprised that my legs held out without cramping; granted it wasn't a fast-paced ride, but there were several places where I was pushing pretty hard for my current fitness level. Stayed around until everybody got back, talked to the others, including Joey about getting together with her and Zac for a Thursday run at the UCSD track. That sounds like fun, will have to plan and do that soon. I took the new default route back home, pretty slowly. Again, I was glad that my legs held out the whole way and that we ended up having pretty decent weather, after the initial rain scare.

Was just a little hungry when I got home around 11:00, early for a Saturday ride. I ate a little lunch, then worked out in the backyard for a while, starting the annual spring weeding process again. I'm disappointed by the apparent failure of the ground cloth and bark that we put in to stop weeds from sprouting up through it. Not sure what to do next, maybe apply another, impermeable, layer of ground cloth over it? After that exercise, I was tired again, so I had another nap, again a longish one, and felt better afterwards. I asked the Claude AI if it could help me get my Yahoo Mail account added to Outlook, and after one iteration it was able to point out where I had failed in previous times. So, success! During the day I also set up the security camera with a battery pack to see how long it will last. Having that camera on battery involves a lot fewer unsightly cables to have to deal with. And I talked to Ben in the early evening about Mom and her current situation. Hoping to get together with him and his family on Saturday some time.

03-14-2024 Swim/Virtual Ride

Woke up after getting up a couple of times in the night (<>) and watching an episode of Andor. Still, I slept okay for first night with jet lag, although I woke up feeling a little groggy. Had some breakfast, then got ready for my first swim in a while. It was a little chilly on the ride over to the WWC but not raining. Swam for 1550 yds, with my first 500 feeling okay but the last 1050 being pretty ragged, getting worse in technique as I swam. Here are my splits for the swim: 9:16, 9:39, 9:48, 1:00. Next swim will include some interval training, still focusing on shorter distances until I start feeling more consistent in my stroke, which was around 20 until near the end. I had a quiet rest of the morning at home, worked on backing up and starting to clean up my vacation photos and videos. Had gotten a couple of indoor videocams from Temu while I was gone, so I worked on figuring out how to set one up as an in-home security camera. It took a while, but I was successful in having it serve as a monitor for watching our front door. I had a longer nap in the early afternoon, still jet-lagged. Then in mid-afternoon, I went into the garage and set everything up for a virtual ride using MyWhoosh. Route was generally flat with just one notable climb. It felt good to be pedaling, but I wish I could have gone outside, where the rainy weather was persistent throughout the day and evening.

After dinner, I still needed to get some steps in, so I walked around the block and a little bit more. Then I watched some TV before going to bed. Ann was coughing quite a bit, so I slept in the office so as not to be disturbed.

03-13-2025 Run/Walk

Good night's rest, with a relatively short reading period in the early morning. No congestion but a little dry throat. It was comparatively warm and clear when I got up and went out for a walk with periodic intervals of slow jogging. Headed over to the coast and then walked/jogged east for a couple of miles before turning around and heading back the same way.

Avg pace = 12:56/mi
Total distance = 4.03 mi
Elapsed moving time = 52:02

Got back, and it was a leisurely prep for our big travel day back. Had a shower and a shave, packed up while Ann went to a bakery and brought coffee and pastries back. We walked to a 7-Eleven to charge our Suica cards, hopefully for the last time, then to a monorail station for the first leg of the trip. Then it was a long train ride through Yokohama to a transfer station to get to Narita Airport. The second train was some kind of local, took 1:45 to get there, which seemed interminable. As if that wasn't slow enough we caught the true local train to Narita, it seemed like it stopped at every station. I was glad we left as early as we did, since we got into the airport a little before 12:30. Through check-in and security smoothly, so we had lunch (Ann found a place with vegetarian options) and got some food for the flight at 7-Eleven. The flight itself was long in that I didn't get very much sleep, uncharacteristically. I watched the latest MI movie again, then finished the last episodes of The Queen's Gambit. The storyline and plot in the last couple of episodes was predictable and a little too perfect for my taste. Finished the last episode with just a little time left in the flight. We got off the plane and then quickly through customs using the Mobile Passport Control app. Waited about 15 minutes for the shuttle back to the Embassy Suites where we'd parked our car. The drive back was exhausting, as I was tired and the weather was overcast and rainy most of the way, at times heavily. Got home, was glad to be there, unpacked and made sure to back up my trip photos. Then I had a little nap, felt much better afterwards. Ann got groceries and we had a light dinner and a quiet evening.

03-12-2025 Walks

8% grade steepest in Japan and second steepest in the world. 3 switchbacks, where train changed direction. Water from tank sprinkled on tracks on sharp uphill curves, smaller cars to accommodate sharp turns. Driver in front, conductor in back. Tunnels over 100 years old.

The Hakone Tozan train ride up to Gora was interesting and scenic (see above). When we got to Gora, the sun came out, so we decided to keep going up via the cable car and the ropeway.

Cable car is 1.2 km long, 200 m elevation gain, opened in 1921

Ropeway takes 8 minutes to Owakudani, elevation at top is 1100 m. Then 10+ minutes to Togendai, where we got off the aerial tram at Lake Ashi. Pirate-themed ships, for some reason, taking visitors across the lake. There were also swan paddle boats, but I resisted the urge. Coffee and a beer at Brasserie Yamabiko. Forever to get a pour-over coffee, but vibe was nice. Big Joni Mitchell fans

Owakudani volcanic eruption about 3000 years ago

Cafe Douce

Slept pretty well, not as vivid a dreaming cycle. I ate a big breakfast after I got up, thinking (correctly) that it might be a long time to lunch. Then we finished packing and cleaning and walked back to Hakone-Yumoto Station, where we purchased 1-day passes for the Hakone Tozan Rail train. We rode it up to Gora, took about 40 minutes and was an interesting and scenic ride. In Gora, we walked around a little bit, not much to see, to we bought another 1-day pass for the cable car and ropeway. This excursion up to Lake Ashi was pretty cool, would have been better if the weather had been clearer. We went straight up and then down to Togendai, by Lake Ashi. Walk around here was mildly interesting.

It was fogged in on the way down and steadily raining. We didn't stop at Gora, just got on the train and rode to the next station, where we got off and found a little place, Cafe Douce, where they even had vegetarian menu options. Was worried that I wouldn't be able to find something to eat. Food was edible, not great. We got on the next train going back to Hakone-Yumoto. It was crowded, so I ended up standing, which worked out okay. Got to see more closely how the train executed its switchbacks, and that was fascinating. From there, we used out 1-day pass to get back to Odawara after retrieving our stuff from the locker. Recharged our Suica cards with a little bit of money while there, then caught the train to our last Airbnb in Kamakura. We changed trains once on the way,and it went smoothly. The walk from the train station to the Airbnb was a wet one, we saw the hardest rain yet. I was very thankful for my umbrella, it kept me mostly dry, but my backpack get a little wet. Ann was soaked, but her coat and shoes kept her dry. I used most of our remaining groceries to prepare dinner - stir fry with pasta and pesto sauce. It was a quiet last evening in Japan.

03-11-2025 Walk

Travel day. I had some quite vivid, continuing dreams during the night, so sleep wasn't so great. Got ready to check out, finishing packing and cleaning. It was sprinkling when we left, took subway lines to Shinkansen station and got there with enough time to grab a coffee (American-style strong) before boarding the train. This was a 3+ hour ride to Hakone area, where we had hoped to get some good views of Mt Fuji. But it was overcast, so that didn't work out as intended. The train was a long one, stopped for extended times at many of the stations, probably to let other trains go past. We got into Odawara Station after noon and had lunch at a decent Nepalese restaurant near the station. Then we stuffed our bags into a locker at the station and walked over to Odawara Castle nearby. It was a leisurely tour of this minor monument, reconstructed in 1960, then we walked back to the station, retrieved our gear, and took a local train to the neighborhood by our Airbnb. This was in a tiny village called Yumoto, probably the smallest area we've stayed in while in Japan. We walked from the station in misty conditions, had some trouble finding the building but eventually got there. Place was basic, had some crazy low-hanging lights that I kept bumping into. We settled out stuff and walked to a nearby 7-Eleven to get some breakfast food. Then we walked back into town to Gora Brewery for a drink. It was a nice place, not crowded on a rainy Tuesday night. The walk there was a pretty steep uphill climb, Ann was winded when we reached the top. Was steadily raining, so I was glad for my cheap umbrella. On the way back, I accidentally picked up somebody else's umbrella and had to backtrack. Walk back to the Airbnb was easier but still quite wet. I boiled up some of the millet packets that Ann had bought earlier. They weren't what we thought they were, and I really had to cook them down and mix them with some stir fry vegetables to make them palatable. A quiet end to the evening from there.

03-10-2025 Run/Walk

Woke up around 3:00, couldn't get back to sleep, so I started a new book, Erik Larson's The Demon of Rest, about the events leading up to the shelling of Ft Sumter in South Carolina and the start of the Civil War. I was feeling a little congested, could be that I've caught the cold that Ann has. I went back to sleep after 5:00 and woke up feeling a little better, enough to go out for a short run at a little faster pace than the previous day. Followed a similar route to the road by the larger river west of where we were staying, still had to stop regularly at intersections. Felt fine during the run.

Avg pace = 7:54/mi
Total distance = 3.36 mi
Elapsed running time = 26:32
Avg heartrate = 134 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 12

Ann was still asleep when I got back but got up not too long after. I ate some pancakes and a banana for breakfast, took a shower. Still was feeling a little bit off but not too bad. I read some more, then in mid-morning Ann and I walked to the JR train station and took the train to Nara. Train came into Nara Station, and it was around a mile to the park where the deer were concentrated. On the way, we walked through the grounds of Kohfuku-ji Temple. Nothing particularly noteworthy there, IMHO. Then we walked over to an area where the Nara deer were concentrated. Lots of people, lots of deer. They were selling crackers to feed to the deer, who would bow for you if you bowed first and particularly if you had food for them. They were fairly insistent when food was offered but generally left you alone if you didn't have anything to offer. One male grabbed the map out of Ann's hands and chewed off a corner before letting it go. That was pretty funny. We walked through a couple more areas where there were a lot of deer, didn't buy any crackers for them. We walked over to another temple area and looked in but didn't pay to walk through. From there, it was time to head back to the station. We took a different route, not much more interesting other than seeing a little girl get head-butted by a deer. That must have hurt, but she seemed more frightened than injured. Back to the station with about 5 minutes before our train left, which cut it a little close but all good. Train back and walk back to Airbnb went smoothly. We chilled out in the afternoon, I made stir fry for lunch and had a short nap, felt better afterwards. In the late afternoon we walked over to the Dotonbori neighborhood, which is touristy and funky. We ate okonomiyaki at this great little place called Oko-Fun Bar, which had just two people working there, the one taking orders (I think she's the owner) and the cook. Serve yourself drinks on the honor system. Just a great vibe, and the food was plentiful and delicious. After dinner, we walked through the neighborhood, was quite crowded for a Monday night. The rest of Osaka was meh for me, but this area was a real treat. Walked back after that and packed up our stuff, cleaning the place as well.

03-09-2025 Run/Walk

Woke up, Ann was coughing quite a bit in the night. I went for a run, trying to find a nice river path, but no success. It seems we are in the heart of the city, no large parks nearby that I could see on a map. I ran up to where there is a river channel, ran along it looking for a path but not finding one, so I turned around and ran north along city streets to a larger river. Crossed over the river on a pedestrian walkway, but there wasn't a path on that side either. Frustrating. So I ran along side streets, not much traffic, out to about 2 miles before heading around a city block and coming back. Legs felt fine, it was hard to keep up a faster pace because of the stopping and starting at intersections.

Avg pace = 8:37/mi
Total distance = 4.00 mi
Elapsed moving time = 34:31
Avg heartrate = 133 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 15

Got back and had some toast for breakfast. Ann and I then took the subway over to Osaka Castle Park. It was a longish walk from the subway station, but it was a nice cleat day for a change. The park square was busy with locals and tourists, and the castle was uncomfortably crowded. The site had historical significance, but the castle itself was built in the early 20th century. Inside the castle were a bunch of exhibits about several warring factions, the Tokugawa shogunate against the Torotomi clan, and The Summer War. Not very interesting to either of us, so we walked quickly up to the top floor for the city views. Views were nice, but they basically showed a large city, not much of interest to me. After coming back down, we sat by the castle, saw a guy with a live owl walk up and take its picture with the castle in the background. As we walked through the square, we saw a couple with a dachshund in a kimono, on a wooden stand, taking its picture with the castle in the background. Then they packed up their stuff into a stroller and took off. Crazy! We walked to the nearby gardens, but there wasn't much to see, so we skipped going in. Back to the subway entrance, where I tried to find a nearby restaurant, without success. Couldn't get data to judge distance and availability of vegetarian options. We headed back to the Airbnb, but Ann was coughing and it was that wet coughing sound. I got concerned about sitting across from her over lunch, so we walked to the near store and got food for lunch and dinner. It was a very quiet rest of the day and evening. I finished watching the movie Tenet and finished The Sympathizer as well.

03-08-2025 Run/Walks

Travel day. I got up early, intending to go for a 3+ mile run. Headed over to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and started running north along the east shore of the river. Nobody out except some runners. I ran up to about the 1.5 mile mark, then ran across a bridge to the other side of the river, headed south along the west bank. But the river split without me noticing it, so I kept going further west, now along the western bank of another river. I kept going for a while, eventually crossing back over a bridge and realizing I was further south than I had started. I figured out how to get back to the Peace Park by the museum and ran there first, then headed to the Atomic Bomb Dome before finding my initial route and backtracking to the Airbnb. Ended up running a couple of extra miles, but my overall pace was about what I wanted it to be, pretty relaxed. Am becoming more comfortable with running up to at least 5 miles.

Avg pace = 8:29/mi
Total distance = 5.15 mi
Elapsed running time = 43:42
Avg heartrate = 126 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 12

Got back and had to hustle to eat breakfast, grab a shower, pack up and clean up before we left a little after 8:00. We walked to an underground tram stop and took it to a JR train station, just missed our tight connection when I put in the wrong card at the entrance gate. No big worry, another train came in about 15 minutes, and this one took us to a ferry landing to go to Miyajima, a touristy island with lots of shops, a famous shrine, and a temple. There were also some other attractions. We dropped our luggage in a locker at the train station. The ferry ride over was nice, but I was put off by the heavy tourist focus along the streets. There were also deer wandering around begging for food, initially fun but not for very long. Thankfully, they didn't bother me her us. We walked up to this pretty cool large torii gate out in the water (Ann got a small expensive coffee at a hotel). Tried to see the pagoda, but it was covered for restoration. I wasn't interested in going through the Hokokujinja Shinto Shrine, thankfully Ann wasn't either. We kept walking through the shopping area, eventually got to the Buddhist Daigan-ji Temple. I was hesitant about climbing the steps and committing to walking through it, but Ann said we had time to kill, so we went up. There were some very cool statues of deities, many with red caps (one with a Mexican sombrero). We kept walking up and eventually came upon a group of Buddhist monks performing the Hocho Shiki ceremony, a ritualistic preparation of a fish to be served to the kami, or Buddhist spirits. Was completely unplanned and fascinating in the roles and movements of the participants, particularly the guy who ritually cut up the fish without once touching it with his hands (he used long chopsticks and a sharp knife). This little event made the entire ferry trip worthwhile for me. We walked around the theme grounds a little more after that before heading back down. On the way back, we also found a way to get onto the beach, which allowed us to get closer to the large torii gate and take some pics. Apparently, this gate and its associated shrine can look like they are floating on the water when the tide is particularly high. We weren't close to that point, which is what allowed us to walk out on the sand. Then it was a leisurely walk back to the ferry landing and then back to the train station, with plenty of time before the train arrived to take us to Hiroshima Station. All went smoothly, and we had enough time to get a bite to eat before boarding the Shinkansen back to Shin Osaka Station. Train ride went smoothly, and we arrived in Osaka around rush hour, which made for some crowded subway rides to get to the neighborhood where our AirBnB was. We made it without issue, and the walk from the subway station to the place was a mercifully short one, although we had some trouble interpreting the directions about how to locate the flat itself. When we did find it, there was additional difficulty in figuring out how to open the lockbox where the key was, but we figured it out as well. Ann wasn't hungry but was tired from the long day, so I headed out to find some food for dinner and breakfast for the following day. It was drizzling and cold, but there were two stores nearby. In the first one, I had a difficult time finding anything that was vegetarian and relatively easy to prepare, quite frustrating. And they didn't have any baked goods. So I ended up going to the second store, right next door, and getting some stuff. Back to the AirBnB, where I made up some more stir fry and had that for dinner before settling down to go to sleep.

03-07-2025 Walks

Had a series of vivid dreams but slept pretty well. Ann was snoring heavily in the night, but I nudged her and that seemed to stop it. We got up in plenty of time to finish packing and cleaning before walking to the subway station. Subway to the Nara Line, where we used our passes to get to Kyoto Station. Once there, we boarded a train (no need to leave and re-enter the gates) for Shin Osaka Station, and that trip went smoothly. Once at the station, we showed our tickets to a JR agent and had time to get a coffee before boarding a Shinkansen train to Hiroshima (max speed = 170 mph). That also went smoothly. Took about an hour and a half to get to Hiroshima Station. Once there, we needed the help of a JR agent to get through the gate, not great. Then Ann got the tickets for tomorrow's train to Osaka in the afternoon. We followed directions to the Airbnb, not too long a walk after getting off the streetcar (used our Suica cards), and after Ann found the instructions we were able to get into unit. It's nice, has a small living room and a bedroom loft. Dropped our stuff off and headed to a purported Tex-Mex restaurant for lunch. Longer walk there, food was acceptable, not great, but the decor and vibe were quite nice. This place apparently is a hub for music, including blues, and a number of recognizable names of musicians were written on the walls. After lunch, we walked over to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, where we split up. I went into the museum, and Ann walked a little in the park before heading back. The museum exhibits were grim, as expected. It was crowded but well laid out. Video recollections of survivors were especially compelling, as were the pictures of devastation to both people and buildings. I saw most everything there, then walked around the park grounds as well, looking at the Victims Memorial Cenotaph, Eternal Flame of Peace, Children's Peace Monument, and Atomic Bomb Dome. The last one was an especially grim reminder of the physical damage done by the bomb blast. That was enough for me for the day, so I walked the short distance back to our Airbnb, where Ann was just returning from a visit to Shukkein Garden. We dropped our stuff off and went to a market that was very close by for some dinner and breakfast stuff. It was a quiet evening, Ann slept in a separate bed to try and keep me from catching what she has.

A note on health. After my nap yesterday, I felt a little off, was worried that I might be coming down with Ann's cold. But it didn't get worse. I've had a little bit of sniffles and occasional sneezing but no cough or congestion. Fingers crossed.

03-06-2025 Run/Walks

Woke up to no rain. Whoohoo! I went out for a shorter run, heading north on the river path for 2 miles before running up to a bridge, crossing the river, and running back on the other side. At one point, I missed seeing a puddle and got one of my shoes wet, then not too long after my phone fell out of its holder. Luckily, no damage, but I need to pay more attention to putting it in and on properly. As I got close to our Airbnb, I used an alley to exit the path, then ran on side streets back to the starting point. An intentionally lower effort on this run, both shorter and a little slower. Legs felt fine, last mile was the fastest, around 7:45.

Avg pace =8:01/mi
Total distance = 4.43 mi
Elapsed running time = 35:33
Avg heartrate =133 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort =23

After I got back, I had some breakfast and a shower, then Ann and I took the subway to Kyoto Station to redeem the voucher for the 5-day rail passes and to get our tickets to go to Hiroshima tomorrow. It took us a while, a question to a JR rep about directions (they weren't very good), and some additional looking to find the ticket machine, then another very helpful rep guided us through the process of getting our rail passes, which wasn't trivial. Next, we figured out when to travel to Hiroshima, and another rep took us through the process for getting those tickets. That definitely was not trivial, nor is the process for using the tickets. Should be an adventure for obtaining future tickets (we're doing a lot of train trips coming up). I'm hoping tomorrow's trip goes smoothly. We took a JR train to Inari Station and got off to go to the Inari Shrine. It was cloudy, with alternating periods of sprinkles and sunshine. The shrine was quite crowded, then we entered a path flanked by many, many, many(!) gates and a steadily uphill path to the top of Mt Inari. Was super crowded at the bottom, but it thinned out quite a bit as we ascended. There were so many shrines on the way up through the Torii gates, and at many of the larger ones there was some kind of shop selling trinkets, food, and drinks. It was off putting to me, left a sour taste in my mouth. The wooded scenery was nice but not spectacular. As we climbed, Ann slowed down, at times to a very slow walking pace. Was very frustrating to me. There was a nice vista of the city at one point, but otherwise it was repetitive. When we got to the final, steeper climb to the top, I surged ahead. The shrine at the top was anticlimactic for me, not very elaborate given the implicit buildup of expectations along the way. I waited for Ann to get there and look at it before we headed back down the way we came up, again slow in our descent. I walked ahead at the steeper parts, just couldn't walk that slowly. We came to a point, just after the vista spot, where there was an alternate route down, not through the orange gates. We took that one to change the scenery. It still had a bunch of shrines but went through a more residential-looking area. At one point, we walked by a shrine where a group of cats lived, and it was mildly entertaining to see some of them walking about. Back down to the bottom, I was tired, thirsty, and hungry. To get away from the obvious tourist traps, we took the subway back to our Airbnb, had a short break (I ate a sandwich and had something to drink), then walked to a slightly less obvious tourist trap restaurant, Cafe Vegan Terrace, for a late lunch. Food was pretty good, vegan food appears to e a little more upscale and priced here, probably because it's not so common. I wasn't feeling very talkative; the Inari Shrine visit was a general disappointment for me, and my feet were sore from all the walking and climbing. We walked back to the Airbnb a different way, got sidetracked a couple of times but never lost. The rest of the day was quiet. I had a longish nap after returning, then watched the end of a forgettable Netflix movie, made stir fry for dinner that was actually not bad, given our limited selection of seasonings (oil, soy sauce, salt). We did a preliminary clean of the place and packed up most of our stuff, and that was the evening.

03-05-2025 Run/Walks

Woke up, decent night's sleep, and got ready for a longer run. The rain appeared to have let up. I walked to the path by the river and initially ran north this time. It wasn't that cold, had a sweatshirt, rain jacket, and shorts and was fine. Ran a relatively fast first mile for a change and tried to maintain this pace. The path was wet, with periodic puddles to avoid, and I was very aware of traction, as my shoes would occasionally slip. Under a bridge, there was a little girl practicing the French horn, I guess she was there to get away from family and neighbors. Still, she looked out of place. Ran out a little over 2 miles and ran out of paved path, so I turned around and headed back the same way, then going past the starting point and running another mile plus south on the path. I was solid for the first 4 miles, fourth was my fastest, then my legs started feeling heavier. Last 2+ miles were slower but my pace didn't fall off the table like last time. I overran the entry point to the path and went up to the second bridge, where there were stairs up to the street. I ran from there back south to the next street to get 9ver 10k, then walked the rest of the way back to the Airbnb. Set a new PR for 10k, my fastest as an adult, I'm guessing, since I'm relatively new to this distance. Legs felt tired at the end but no joint pain or aching muscles. And I avoided most of the rain, just some occasional light sprinkles.

Avg pace = 7:54/mi
Total distance = 6.29 mi
Elapsed running time = 49:43
Avg heartrate = 149 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 70

Had some breakfast and coffee when I got back, the took a shower and walked with Ann over to Corner Bakery, not super far from the grocery stores we've gone to. I took my umbrella, was glad of it when the rain picked up on the way over. We had hot drinks and croissants there, then walked back in cloudy but not rainy weather, stopping at the store to get stuff for tempura and breakfast. Then it was back to the Airbnb. We headed up to the Kiyomizu-dera Temple, starting around 2:00. It was a crowded tourist shopping street on the way up to get there. Lots of orange structures on the temple grounds, including a pagoda. We paid an entrance fee and walked further into the compound, including in the Hondo, or main hall. Then we walked on a path up to the Seikanji Temple, passing by a nice vista of Kyoto city and a stand of giant bamboo. There is a stone on those temple grounds, the Kaname-ishi (Stone of God, or Keystone) that is said to grant your wish when you visit it. From there we walked back down the hill, stopping at another pagoda along the way. The streets were even more crowded on the way down. Was a nice little outing, lots to see on these grounds. And we didn't get rained on. We made tempura vegetables for dinner, using ingredients we had bought earlier at the store.

Several additional comments. I finished The Beginning Place. Not the best story. LeGuin writes well in her passages, but this book left a lot to be desired in coherence and believability. I decided to give this series of novels a pause and start The Sympathizer, by Viet Thanh Nguyen. This book is much better written, with a wry, dark sense of humor. It takes place in the mid-70s, with the fall of South Vietnam and subsequent refugee life as it's backdrop. The voice in the novel is a double agent, nominally working for the CIA but reporting back to the North Vietnamese government. The story flows well and moves pretty quickly. Also, it's been a number of days since I felt any discomfort in my lower right back. Hoping that pain has gone away for good.

03-04-2025 Walks

Woke up with more not-so-great news. Ann was congested in the night and is coming down with something, probably a cold. She's being a trooper about it, but it's going to dampen the fun. It was really raining in the morning, and cold, so there was no way I was going to run in those conditions. We waited out the rain, then walked a fair distance over to the Kaleidoscope Museum of Kyoto. It was still raining, so we stopped at a 100 Yen store, and I bought an umbrella for about $5. Kept me much drier, and we also walked through the covered markets. It was pretty cold, and I could have used another layer on top. The museum itself was interesting and fairly quick to get through, my kind and I think Ann's as well. There were some really beautiful designs, but it got repetitive after a while. We sampled all the ones on display, then started heading back. It was getting to be lunch time, so I found a small vegan place, Veginny, down in a basement location. They had the Closed sign up when we got there, but the server came out and welcomed us in. Food was a delight, I had falafel that was first-rate in a bowl with lots of other veggies. The server was very personable, originally from New York, where he had met the owner and cook. It was a serendipitous find, maybe the best meal I've eaten on this trip. From there, we walked back in misty conditions to the Airbnb and warmed up (at least for me). Later in the afternoon, we walked by the Zenkyo-an Temple to get to the grounds of the Kenninji Temple, where we paid for admission, took off our shoes, and walked through the lecture hall, where was displayed the folding screen of Fujin and Raijin, the Wind and Thunder Gods, by Tawaraya Sotatsu. It was impressive, but I'm not sure if it was the original or a reproduction. Canon had sponsored a video nearby, so I'm suspicious. There were other artistic wall screens throughout the area, a number of them reproductions. The ceiling painting of the Twin Dragons in the temple itself was also cool, done recently. The golden Buddha in the temple was also pretty to look at but kinda far away. Walked back from there, successfully avoiding more rain. I made eggs and toast for dinner, then we walked over (pretty far) to a bar that advertised table magic. Unfortunately, the magician bartender, who is also, interestingly, a former jockey, was not there. We had a drink and walked back, stopping at another bar that featured magic. It, however, was packed, so we couldn't get in. Back to the flat after that, a little disappointed. It was a quiet rest of the evening from then.

03/03/2025 Run/Walks

Woke up after a good night's sleep (<>). We ate breakfast, then I got ready to go out for a run. It was raining but not cold, so I wore my rain jacket and shorts. I walked over to the river trail and started running south along the river trail. I had to run carefully to avoid slipping and the puddles. Ran south for 2 miles before turning around and heading back the same way. I overshot my entry point and ended up running to the next set of stairs to get up to the sidewalk by the road. On that way back, there were unavoidable puddles, and my shoes and socks all of a sudden got really wet. Up until then, I was fairly comfortable, just a wet head to content with. Finished strong, my last mile was the fastest one, and my legs didn't feel tired at all at the end or during the day. My heartrate monitor worked this time.

Avg pace = 8:10/mi
Total distance = 4.36 mi
Elapsed running time = 35:39
Avg heartrate = 139 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 24

Had a hot shower after I got back, which felt really nice. Then Ann and I walked over to a coffee shop, COYOTE the roots, serving El Salvadorian coffee, which was excellent. We talked to the owner of the shop, who has two more places, including a roastery. He was in El Salvador learning how to improve coffee bean quality, then COVID hit and he had to return to Japan. He had a contract to brings in beans from El Salvador, so he scrambled to find a shop and set it up, had been going for 4 years total now. We talked about how Japan and the Japanese people reacted to the COVID pandemic, was a nice conversation (banana bread was very good too). On the way to this coffee shop, I read a text from Mark about Mom's decision to stop taking her meds and her increasing infirmity. It sounds like she is really giving up this time, which is very depressing. It was still lightly raining when we left the coffee shop, headed toward Nishiki Market. On the way, we stopped at a Daiso shop, and I bought readers and sunglasses for 100 yen each, along with a glasses case for another 300 yen. Such a deal! We walked along the shops on that main shopping street until the rain let up, then entered the Nishiki Market. Lots of food and some trinket shops. Ann had squid on a stick, and we each had a 100 yen sake. We walked to the end, then turned around and headed back to the pickled vegetable buffet, all you can eat for 45 minutes, with rice and pudding at the end. It was fun and an excellent choice for a relatively light but filling lunch. Back to the room to dry off (me) and chill out before heading back out in mid-afternoon for some sightseeing. On the way back, we picked up a couple of items to make pasta for dinner. We walked first to the Kenninji Temple grounds, which were larger than expected. Then we walked up the hill to see the Yasaka Pagoda and the Hokan-ji Temple. Continuing up the street past the pagoda, we saw more people in traditional Japanese dress, as this is a neighborhood where traditional Japanese living is much more common. This is the Yasaka Kamimachi neighborhood, lots of shops that are quite tourist-oriented. We turned and climbed further in this general area, on the Sennen-Zaka path, and it was crowded with tourists and some locals. At the top of the path, we turned around and headed back down and over by the Ryozen Kannon Temple, where there is a large statue of Kannon, a female Bodhisattva known for kindness towards living things. We walked a little further uphill and came to some kind of entrance, but it wasn't completely clear what we would be paying to enter, and I was getting tired. Decided to save it for another day and started heading back downhill. We saw the pagoda at Dai-un-in Temple and walked over to Yasaka Shrine, which is another fairly large grounds of religious activity. After this, I was done with sightseeing for the day, so we headed back to the room, had dinner and a quiet evening.

03/02/2025 Walks

Woke up after another decent night's sleep. I wanted to get most of my steps in, sine it was going to be a long travel day. Headed out, misplaced my earbuds but found them right away, then walked around the local neighborhood. I saw most of the onsen baths nearby on the walk, had to be careful at times of icy streets but it wasn't particularly cold. I got back and warmed up for a while, had a light breakfast and then went down to the onsen in the ryokan and sat for a bit. It was very relaxing. I showered afterwards, and the hot water from the bath was just right for rinsing off. We left the ryokan a little after 9:00, got a pastry, and we're lucky enough to catch an earlier bus to Yudanaka station. This was a good thing because a long line formed behind us. We got on okay but picked the wrong car initially, so we didn't get to sit together, just across the aisle. Into Nagano, where we didn't have much time to buy tickets and get on the train. Ann bought the wrong tickets at the station, so we had to eat that cost and pay for the tickets on the train. It was about 4 hours on that train, not a lot of pretty scenery. I spent some of the time cleaning up Whatsapp images, and we ate a little bit too. Got to Nagoya station and had only 9 minutes to make our next train. The Suica cards didn't work, but Ann was able to work it out with the ticket agent, who gave us paper tickets to use before the Suica cards. Voila! Thankfully, we didn't have far to walk to the platform where our Shinkansen train was just pulling in. We got on okay, but it was a tense 10 minutes. The train ride to Kyoto was fast, up to 175 mph, and we got to the local office for our Airbnb with only a minimum of direction challenges. Waited there about 20 minutes, then got a shuttle to the Airbnb, which is like an extended stay hotel room, quite modern. We relaxed after the long traveling day, then walked to a nearby Fresco small supermarket to get some food for dinner and snacks. Dinner was fine, evening was quiet.

03-01-2025 Hike/Walks

Slept pretty well, I wasn't cold but had to get up a couple of times to turn the space heater back on. We ate a light breakfast and then headed over to the bus stop to get up to Snow Monkey Park. It was in the high 20s, so I was bundled up pretty well, with tights and carrying dual gloves. Got the bus up to the drop-off point for hiking up to the park, then we started. We had budgeted plenty of time for the hike, which was a good thing. The roads and trails we walked on were icy and slippery, so Ann was walking slowly and carefully. Was a little frustrating for me, I had to hold her hand on the icy parts. But we got up to the park before it opened, so less people. There were a bunch of monkeys in the park, most of them searching the ground for food, which I understand is spread out for them as an incentive to come down and be around humans. In the hot spring pool that was created for them, usually there were a small number of monkeys, 2-5. I took a lot of pics and videos, some of them turned out decent, although this was one time when it would have been nice to have a good camera with real zoom. Walk back down was perhaps a little faster. We took the bus back down and then had a brief break before taking another bus into town and eating lunch at a place that served ramen and other dishes. Was good enough for us. We walked quickly from there to Yudanaka station and caught a couple of trains to get to Obuse station. We walked through a deserted part of town to get to the Hokutai Museum. He was an influential painter from the mid-1800s, but the museum didn't have a lot of his works. Instead, others who were influenced by him had their work displayed. It was an odd little museum, didn't take us long at all to go through it. He painted iconic paintings of waves and Mt Fuji. We stopped at a little craft store afterwards had some apple turnovers, cider, and beer, and talked to the storeowner, who lived a long time ago in the US. She was very chatty, and it was an enjoyable diversion before we had to walk back to the train station. Got there in plenty of time, train back had fewer stops. We got some food at Lawson and then walked into the village to find a place for a snack or drink. We ended up in a place called Yamabouiboui, where we got drinks and talked to the server, who owns the place along with her French husband (the chef). They've been open 5 months, so far so good. We had a nice chat with her about traveling, living internationally, and food. Then we walked to the bus stop and caught the bus back to near our ryokan. Short stop in the room, then we used the private onsen there. Water seemed really hot, but Ann cooled it off and we got used to it. Sat inthere6for a while before heading back to the room, eating a bland (for me) dinner, and relaxing before going to sleep. Was a long day, mainly decent with only the museum being a letdown (but two fine conversations with locals).
