12-07-2024 Ride

I had to bundle up for the ride on this cold morning, it was about 41F when I left home. It steadily warmed up as I climbed through the neighborhood and then took the extended route through the 4S Ranch neighborhood to get to the 4S Target. On this Bisikleta ride, which I had mapped out, there were: Perse, Ray, Arnold (back after recovering from his bike crash), Fritz, Rob, Zac, and Nel. So, no slow riders. We intended to ride at an easy pace, and that intention probably dropped our general pace a little bit but not a large amount. Down Camino del Sur to San Dieguito Rd, where the descent into Fairbanks Ranch was quite chilly. We had a decent pace line on the flats over to El Camino Real, which we used to get to Via de la Valle. Down to PCH from here, turning left there and riding up into Del Mar and over to Carmel Valley Rd. We turned there and took it to the 56 bike path, staying on it past Camino del Sur and to its end by Rancho Carmel Dr. We did have another pace line between Carmel Valley Rd and Camino del Sur that held together pretty well. We got onto Rancho Carmel Dr and took it up to Carmel Mountain Rd, then over to Camino del Norte. Arnold was feeling the effects of not having ridden, and Zac was also not super eager to add unnecessary miles, as he was recovering from illness and jet lag (South Korea and Taiwan trip with Joey). We rode to Camino San Bernardo and used it to get back to RB Rd. Originally, I was going to take them through the 4S Ranch neighborhood, but they looked tired, so we just took the straight shot back. Zac had lost his wallet just after we started the ride, so he and I rode on Camino del Sur and were lucky enough to find it. We circled back to the starting point, I hung around for just a while, then I rode home via Dove Canyon Rd, RB Rd, and W Bernardo Dr. Not a fast pace on this day for me, and my left upper leg muscle and right knee outer tendon were giving me a little grief, so I was glad to take it really easy on the ride home.

Avg speed = 16.5 mph. Total mileage = 45.7 mi

I got home, had a little bit to eat and a short break before heading over to Andy's house to help him with party setup. We moved chairs and set up tables that Perse brought over, and we set up a couple of shade covers in his back yard. Then I drove home and got ready to head over to church to attend Sandy Holmes' memorial service, which was quite moving. Faith gave a very good remembrance of her, and we had the chance to chat with a couple of people at the reception afterwards. Then it was home, stopping at Von's on the way to get more plastic forks. We changed when we got there, and next we packed up the egg nog, lentils, and other stuff to take to the party. The get-together was a nice one, there were some big laughs at the games that Jhonar had planned out, and the egg nog was a big hit. I talked to Leslie at some length about their trip next May to Scotland, after Charlie retires in March. Also talked with Eric about his job. The white elephant gift exchange was mildly amusing, not a lot of swapping. We got home fairly early, and I was glad to get some rest after a busy couple of days.
