12-31-2024 Ride

This was a generally slow day. Got up, had some oatmeal for breakfast, and eventually got ready for a bike ride. I took my Fuji bike, since I'm dealing with chain skipping issues on the other one. Ordered a new chain and some other items from Amazon, I hope that fixes the chain issue. I rode through the neighborhood, taking the Capilla Rd route for a change, then it was the long way through the 4S Ranch neighborhood. To Camino del Sur, taking it down to San Dieguito Rd and heading into Fairbanks Ranch. I made decent time on the flats over to El Camino Real and then to Via de la Valle. I stayed on this road until just past the freeway, then turned right onto Valley Ave, which I don't think I've ever ridden on before. It turns into Stevens Ave, which tees into Lomas Santa Fe Dr after a short, steepish climb. Then I rode down to PCH and turned right. Headed toward Encinitas, but I had to pee, so I couldn't generate much power. I stopped for a short break at Swami's Beach, had a pee and a banana, then started heading back. To Via de la Valle, and then a retrace of my outbound route until I got to Paseo del Sur. From there, I took the new standard route home. I didn't feel my strongest on this ride, which was comparatively flat. The ride up Three Witches was kinda slow. Legs weren't tired, just no real push in them.

Avg speed = 17.3 mph. Total mileage = 43.4 mi
Avg speed (calculated by my analysis program)  = 17.3 mph
Avg power = 154 W. Weighted avg power = 175 W
Total elevation gain = 2010'
Avg heartrate = 122 bpm (Coospo)

I got home a little before 1:00 and had some lunch. In the afternoon, Laura, Joe, and I (mostly Laura and I) talked about technology and its combination of both beneficial and deleterious effects on society. We included how AI and technology access is affecting knowledge transfer in teaching environments. I signed up for Claude AI and asked it a couple of questions related to this topic. It gives fairly good answers, with more nuance than I have seen with either ChatGPT or Gemini. Emily came over after work, and she and Laura went to Ross while Joe and I watched some of the Penn St-Boise St football game. Calzones for dinner and donuts for dessert. We watched some of the TV coverage of New Year's Eve festivities, and it was frankly terrible. Stayed up until 9:00 to see the ball drop in Times Square, and that was enough for me.
