10-31-2025 Run/Ride

Woke up after not a great night sleeping, in the office bedroom since Ann's arm was hurting from her COVID shot. She got up early, I got up after 6:00 and got ready for a run down around the park. I started out a little faster than the previous day and continued with negative splits for four miles. Legs felt okay during the run, still not really pushing the pace and focusing instead on form and building back some endurance.

Avg pace = 8:15/mi
Total distance = 4.21 mi
Elapsed moving time = 34:46
Avg heartrate = 126 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 11

Later, my right glute was a little sore but not painful. Got home, relaxed for a bit, then got ready for a bike ride, again at fairly easy pace and relatively flat. Headed down by the park and across the freeway via the pedestrian bridge. Then it was on BVP all the way to Valley Pkwy, taking a measured pace all the way but trying to stay in Zone 2 as much as possible. Over to El Norte Pkwy, taking it all the way down to Broadway. I'd thought about getting a donut or pastry on the ride, so I turned left and headed towards town. Eventually decided against stopping. Rode to Grand Ave and used it to get to Escondido Blvd. Left turn there and out of town that way, taking the route through Kit Carson Park to Del Lago, where I turned right and rode to the freeway. Home the normal way across the freeway, taking it slow up the last two climbs. Was a little faster than I expected, but it was a flat ride overall.

Avg speed = 16.4 mph. Total mileage = 21.0 mi
Avg power = 130 W. Weighted avg power = 148 W
Total elevation gain = 840'
Avg heartrate = 114 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 17
Training Load = 61
Intensity = 67%

Later in the morning I rode over to Genki Sushi, where I met folks from HP to wish Thanh well on her last day. Talked mostly with Thanh, Rima, Anna, and Dan. I feel badly for them, particularly the latter three. Lunch was decent, was nice to catch up with them. I headed home after that. In the afternoon, I worked on a Python program that will let me display multiple GPX files in an overlay. Made progress, should be able to get it running within a day or so. Later, I got a text from Avi inviting us to a Halloween Sushi party at his place. I was pretty sure Ann wouldn't want to go, but she surprised me by being open to the idea. I found our old Halloween costumes in the office closet, and we decided to go. Made some stir fry rice and vegetables, and I ran to the store to get wine and beer to take with us. The party was nice, not so many people I knew. But the food was good, and we chatted with a guy, Charlie, who was into horses (his daughter rides with Katya), and it was pleasant enough. We left on the early side, Ann was ready to go, and I wasn't too far away from her. Drove home, and I watched some TV before going to bed.

10-30-2025 Run/Swim/Ride

Had a decent night's sleep, got up really early and had some cereal and a banana, then went back to sleep. Woke up after 6:00 and got ready for an easy run down to the park, two loops, and almost all the way back to get to 5k. No discomfort from my right glute, and I was able to run negative splits for the three miles.

Avg pace = 8:36/mi
Total distance = 3.12 mi
Elapsed moving time = 26:51
Avg heartrate = 123 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 6

When I got home, I had just a little time before I needed to get ready for a swim at the WWC when it opened. Was a little concerned about my left shoulder, since I had some nerve twinges recently. I was the only swimmer in the pool for the 1450 yds I did. Here are the times for my 2 500s and the last 450: 9:25, 9:32, 8:10. Did the last 450 with the pull buoy, so that improved my time there.

Avg pace = 1:54/100 yds (Video, skipping pause before last 450)
Total distance = 1450 yds
Elapsed moving time = 27:36 (Video)
Avg heartrate = 148 bpm (Zepp, perhaps)
Relative Effort =  36 (perhaps)
SWOLF = 37
Avg stroke rate = 22
Avg pull distance = 2.31 yds

This was the best swim I've had in a while, although it took some time in the first 500 to get my breathing settled. Watched some TV when I got home for a while, then Ann and I drove to meet the Four Amigos and their spouses (no Kenda) for Chinese food at a dumpling house. It was good food, a lot of it, and fun conversation but different from the guys talking and joking. We headed home after that, and I had a little time to gather up the chain maintenance stuff to take over to Paula's house. Got a late start and, with annoying traffic, arrived right at 3:00. We cleaned her new chain after breaking off the extra links, then she put it in the wax and we went for a ride. Down San Elijo Rd, always a thrilling descent but especially with car traffic to watch out for. Right on Melrose Dr and over to Boulderidge Dr, taking this new road over to RSF Rd. Climbed up into San Marcos and turned right on Camino del Arroyo Dr and then left into Hermosita Dr. Left on San Marino Dr, which took us by the lake and turned into San Pablo Dr. This road wound through the neighborhood, around the country club, until we turned right on La Noche Dr. Up just past McMahr Dr, we turned right onto a bike/walking path and rode through a nice wooded area, at times having to dodge runners who were using the path as part of a race route. We got off the path onto Mendocino Dr, took it to Orchard Ave and thus to Santa Barbara Dr, where we turned right and started the climb back to her house. Another tight on Sunstone Dr took us, via a moderately steep road, to Twin Oaks Valley Rd, which has a steady, grinding climb from there for about a mile and a half up to a fire station. I waited for Paula there, then we descended to Double Peak Dr and climbed back to her house.

Avg speed = 13.1 nph. Total distance = 12.0 mi
Avg power = 125 W. Weighted avg power = 168 W
Total elevation gain = 1240'
Avg heartrate = 113 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 18
Training Load = 63
Intensity = 76%

Didn't stay long after the ride, had to get home. More afternoon rush hour to deal with, I'm so glad I don't have to fight this every day. Evening was quiet, watched some football and a show, then went to bed.

10-29-2025 Ride

Had a pretty good night's sleep, even though I'd had a fair amount of caffeine the previous day. Seemed like I was rushed in my preparation, even though there was enough time. Got out to the garage and saw that the rear tire on my Canyon was flat, so I switched some gear to my Fuji and rode it instead. I was late getting started and not feeling particularly strong. Took the normal way there, and at W Bernardo Dr I tweaked something in my neck on the left side. That bothered me periodically throughout the ride, not sure what I did. I was late getting to his house, and we didn't wait long before starting the ride. Up to the top of Angelique St, turning right there on Cypress Canyon Rd and riding down to Blue Cypress Dr, where we took a left and rode a climb up to Spring Canyon Rd. On this ride, for the most part, I rode behind John at his pace, since he was still recovering from the flu. Right on Spring Canyon Rd and then a left onto Sunset Ridge Dr. This took us to Scripps Lake Dr, where we took another right and rode by Lake Miramar before dropping down to Scripps Ranch Blvd. We took that down to Carroll Canyon Rd and then turned left onto Businesspark Ave. Left on Willow Creek Rd, which took us down to Pomerado Rd. We climbed back up to the top, it's not usual that we do this climb early in a ride. I rode at John's pace, and we then descended on Pomerado Rd, staying on it until turning right onto Ted Williams Pkwy to get up to Twin Peaks Rd. We took that to Community Rd, which was a nice run after turning right to get to Metate Ln. Another right turn on that road, taking it back to Pomerado Rd and turning left there. Then it was back to John's house via the Scripps-Poway Pkwy route. We had delicious smoothies that Vivian made and got caught up a little bit on what's going on in their lives. My ride back home was the normal route via W Bernardo Dr, and I was fairly slow. During the ride, I occasionally rode in aero position but not for the speed so much as for the change in posture. Legs felt fine at the end, I was hungry from not eating in the morning or during the ride.

Avg speed = 14.9 mph. Total mileage = 38.8 mi
Avg power = 125 W. Weighted avg power = 151 W
Total elevation gain = 2550'
Avg heartrate = 116 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 45
Training Load = 136
Intensity = 69%

I had just a little time to relax before getting ready for my volunteer shift at the hospital. Nothing unusual happened, was kinda slow with little periods of more activity. Finished on time and rode home to give Mom a call. She was in good spirits, and it was a pleasant call. Watched some TV in the evening, fixed the flat on my Canyon rear tire, and that was the day.

10-28-2025 Hike/Walk

Ann's fun day for her birthday (<!>). I'd originally planned on us going out to breakfast but decided to make breakfast instead. Good call. We ended up leaving around 9:00 and driving, through just a little morning commute traffic down to Torrey Pines SB for a walk by the beach. It was foggy the whole time we were walking, north toward Del Mar. Saw a lady guarding an injured Western Grebe until animal rescue could arrive. Was a quiet walk, hoped Ann found it soothing. Not my thing. We drove down to Old Town after that, parked and walked quickly through Heritage Park to see the Victorian houses. Mildly interesting, only two were open in some sense. Learned about Old Town (Thomas Whaley) vs. New Town (Alonzo Horton). Then we walked over to the Whaley House and bought tickets to go through. It was mildly interesting, supposed to be haunted because it was built on the grounds of a gallows. Heard some fun stories from one of the guides before the tour started. There was a cool little courthouse and a theater in the main house, along with an arch said to be on the spot where the gallows was. We walked from there to Flor's Farm to Table, which turned out to be smaller and not as good as its reviews had indicated. Still, it was nice to sit down and get something to eat. We walked through Old Town after lunch, through some shops and looking at the Dia de los Muertos displays, which were kinda cool. Then it was back to the car, ahead of schedule, as I feared would happen. Drove over to PB and stopped at a 7-Eleven to get our free monthly Slurpee and kill a little bit of time, then we drove to the UTC mall and walked around there, including stopping at Uniqlo to buy a top for Emily for Christmas. We people-watched and chatted for a while before walking along this circuitous route to Raised by Wolves, a new speakeasy with a turntable entrance to the "hidden" bar. The interior was suitably cool, perhaps a little dark, and the drinks were fancy and kinda fun. Ann liked it, it was fine with me as well. She wanted to delay driving home during rush hour, so we had dinner at Ramen Nagi, which was really good, the best ramen I've had in San Diego, Still ran into some traffic on the way home but got there in time for Ann to be able to get to bell choir practice on time. I watched the TV in the evening to unwind from the day. For next time, I think I need to add more active or interactive elements to the fun days for her to enjoy them more.

10-27-2025 Swim

Slept fairly well, although I did get up in the night and eat some cereal and read before getting back to sleep. Ann slept in late for her birthday, and I hung around in the morning until she went for a spa day with Kay. Then I got ready for a swim at the WWC, headed over there and couldn't find my card, so I had to ride back home and look for it before returning. Pool was busy when I got there but I found a lane to myself. Did four 500s, the last one using the pull buoy and my swim pads, which helps my speed and stroke count. Total swimming time of 38:55, here are the times for the four 500s: 9:37, 10:11 (had to adjust my goggles several times), 9:50, 9:17. I wasn't trying super hard in this workout, so I was pleasantly surprised with the time, particularly the first 500.

Avg pace = 1:57/100 yds (Video, including pauses)
Total distance = 2000 yds
Elapsed moving time = 38:55 (Video)
Avg heartrate = 168 bpm (Zepp, not to be believed)
Relative Effort =  117 (not to be believed)
SWOLF = 38
Avg stroke rate = 21
Avg pull distance = 2.39 yds

Had a relaxed middle part of the day while Ann was out. Watched some TV, read, had a nap. In the late afternoon I made a frittata for dinner, it turned out decently. I cleaned the kitchen as I cooked, which is so much better than piling up a lot of dirty dishes. Baked some cookies for dessert, this batch was more evenly baked. Went to bed early, not sure why I was so tired.

10-26-2025 Walk/Ride

Had a pretty good night's sleep and woke up around 5:30. Did the dishes and went out for an early-morning hour-long walk, in part to test how my right glute is healing up (so far, so good, no pain or discomfort). Then I got ready for a Halloween-themed bike ride with Paula, Catalin, Rob, and a couple of their friends Eric and Nicole. Rode over to the Albertsons parking lot early and got a coffee at the Starbucks. I saw Jason from the Phil's happy hour times, and we chatted a bit about cycling and biking. Then I met up with the others, Rob was late so we didn't start right at 8:30. We headed up Pomerado Rd to Twin Peaks Rd and turned left there. Rode up to Woodcreek Rd and turned right. A nice sterrt through a neighborhood, which dead-ended but had a sidewalk pass-through to Aubrey St. We took that over to Midland Rd and turned right to get to Poway Rd. A left turn there riding up to Garden Rd and thus to Sycamore Canyon Rd. It had been relatively flat to this point. I set a PR (3:34, 271 W) on this climb to the underpass, could have gone a little harder but not much. Eric came up next, and the others followed. We paused there just a bit, then rode up to Scripps-Poway Pkwy and headed west. A littlmore climbing, then a right on Danielson St, where Eric and I waited for the others. This is a nice, calm, descending road that we stayed on until turning left on Community Rd to get back to Scripps-Poway Pkwy. Down the hill to Pomerado Rd, turning left and climbing up to Stonebridge Pkwy. We turned here and took it up into the nice neighborhoods on either side. I won't detail the side streets we took, looking for Halloween decorations without much initial success. Eventually we ended up just below the water tower and climbed to the top, again trying to find decorated houses in the last little neighborhood (no luck). To the end of the cul-de-sac and back up, then we headed down, riding through a couple of neighborhoods on the way down. The last one had several houses with decent Halloween decorations. I talked a little bit with Nicole, who also swims and runs. Back to Stonebridge Pkwy and then the climbs to Pomerado Rd, where we turned left and rode to the top. We turned on Cypress Canyon Park Dr and stopped for a bathroom break at the park. Rob split at this point and rode back, while the rest of us continued on this road to Candy Rose Way, taking this nice downhill to Angelique St. From there it was the normal way down to Poway Rd via Springhurst Dr. I got out ahead of the others here and waited for them after the turn onto Pomerado Rd. We rode together to McFeron Rd, turning right and climbing, steeply for a bit, into a neighborhood I hadn't been in before. The others were tiring out, it was clear, but I was feeling fine. Rode to the top and then over to Ring Rd, then left on Celestial Rd. This turned into Arbolitos Dr, which took us to Silverset St and back down to Twin Peaks Rd. That was a nice little route that Paula found. From there, it was the normal way back to the meet-up spot. Catalin was fading, so I hung back with him to make sure all was okay until we finished the ride with the gradual descent from the hospital. I didn't stay long before riding home the normal way via Bernardo Center Dr.

Avg speed = 13.3 mph. Total mileage = 38.5 mi

Total elevation gain = 3270'
Avg heartrate = 112 BP (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 50
Training Load = 189
Intensity = 72%

Got home at the same time as Ann did, she stayed after church and participated in the work day there. Was glad I wasn't super late from her perspective, since the ride was over 3.5 hours long. Got home, had leftover sides from the BBQ place for lunch, then got to work getting ready for the Bisikleta DB meeting in the early evening. I mixed up the ingredients for the international bean dip and cleaned the kitchen a little bit. Saw that I still needed some grocery items, so I headed over to North County Produce and got pita, limes, butter, and half & half. Then I drove home and made chocolate chip cookies, overcooked the first batch a little bit. Watched a little TV to relax and baked the bean dip to heat it up. Andy showed up first, and Perse, Arnold, and Gideon eventually made it, no Ray, Jed, or Rob. We talked about the Christmas party and the DB dinner mostly. They liked the idea about the self-supported century ride with sag stops at selected riders' homes. Watched some TV after cleaning up from the meeting and then went to bed.

10-25-2025 Ride

Woke up in the night, almost wide awake, so I had some cereal and a banana before going back to bed and reading for a while. Woke up at 5:30, got up around 6:15 and got ready for a Bisikleta ride I was leading. Was a little cool but not cold, had my long-sleeve jersey on. Through the neighborhood and then the new extended route through the 4S Ranch neighborhood, including riding up to the top of Camino San Thomas. Ray, Perse, and James were already there when I got to the 4S Target parking lot, and I talked to them about their century adventure the previous weekend. On this day there were the following riders: Ray, Perse, Rob, Nel, Fritz, James, and Charlie. We headed out, initially at a moderate pace, down CdS to San Dieguito Rd, down the hill and across the flats to ECR. About halfway across the flats Perse got a flat but fixed it in about 5 minutes. We took ECR over to VdlV and then to PCH. I was in the lead a fair amount, but others were there as well, including James, Rob, and Fritz. Headed north on PCH, and this is where we stepped up the pace. Ray was riding strong, near the front of the pack, and Fritz was pushing the pace more than the others. Rode to the La Costa Ave, waited for everybody to catch up there, then we took this road back to ECR. Stopped for our break at the Starbucks on the corner there. Continued north on ECR for a bit before turning right onto Alga Rd, which had a little descent before a 500' climb that turned out to be the workout of the day. I had done this climb once before but set a PR (9:14, 249 W, 155 bpm) on this day. Fritz hung with me for much of the climb but couldn't sustain the power to keep up near the end. Waited for everybody to gather at the right turn onto Melrose Dr, which was downhill to Rancho Santa Fe Rd, where we turned left. Some more climbing, not as intense, to get into San Marcos, and Fritz and Ray were right with me on this climb. Down to San Marcos Blvd, where the others kept going while I waited for James to catch up. Once he did and made the turn with me, I pushed pretty hard to try and catch back up with the others. Took Discovery St over to Barham Dr, and I caught them just before we crossed Twin Oaks Valley Rd. Ray and I got out in front here, Fritz eventually caught up, and we rode over to Mission Ave. Took that road into Escondido, turning right on Centre City Pkwy. Just past this turn, Ray noticed that he had a screw embedded in his rear tire, so we stopped at a quick mart around 5th Ave. He was able to put a dynaplug in really quickly. It was the fastest tubeless flat repair I've ever seen. Around this time Rob and Perse had stopped to fix a problem with Rob's chain, and they ended up passing us while we were at the quick mart. We followed the standard route (the one that ends up on the back side of the mall) back, while James took the freeway and beat us back to the cars by a long time. Eventually met up with Rob and Perse by one of the gas stations near the golf driving range. Fritz and I took off after we gathered up and went under the freeway. At the place where the pavement meets the dirt, Rob took a minor spill (I didn't know about it and kept going). Ray and I were out in front after the climb up to the park, and I led the way up the second climb to Duenda Rd. Fritz almost caught me on the climb, coming from pretty far back. From there to the end it was Fritz and I in the front. We turned right on Poblado Rd and then left on Capilla Rd, hoping to see Gideon out in front of his house, but he didn't show. Normal fast way from there back to our starting point, and Fritz was really pushing the pace. My legs were okay but I was getting tired. Rob went straight home, while we saw James in the parking lot. He had had enough time to put his bike in the back seat. Ray showed up not too long after us, then the rest finished as a group. I stayed around just a bit before riding the new normal way home, kinda slowly.

Avg speed = 17.2 mph (17.4 mph). Total mileage = 58.3 mi

Was hungry, not starving, when I got home. I had some cheese and crackers, then made some chili ramen, which filled me up. Watched some NCAA football while I ate. Had a quiet afternoon, including a nap that felt pretty good (<>). In the evening, we went over to North City (a little "urban" enclave by CSUSM) and watched some music, after stopping at Walmart to pick up supplies for the Bisikleta DB meeting and getting some sides for dinner from Felix's BBQ). We took chairs and sat outside on what turned out to be a cool night, where I was getting chilled about halfway through the show. The acts were the Lonesome Roses, a nice-sounding female guitar duo who played folk-like singer-songwriter tunes, and Music by Eras, a musical performance group that has different shows of cover songs based on a specific musical genre. They were decent, a little campy and pre-packaged, but good for a free concert like this. They played for quite a while, but since they started early we were home by about 9:30, which was great.

10-24-2025 Swim

Had a restless night's sleep, too much caffeine in the afternoon I guess. I slept initially in the office bedroom, since Ann was making a lot of noise. Read some in the night and ended up waking up around 6:00. Got ready for a swim at the WWC with Avi. I drove over there because I needed to go to my DMV appointment in El Cajon right afterwards. Swam a total of 1500 yds in several intervals.

I had a quick shower there and then drove down to the DMV in El Cajon to renew my driver's license and get RealID. Went fairly smoothly, I had made an appointment and it was close to being on time. Drove to Home Depot in El Cajon after that and picked up the new toilet to install in the upstairs bedroom. It's heavy! Then I drove home, originally thinking I would stop at the grocery store on the way but ending up not doing so. Had some lunch when I got home, I was pretty hungry. In the afternoon, I installed the new toilet, carrying the pieces up one by one to reduce the overall carrying weight. I used a rubber toilet gasket instead of a wax one, will see how it works. All of the seals held first time it filled with water, which was a big plus. I watched some TV in the mid-afternoon and then fixed the outlet in the upstairs bedroom, which appeared to have a loose wire going into the back. That outlet may need to be changed out with a GFCI outlet, another project for a future time. The evening was quiet, and I was more tired than expected. Went to sleep around 8:00.

10-23-2025 Swim/Ride

Slept well, with several vivid dream cycles. Woke up around 6:00 and cleaned the kitchen (was quick). I found a bunch of hot pads and oven mitts behind the bottom drawer by the coffee maker, they were keeping the drawer from closing. Headed over to the WWC for a swim, intending to try out a variation on my swim stroke that I saw. It was just me and another swimmer in the pool, and she left about halfway through my workout. I swam a 500 trying this new style out, and it actually slowed me down, so no help there. Then I swam 5 100s on the 2:15, followed by a final 500 with swim pads and the pull buoy. My stroke length was pretty consistently longer in this last 500, and I was much faster. Need to continue focus on stroke length and power pushing through the water. Here are the times for the different drills:
Warmup 500 with new stroke style
    10:04
5 100s at 2:15 intervals
    1:45
    1:47
    1:46

    1:42
500 with swim pads and pull buoy
    8:50
Total distance of 1500 yds in 27:42 elapsed moving time.

Avg pace = 1:51/100 yds (Video, not including pauses)
Total distance = 1500 yds
Elapsed moving time = 27:42 (Video)
Avg heartrate = 138 bpm (Zepp, probably accurate)
Relative Effort =  63
SWOLF = 38
Avg stroke rate = 20
Avg pull distance = 2.50 yds (probably influenced by last 500)

Made some coffee when I got home, then I decided to do something I've been thinking about for some time. I went into the upstairs bathroom and took the toilet out, with the intention to replace it with one that is both more efficient and better at flushing. The removal went smoothly, but it was a minor pain to scrape off all of silicone caulk on the floor around the bottom of the toilet. Didn't have time to get to Home Depot, so I ate some lunch, and in the early afternoon Ann went to Mah-Jongg. So, I got ready for a bike ride on my Fuji, intending to do a flattish ride. Down by the park and over to Highland Valley Rd, taking it out to the base of the first climb before turning around. Back to Pomerado Rd, turning left there. Wasn't feeling particularly strong on the ride out to Poway Rd, where I turned around and headed back to RB Rd. Seemed a little better on the return, maybe some help from a tailwind at times. Home via the W Bernardo Dr route. Legs got a workout on this day.

Avg speed = 17.9 mph. Total mileage = 21.9 mi

Watched a little TV in the afternoon, then talked to Blair about his job, which ends next Friday. It was sad, Blair got the short end of the stick in this deal. His attitude was decent, I think he's still working through the options that he'll explore after the first of the year.

10-22-2025 Run/Ride

This turned out to be a busy, energetic day. I got up fairly early and rode down to the park in the dark for a run. Took it slow, paying attention to any discomfort in my right glute, which is still tender and bothering me, especially when I bend over. No pain during the run, and it generally felt fine afterwards. Each of the three laps around the park were succeedingly brighter and less foggy, it was kinda cool that way.

Avg pace = 8:39/mi
Total distance = 3.19 mi
Elapsed moving time = 27:37
Avg heartrate = 123
Relative Effort = 7

When I got home, I had a little bit to eat, including a chocolate cookie. Then I got ready for a bike ride, similar kind of pace to the previous day, not too hard and not too easy. I headed down by the park and over the freeway to BVP, taking it to Beethoven Dr and up that short, steep hill to the top, then turning right on Sierra Linda Dr, which has a nasty little loop with a downhill followed by a steep climb (15%) to get back up. I stayed on Sierra Linda Dr down to San Pasqual Rd, initially turning right (I misunderstood what road I was on) and then turning around to ride back down to BVP. Right turn there, then another right onto Mary Ln to take on another climb, this one ultimately longer, up to Summit Dr, where I took a right. There is this really great winding descent that I found down to Old San Pasqual Rd, where I turned left and had a more gradual climb to San Pasqual Valley Rd. Left turn there, taking it to the continuation of Summit Dr north of this road, where I turned and rode up to Skyline Dr. The map suggests that there is a way to connect to Cloverdale Rd through this neighborhood, but I think it's privately gated and impassable. Instead, I turned on Idaho Ave and rode down another nice short descent, this one straight, to Citrus Ave. Right turn, taking it to Glenridge Rd and turning right again, then left on Moody Dr by a memorial park followed by right on Reed Rd. Left on Oak Hill Dr and then right on Hayden Dr to get back to BVP. Out to Valley Pkwy, then over to El Norte Pkwy for some familiar roads. I took that road all the way back to Broadway, turning right there to get just a little more distance in and riding out to Village Rd, left there to Iris Ln and to Centre City Pkwy.  From here, it was the usual straight shot all the way back home, including riding back over the freeway. This ride had nearly all of the elevation gain packed into the first 12 miles, then it was mostly flat or downhill back to W Bernardo Dr.

Avg speed = 15.1 mph. Total mileage = 30.2 mi
Avg power = 124 W. Weighted avg power = 160 W
Total elevation gain = 1960'
Avg heartrate = 116 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 39
Training Load = 110
Intensity = 73%

I got home early enough to have a little break before I needed to get ready for my volunteer shift. I'd already shaved, so I took a shower and then headed over to the hospital. Nothing much to report. There was a new med tech, Sierra, with whom I'd never worked before. We didn't get much chance to chat this time. As usual, it got busy right near the end of my shift, so I left a little late. We talked to Laura when I got home, she updated us on the budget status at Sandia. She feels like she's in a decent position for now, but if the government shutdown goes past mid-December she may be furloughed for some time. Not great. She and Joe may have found a house to rent, in Berkeley, neighborhood sounds a little sketchy but they will check it out more before they make a decision (assuming they get the chance). Watched some TV and relaxed, gratefully, in rest of the evening.

10-21-2025 Ride

Felt the effects of a short nap and some caffeine from the previous day, woke up around 2:30 and had some cereal, then read for a while before getting back to sleep. Woke up around 5:30 (<!>), got up and got ready for a donut ride. Headed to the HP site the normal way, to Bernardo Center Dr, turning right and taking it and Carmel Valley Rd over to Black Mountain Rd. I wasn't slacking off on the climbs but also wasn't going all out. So, medium pace. I took Black Mountain Rd to Kearny Villa Rd and stayed on it until it turned into Ruffin Rd. Over to Clairemont Mesa Blvd, where I turned right and stopped at Sunny Donuts for a donut break. They were decent, nothing special but not bad. Then I rode west to Kearny Villa Rd, turning right and starting to head back. Rode back to Miramar Rd and took Pomerado Rd up the hill until turning left onto Avenida Magnifica for a change. The climb wasn't super steep, but it seemed like I climbed more than if I'd stayed on Pomerado Rd. Up to Scripps Trail, turning left onto Semillon Blvd to get over to Spring Canyon Rd. This eventually dropped back to Pomerado Rd, where I rode downhill and over to Metate Ln, turning right there to get some more mileage in. Up to Community Rd, turning left there and riding over to Twin Peaks Rd. Heading north, I think I had a little bit of a tailwind helping me along. Back to Pomerado Rd, taking it to RB Rd and turning left. I stayed on this road up to Matinal Rd, turning there and riding back home through the neighborhood. Legs felt fine, no soreness or obvious tiredness at the end. Weather was ideal for riding, overcast for the most part and nice temperature.

Avg speed = 15.9 mph. Total mileage = 39.8 mi
Avg power = 129 W. Weighted avg power = 161 W
Total elevation gain = 2300'
Avg heartrate = 121 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 57
Training Load = 148
Intensity = 73%

Had a light lunch when I got home, watched some TV as well.  In the afternoon I finally installed the second outdoor Tapo security camera, facing the front door and attached to a solar panel so I don't have to replace the batteries. Went fairly smoothly. Ann cut my hair as well, and in return I made chocolate cookies with chocolate icing. They also turned out well. I looked at the estimated mileage on the chain for my Fuji bike since it was waxed, and it's time to swap the chain out. About halfway to the mileage to change the chain on my Canyon, and this time I think I will install one of the new chains I bought.

10-20-2025 Swim

Had a good sleep, even after napping and going to bed fairly early. Got ready for a swim at the WWC and chatted briefly with Ben about Mom's medical alert system, then headed to the club in fall weather. The pool wasn't crowded when I began but filled up pretty quickly. I had a lane to myself and swam 2000 yds, with a very short break in the middle and another short one to put my swim pads on for the last 500. Tried extending my stroke by being more intentional in rotating my hips. It was successful but didn't get me much of a longer stroke (pull distance went from 2.22 to 2.28) or speed me up much. I could feel the workout in my shoulders afterward, which is a good sign of more effort expended. Here are the times for my four 500s: 9:46, 10:01, 9:59, 10:02.

Avg pace = 1:59/100 yds (Video, including pauses)
Total distance = 2000 yds
Elapsed moving time = 39:48 (Video)
Avg heartrate = 152 bpm (Zepp, not to be believed)
Relative Effort =  63 (not to be believed)
SWOLF = 39
Avg stroke rate = 21
Avg pull distance = 2.28 yds

Had some coffee and the last of the banana bread when I got home, was hungry. Placed an Amazon order for some miscellaneous stuff as well. Ann went off to have a birthday lunch with Johnny and Kay, so I had the house to myself in the afternoon. I loosened up the front fork on my Canyon, couldn't figure out how to completely take it apart (that may require removing and capping the hydraulic brake lines). It was enough to get in and clean some of the accumulated greasy dirt around the outside of the bearings, not perfect. Then I pushed it back together and did an initial tightening of the integrated stem to the head tube. Used a torque wrench to clamp the stem to the tube, then did a final minor tightening using the special Canyon tool. It seems to rotate a little smoother than before. Next, I tackled finding out why one of the outlets in the kitchen wasn't working. Took it out of the wall and saw two disconnected lines, which I plugged back into the outlet. But that didn't seem to work. I happened to have a spare GFCI outlet, so I took the old one out and swapped in the new one. Had a bit of a time attaching the ground wire to the outlet, and I gave myself a couple of little shocks when attaching the other wires, since the circuit was hot as I worked on it. I got it all to work, so the outlet is once again functional. That was it for tasks for the day. Spent the rest of the day and evening relaxing.

10-19-2025 Walk/Ride

Woke up a little early after a late night, went down and had some cereal for breakfast, cleaned the kitchen. Then I decided to go for an hour long walk around the neighborhood. Had some more to eat after I got home, went out while it was still cool and took down the shade covers over the garden beds (I ended up having a tiny lizard get in the hood of my jacket and reside there for a while until it startled me when I was in the kitchen). Ann had left for church, I made some smoothie and watched TV. Before that I talked to Ross to get a update on her reaction to the medical alert system. Seems she was more on board with it today, a good sign. I also started up a list of things to buy on Amazon. I logged on to LinkedIn and gave Avi Yagur a recommendation for his next position. Then I read for a while before deciding to go out for an easy-paced ride. Through the neighborhood and then through the 4S Ranch neighborhood to Ralphs Ranch Rd, then Paseo del Sur to Del Sur Ridge Rd back to PdS. Down to CdS, taking it to Carmel Valley Rd. Left turn and then up to Black Mountain Rd. I took this down to the 56 bike path and headed east to Rancho Penasquitos Blvd. Left turn and then a quick right onto Carmel Mountain Rd. Up that moderate climb and then down the hill and across the freeway. I rode to Camino del Norte and turned here to get on the time trial route, following that home. Was largely successful in keeping my effort level down, but it was still a workout, in part due to the moderate heat.

Avg speed = 14.2 mph. Total mileage = 23.6 mi
Avg power = 102 W. Weighted avg power = 139 W
Total elevation gain = 1560'
Avg heartrate = 102 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 20
Training Load = 69
Intensity = 62%

Read some more and had a short nap after I got back. The rest of the afternoon and evening were quiet, nothing major to report. I finally finished The Bee Sting. It was a sad book with an unresolved ending that left me wanting to know how all of the family members' lives were impacted. Started reading Samantha Harvey's Orbital, which won the Booker Prize for fiction.

10-18-2025 Ride

Had another good night's sleep (<>) and then rushed a little bit to get ready for the Bisikleta bike ride, which I was leading. Through the neighborhood and then straight to the 4S Target, where I was the first one there. Nel, Rob, and Charlie showed up, it was a small group since a number of others were up in Santa Barbara for a century. I'd planned the route, which took us up Paseo del Sur to Potomac Ridge Dr, turning left and riding to Nighthawk Ln. Took it over to Camino San Bernardo, then to 4S Ranch Pkwy, where we rode down to Dove Creek Rd. Over to Dove Canyon Rd and then down to Carmel Valley Rd. I led the others at a pace just less than tempo up the climb and over to Black Mountain Rd, where we turned. I think it was around here that I took my jacket off, was warming up enough. We stayed on Black Mountain Rd all the way to Kearney Villa Rd and up to Miramar Rd. Then it was up Pomerado Rd to the top and down to Scripps-Poway Pkwy, where we took a short bathroom break. Rode from there up the climb to Community Rd, taking a left there. I gapped the others on this climb, Nel was riding well and wasn't super far back. We rode down the hill and across Poway Rd, turning right on Hilleary Pl to get to Midland Rd, where we continued north. Had to take a small detour around the farmer's market, then to Twin Peaks Rd, turning right there. Up to Espola Rd, stopping for coffee at The King's Craft, although only Rob and I had coffee. After this break, I was buzzing a little bit from the coffee. We took Espola Rd up and by the high school, then turned onto Summer Sage Rd, riding over to Lake Poway Rd. We turned left here and rode up to the top, doing the little loop there before riding back down and continuing on Summer Sage Rd to Bridlewood Rd to get back to Espola Rd. Down to Valle Verde Rd, turning right and riding up the little climb before descending to Old Winery Rd. Left turn there, riding to the sidewalk connecting us to Paseo del Verano. There was a lot of traffic around the winery due to a craft fair. We rode north and over to Pomerado Rd, turning left there and riding up to Greens Rd. We took surface streets by the RB Inn and over Bernardo Oaks Dr to RB Rd. I was still feeling strong, and the others were starting to slow down. I set a PR on the climb from Bernardo Center Dr to the top (5:43), benefiting from green lights. Waited for the others to catch up, then we took the new extended route through the 4S Ranch neighborhood. Back to the starting point, where we had a short break before Rob and I rode back the old normal way to Matinal Rd. He turned there, while I continued down the hill to W Bernardo Dr. I was close to 50 miles, so I took it all the way to the park and to the cul-de-sac before turning around and riding home from there. Legs were solid throughout, my right glute was tender at the start but loosened up on the ride and was better at the end. For some reason my heartrate monitor didn't track on this ride, although it initially turned on.

Avg speed = 15.2 mph. Total mileage = 50.3 mi
Avg power =128 W. Weighted avg power = 167 W
Total elevation gain = 3540'
Training Load = 215
Intensity = 76%

Was a good day on the bike, not exhausted at the end but satisfied with my effort level. Had some lunch and watched NCAA football when I got home, relaxing through the afternoon. In the evening we went down to see John McCutcheon perform at the Good Samaritan Episcopal Church in UTC. We were a little further back in the pews than I would have liked, but the sound was quite good. He was a good storyteller and singer/songwriter, occasionally slipped with his playing or singing, but it was an enjoyable evening. Drove home and went to bed.

10-17-2025 Swim/Run

Had another good night's sleep after a busy day. Woke up and had about an hour before I headed over to the WWC for a swim. It was chilly again on the ride over. Talked with some of the guys before the gates opened, I was the only swimmer at the start. Ended up swimming 1550 yds, lost track of laps a couple of times. My first 500 was decent, not great, but later on my stroke count increased as I got tired. Still lots of training to build my endurance back up. I swam with four strokes/breath, which is more natural for me, although it is tough getting into the groove at the start.

Avg pace = 1:58/100 yds (Video, including pauses)
Total distance = 1550 yds
Elapsed moving time = 30:22 (Video)
Avg heartrate = 162 bpm (Zepp, not to be believed)
Relative Effort =  132 (not to be believed)
SWOLF = 39
Avg stroke rate = 22
Avg pull distance = 2.22 yds

After the swim I changed into running clothes and went for the 5k loop from the WWC. Had a faster first mile, then I slowed down on the second one and sped up on the third one. My right glute is still bothering me a little bit, will have to watch that.

Avg pace = 7:26/mi
Total distance = 3.15 mi
Elapsed moving time = 23:28
Avg heartrate = 144 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 23

Rode home in warmer weather after the run and had some cereal, then started watching the last episode of Season 3 of Foundation. Had a fairly easy day, nothing major done after morning exercises, did some reading before heading to a dermatologist appointment in the early afternoon. Nothing out of the ordinary found, watched some more TV and read some more when I got home. The rest of the day and evening was spent around the house. Finished Run by Blake Crouch.

10-16-2025 Swim/Ride

Slept really well, with some vivid dreams in the morning between when I initially woke up at 4:00 and when I woke up again after 6:30. Got up, had some banana bread, then got ready for a swim at the WWC. It was below 50 deg when I left, the first time this fall that I felt the cold on the ride over. Just a couple of swimmers at the start, several others joined. I swam 2000 yds with only a short break after the first 500, to adjust my goggles. Not fast, kinda depressing. I will need to put more distance in on my swimming during the winter months, I hope it will build my cardio stamina back up and make me, eventually, faster and more efficient. Here are the times for the 4 500s: 9:56, 9:57, 10:16, 10:11. Swam with 3 strokes/breath, still not fully comfortable or efficient at this frequency. My stroke count was high and got higher in the second half of the workout.

Avg pace = 2:02/100 yds (Video, not counting pauses)
Total distance = 2000 yds
Elapsed moving time = 40:41 (Video)
Avg heartrate = 171 bpm (Zepp, not to be believed)
Relative Effort =  132 (not to be believed)
SWOLF = 40
Avg stroke rate = N/A
Avg pull distance = 2.20 yds

I showered and changed at the WWC but had enough time after I was done to ride back home and make coffee to take with me to the HP site, where I met up with John, Gary, Brooke, and Dan. Talked about some site stuff, Brooke's current projects, and Indigo business difficulties. Latter was not a happy discussion. Rode home after that and ate a fairly light lunch. Had some chill time before getting ready for a bike ride from home with Paula. She showed up a little late from the site Diwali celebration, and we were riding by about 1:25. Simple route, over to Highland Valley Rd and up to the top at the 10-mile mark, then turning around and riding back the same way. I stopped at the top of the three climbing sections and waited but not super long. Paula is definitely improving. Wind was gusty, so the descent was a little more exciting than normal. We both made it down okay, but Paula was riding the brakes to limit her speed. We took it kinda slow on the last climbs back to the house.

Avg speed = 14.3 mph. Total mileage = 20.3 mi
Avg power = 136 W. Weighted avg power =172 W
Total elevation gain = 1950'
Avg heartrate = 123 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 38
Training Load =100
Intensity = 78%

Legs were fine throughout, not fully ready to go all out but good for this ride. I gave her some banana bread and a ginger snap when we got back, she really liked the former. Then I showered again and got ready to head to University Heights for dinner and a concert. We ate at Blue Nile, a small Ethiopian restaurant behind a little grocery. Service was a tad slow because it was made to order. Food was very good, spicy enough to make my lips tingle. Then we walked to Lou Lou's to see Haley Reinhart, who finished third in the 2011 season of American Idol. Talked to two guys before the show, one of whom worked at the hotel. They were fun to chat with and made waiting for the show go by quickly. Show itself was okay, not my kind of music. She has a tremendous voice, probably too much for the room she was singing in. Couldn't make out the lyrics very well, and she was also hidden (for me) in the bright back lighting. Ann really enjoyed it, so primary mission accomplished. She drove home which was great because I was pretty tired. To bed shortly after we got back home.

10-15-2025 Ride/Walk

Slept pretty well well after a somewhat busy day (<>). Got ready for a solo bike ride, since John wasn't available. Headed through the neighborhood, staying on Matinal Circle until the end and then going up W Bernardo Dr and RB Rd. Extended route the 4S Ranch neighborhood to CdS. Standard route from here to the coast using San Dieguito Rd and VdlV. I was trying to ride at a more relaxed speed, not always successfully. Got down to PCH and turned right, rode into Del Mar and took the route by the park for a change. It was misty and after I stopped to take a picture of the ocean it started to rain. Wasn't heavy but I started getting wet, and the roads were wet and dirty. Through del Mar, stopped at the restrooms at the State Beach parking lot, then took the old way to the 56 bike path, avoiding the underpass that can flood. Was measured in my pace back to Carmel Valley Rd, where I turned left and headed back to CdS. It continued to sprinkle occasionally, and roads were wet. Back to Paseo del Sur, turning here and riding through the neighborhood to CdS again. Home via the RB Rd and W Bernardo Dr route. Was starting to get hungry at the end of the ride, since I didn't bring anything with me. Legs held up, was just more tired at the end than usual.

Avg speed = 16.6 mph. Total mileage = 40.3 mi
Avg power = 133 W. Weighted avg power = 159 W
Total elevation gain = 2120'
Avg heartrate = 113 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 35
Training Load = 132
Intensity = 72%

Got home and change out of wet clothes, I wasn't soaking wet but it was uncomfortable. Cut up the vegetables for grilling and put them in the marinade, then had a shower and got ready for my volunteer shift at the hospital. Fortunately it wasn't raining on the way over. Nothing out of the ordinary at the hospital, I was regularly busy but never swamped. Ended up staying a little late to clean a room. Emily was there when I got home, we chatted when Ann did the grilling (thankfully, I was pretty tired). We had a nice chat, mostly about how things are going with them, at church, and at work. Went for a short walk after dinner, then more talking. I was less involved in the chat then, was ready to call it a day and relax for a bit. Ended up watching some TV after she left before turning in.

10-14-2025 Swim

Had a pretty good sleep, did wake up and read in the middle of the night, but I slept well in the early morning. Got up, cleaned the kitchen and took out the trash before heading over to the WWC for a swim with Avi. Before the gates opened, I talked a little with Ken, along with Jason Waldie, who also did the MB Sprint Tri this past weekend. This was a light workout day for me, focusing on getting some distance in and trying (not entirely successfully) to keep my stroke count low. We started off with a warm-up 250, then did the pyramid drill, trying to stay on the 1:00/50 yd times but slipping the time once for me. Then we finished up with a cool-down 250, using a pull buoy. Total swimming time, from video, was 32:47 for 1750 yds.
Warm-up 250
    4:45
Pyramid Drill
    50    0:48
    100  1:48
    150  2:50
    200  3:52
    250  4:48
    200  3:52
    150  2:54
    100  1:46
    50    0:50
Cool-down 250 (with pull buoy)
    4:34

Avg pace = 1:52/100 yds (Video, not counting pauses)
Total distance = 1750 yds
Elapsed moving time = 32:47 (Video)
Avg heartrate = 172 bpm (Zepp, not to be believed)
Relative Effort =  117 (not to be believed)
SWOLF = 39
Avg stroke rate = 21 bpm
Avg pull distance = 2.30 yds

It was good to get some distance swimming in, this is my plan to work on for the next couple of months, building out to being able to do 3000 yds in under an hour. Had some coffee and poppy seed bread for breakfast when I got home (I'd eaten a banana before leaving for the WWC), then I tackled some yard work tasks: mower repair, mow the grass and take out some weeds, winterize mower, clean and organize sprinkler supplies. I also cleaned out the area along the east side of the garage, it looks a little better. Watched some TV in the afternoon and did some computer work. We went out to dinner at Burma Place because I didn't want to have another night of doing lots of dishes. Instead, after dinner I baked a loaf of banana bread, wet-mopped the downstairs except for the dining and living rooms, and cleaned the kitchen in preparation for Emily coming for dinner on Wednesday. That took up most of the evening.

10-13-2025 Ride

Woke up hungry in the middle of the night and ate a bowl of cereal, then read for a whole before getting back to sleep (<!>). Started updating my 2025 Event Log, then got ready for a ride with Joe. I rode my Canyon for the first time in a while, over to the Via Rancho Park & Ride, met him there, then we took Beethoven Dr to BVP and headed north. All the way to Glenridge Rd, turning right and taking it up to Citrus Ave. We turned left and rode back to BVP, took it to Valley Pkwy and turned right to get to El Norte Pkwy. It was overcast for nearly all this ride, and there were times I thought we might get sprinkled on. We rode to Borden Rd and turned right onto Rose Ranch Rd, which has a short, steep climb before a nice descent. Onto Mulberry Dr, taking it to Olive St and turning left to get to Twin Oaks Valley Rd, where we turned right. I was riding pretty slowly for the most part, legs noticeably sore from the previous day. We rode out to TERI, stopped there for coffee and a long conversation, much of it about our Europe trip and some about Lindsey's new job as director of admissions at a private school near their home. Rode back on Twin Oaks Valley Rd at decent pace to Barham Dr, taking it to Mission Rd and into Escondido. Washington Ave to Hale Ave to Tulip St to get back to Valley Pkwy, turning left and riding to Quince St, where we made a right turn. Over to Ninth Ave, turning right again and then left on Redwood St to get over to Felicita Ave. Right turn, following it to Via Rancho Pkwy and back to the Park & Ride. Home the normal way across the freeway for me, on tired legs and into a headwind, so it wasn't fun. This ended up being about seven miles longer than I had originally intended, I was glad to be done.

Avg speed = 15.2 mph. Total mileage = 37.7 mi
Avg power = 118 W. Weighted avg power = 136 W
Total elevation gain = 1630'
Avg heartrate = 102 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 24
Training Load = 109
Intensity = 62

When I got home I had some lunch and watched a little TV, including an episode of Foundation. I dozed briefly during that episode but was successful in avoiding a nap. In the afternoon I changed the oil in the scooter, then I finished updating the Event Log. That takes a lot longer than you would think.

2025 Mission Bay Sprint Triathlon

As expected, it was a night of fitful sleeping, although I did get some sleep. Woke up in the middle of the night and had some cereal for fuel. My alarm woke me at 4:10 from a sound sleep, and it took me a couple of minutes to get rolling. Most of my stuff was already in my backpack, so I packed up an extra set of clothes, loaded the backpacks into the RAV4, and headed down to Mission Bay, leaving around 4:35. I got to the parking lot that James had pinned a little before 5:10, started getting my transport backpack filled with gear. James showed up about 30 minutes later, gave me a belt to use for my race number. It was still very dark when we headed over, and I couldn't see the sidewalk well at all. I missed a turn but finally made my way over to the transition area by Ventura Cove, where I started laying out my gear after having somebody read the small text that told me what wave I was in. James lent me some body lube, which I think ended up helping a lot when I took my wetsuit off. I was all ready, with about 20 minutes until the transition area was to be closed, when I noticed that I didn't have my cycling shoes. Had left them in the car, and that was a frantic 10 minutes to jog to the car (with my backpack), get my shoes, then jog back. I guess I was rushed when James started riding over from the parking lot in the first place, he is much more organized with these race starts. Anyway, I set everything out on a towel by my bike, including my phone in its case in my helmet, which was somewhat risky. Got out of the transition area in time, then it was about and hour and 15 minutes before my wave started. I walked along the beach, eventually met up with James, and we chatted about his past races as well as some pointers for a beach start to the swim segment. My group left right at 8:00, and I had a decent first part of the swim, around the two buoys, breathing every two strokes. I meandered a little bit on the return to the beach, since there wasn't an obvious landmark for me to focus on and aim at. Still, I had a pretty fast swim, started my watch on the beach, so the data below may reflect some running down to the waterline as well as jogging in the water until it was deep enough to start swimming. Didn't have much problem bumping into folks in the water, which was a little surprising in a good way. The Xterra wetsuit is so much easier to swim in than the Body Glove suit I bought at the rummage sale. A volunteer helped correct my course as I was heading toward the beach.

Avg pace = 1:34/100 yds (Zepp)
Total distance = 601 yds
Elapsed moving time = 09:29 (Zepp)
Avg heartrate = 121 bpm (Zepp)
Relative Effort =  2
SWOLF = 78
Avg stroke rate = 31 bpm
Avg pull distance = 2.02 yds

Don't believe that Relative Effort number above. It was a workout for me, and I could feel the effects of my exertion as I headed to my bike. Got out of the water and fast-walked there while unzipping and pulling the top of my wetsuit down. Once I got there, I took my race monitor off and then peeled my wetsuit off my legs pretty smoothly, put socks on my somewhat sandy feet, gathered my helmet and phone up, and started jogging out of the transition area. I had clipped my shoes into my pedals, should definitely have thought this through more, including the tip about arranging your shoes so they are facing up. That slowed me down initially until I could get my feet into my shoes. Even still, I rode for a bit with one foot on top of one shoe and the other one in, then for a longer time with my feet in but the shoes not tightened down. I was finally able to get into aero position maybe a half-mile into the course, but there were a number of sharp turns to negotiate that slowed me down. The route took us over to Fiesta Island, where we did a loop before riding back. I don't think anybody passed me on the bike and stayed ahead. There were a couple of riders, a female and a guy, who passed me several times on the circuit around Fiesta Island, but I was able to catch and pass them each time. The guy did get off the island first, and he and I traded places depending on whether it was flat (he was faster) or climbing (I was faster). Got back to the end of this segment okay, I think I worked harder this time than the last time on the bike. No heartrate monitor, obviously.

Avg speed = 21.8 mph. Total mileage = 10.53 mi (not sure why this was shorter than expected)
Avg power = 197 W. Weighted avg power = 205 W
Total elevation gain = 170'
Training Load = 41
Intensity = 93%

I jogged back to my bike in the transition area, caught up with James just as he was getting ready to rack his bike. Had a decent second transition at first, changed into shoes and cap quickly. However, I started running out the wrong way until I realized that wasn't right, probably lost 20 seconds or so. Crap! And my legs were feeling the effects of the ride, so I didn't get off to a strong running start. Settled into a decent pace, not as fast as in June, just couldn't seem to push myself harder. I ended up passing a lot of folks and was only passed by one other runner, a kid who was going all out, very impressive. I didn't have a good feel for the distance either, using Strava and having it call out the mile or kilometer distances is a recommendation for next time. The first two miles seemed to take forever, while the last mile went quickly. I didn't know where the end of the race was supposed to be, so it came up on me fast, and I didn't have enough foreknowledge to plan my kick to last longer. Still, I was glad to come around a corner and see the finish line. Got my participation medal and ate a banana while walking over to the results tent to find out I had finished third in my age group, 32 seconds behind the leader. If I hadn't made that wrong turn at the start of the run, it would have been much closer.

Avg pace = 7:15/mi
Total distance = 3.03 mi
Elapsed moving time = 22:00
Avg heartrate = 142 bpm (Amazfit)
Relative Effort = 17

I waited by the finish line for James to come through, and he had a really good run, maybe his best 5k ever. We chatted for a bit and then walked over to the beer corral, where he bought some tickets and gave a couple to me. So we had a couple of beers and talked about this race and others that he has done. I eventually walked over to the awards area and got there to receive my bronze medal and stand on the podium with the other male and female 65-69 finishers. A young guy in the crowd was nice enough to take some pictures for me. Then I headed back to the beer corral, where James was in line again waiting for more beer. We chatted while he drank his last beers, then we walked back to the transition area, where ours were among the last bikes left. Felt kinda bad about that, won't want to do it next time. Overall, this was a good day. I was, overall, faster than in June, keeping in mind that the run there was longer and the bike segment had more elevation gain. As part of my training, I need to work on combining the last two segments, riding hard and then getting off and running hard. That's not going to be easy because there will be suffering involved. My body held up. No issues with my right glute. On the run, I had a mild stitch in my side toward the end, but it was more of a distraction than a detriment. I drove home from there, tired but satisfied with my effort, given my level of preparation. Got home and ate a light lunch while watching some TV and decompressing and sharing some of the details of the race with Ann. I made an appointment to go to CarMax and sell the Kia, the process took about an hour, not including travel time. It was fairly easy, not annoying or punctuated by long periods of waiting for no apparent reason. Glad to be done with that task, now we are back to a one-car household, which will necessitate more planning and some compromise on car use. I avoided taking a nap in the afternoon, although I was certainly tired enough to do so. Shared some of the details of the race with Avi and Paula, they are really good friends for enquiring about how it went. Evening was quiet, and I turned it a little bit early.

10-11-2025 Ride

Slept well, woke up a little after 5:00, read for a bit before getting up. Had some cereal for breakfast, then I got ready for my ride. I had enough time to change my rear wheel inner tube out with a patched one on my Fuji bike. Packed everything into the Sportage and drove over to the 4S Target, where I got a coffee at Starbucks since I was early. On this ride at the start, we had: Ray, Rob, Arnold, Rob T., Fritz, Cam, and James. We rode down CdS to San Dieguito Rd and took it into the flats, I hung back at the beginning but pushed the pace some on the CdS bump, passing everyone except Rob T., who was way out in front. I caught him after the turn, got out ahead, then took it easy on the descent. Rob T. caught up, and we didn't have to wait long at all for the others at the bottom. A decent pace line on the flats, all stayed together almost all the way, James fell back near the turn to ECR. We rode to VdlV, turning right there for a change and heading up the little hill. Fritz tried to turn too early, and I ended up hanging back and waiting for him. Then we put in a little effort to catch up to James, where I slowed down and rode with him. We met up with the others before the climb on Calzada del Bosque. Again, I started at the back and passed everyone except Arnold on the way up. Probably pushed too hard here, but I slowed down after this point. Waited for James at the top and we rode down Rambla de Las Flores to La Granada. Left turn, then up Los Morros and down La Bajada to Rancho Santa Fe Rd. Took it over to Manchester Ave, turning left after waiting for James. We rode in aero position for much of this next stretch, taking the turn to stay on this road and get down to I-5. Here is where we split from the others, we got on the bike path west of the freeway and took the gradual climb and short descent to Lomas Santa Fe Dr, crossing it and taking San Rodolfo Dr to Stevens Ave. Left turn there and back down to VdlV, where we turned left again and, from there, took the usual way back to Target. I was in aero position for most of the ride back across the flats, not pushing super hard but also not letting up too much. Then James and I rode up Three Witches at a slow pace and also took it easy on CdS. So, the last part of this ride was at dialed-down effort. During the ride I felt a little tightness in my right glute and hamstring, will have to watch this during the race tomorrow. Not sure why, but my heartrate monitor didn't sync with my Wahoo. On the plus side, my power meter did register.

Avg speed = 16.6 mph. Total mileage = 32.6 mi
Avg power =135 W. Weighted avg power = 162 W
Training Load = 115
Intensity = 74%

Had some time to relax after I got home, made some refried beans for lunch and watched some college football. Then we got ready to go to Ross Anderson's 60th birthday party. Headed over there around 2:00, it was located at Kenda's company office, located in a neighborhood in Encinitas. Saw Dennis Culver, Dennis Martin, Arlete Warrington, Louie Linarelli (married to Arlete), Oscar Ancheta, and met Ross's kids. Conversation was nice, theme was Polynesian, they had a roasted pig, dancers, including an impressive fire dancer. Kenda really put on a good party for him. We drove back and got home around 8:00, time for me to load some stuff into the car and relax a bit before going to sleep.

10-10-2025 Run/Swim

Slept okay. Woke up in the night and read for a while but got back to sleep after some tossing and turning. Went for an early morning run, taking the scooter down to the park and then running an easy-paced 5k.

Avg pace = 7:54/mi
Total distance = 3.15 mi
Elapsed moving time = 24:53
Avg heartrate = 130 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 9

When I got home, I tackled the dishes. Ann had been busy the previous day with cooking, and there were also a lot of containers that had been emptied from the fridge. So, it took a while. I ate a banana while doing the dishes, then after that was done I got ready for a swim at the WWC. They have a new barcode reader system for checking in. Had the pool to myself for a short while before Shannon started swimming as well. It was pretty busy by the time I got out after swimming 1000 yds. Was disappointed in the times for the 2 500s: 9:41, 9:43. Was breathing every 3 strokes, and that still doesn't seem as natural or efficient for me. Also not sure I believe the heartrate data below.

Avg pace = 1:56/100 yds (Zepp)
Total distance = 1000 yds
Elapsed moving time = 22:52 (Video)
Avg heartrate = 148 bpm (Zepp)
Relative Effort =  26
SWOLF = 38
Avg stroke rate = 22 bpm
Avg pull distance = 2.22 yds

Got gas at AM-PM after the swim, then rode home and had some toast and coffee for breakfast. I signed up for automatic payment for my Medicare Part B costs. A little later, I ran some errands in Escondido, including returning most of the 1" PVC pipe I'd bought from Home Depot, buying some tequila as a birthday present for Ross, and picking up his t-shirt, which came out looking pretty good. Came home after that, had some lunch, and watched a little TV, then took a nap in the afternoon, probably a longer one than I would have liked. In the evening, we went to the Escondido Performing Arts Center and sat outside in the Lyric Court listening to bluegrass music at a free concert. The opening act was the Honey Buckets, who had a really great guitar player and singer along with a good banjo player, a so-so mandolin player, and a bassist. The feature band was MohaviSoul, playing more Americana music. Their guitar player had a nice voice, the mandolin player not so much. The fiddle and banjo players were both quite good. I liked their covers much more than their original music. They ended up playing a pretty long set, finishing up by bringing the Honey Buckets back onstage and doing a couple of songs. We were both ready to go when the concert ended, which is a sure sign that it went a little too long for our taste. Home, and to bed.

10-09-2025 Swim/Ride

Slept pretty well and woke up around 5:45 (<!>). I had some time to kill before getting ready to head to the WWC for a swim. I had forgotten to take my tri suit out of my backpack after the Monday swim, so it was damp and smelly. Wore it anyway, met Avi there. There were some other swimmers there, but we were able to get two adjacent lanes. This was an interval training day, Here are the workouts we did, with corresponding times. Ended up doing 1550 yds in 26:13.

Felt pretty good swimming, Avi is swimming strongly, starting to get into the shape he had back when he was swimming a lot. It's good to see that power he has, he gives me somebody to chase after. Rode home after that, had a little time to eat something and then get ready for a bike ride with Paula. She showed up just before 10:00. I rode my Fuji and was disappointed to find that my Assioma pedals had lost their connection to my Wahoo again. Don't know what is going on, but it's a little troubling. We headed through the neighborhood via the route by Gideon's house, then took the extended route through 4S Ranch. I was finding some time to be in aero position. We rode through the Del Sur neighborhood as well, eventually getting to CdS and turning left. Down the hill and up the CdS bump, taking it in aero position, which was a struggle. We rode through the neighborhood that's west of San Dieguito Rd off CdS, then got back on CdS, staying on it past the 56 and eventually turning left on Carmel Mountain Rd. I was in aero position a fair amount during this part of the ride, taking CMR to Black Mountain Rd. Fairly slow on the steeper part of the climb but faster after the gradient dropped. We turned left there and rode up to Carmel Valley Rd, turning right there. The day had been just about ideal for riding, it was warming up by this time. Up and then down to Dove Canyon Rd, taking it to Dove Creek Rd, where we turned left and rode over to 4S Ranch Pkwy, taking it up to Lone Quail Rd, turning right there. To Camino San Bernardo from there, turning left and riding the normal way back into the neighborhood. We rode home via Poblado Rd to Duenda Rd. I generally kept a low pace, only occasionally doing a high-intensity interval while in aero position.

Avg speed = 14.0 mph. Total mileage = 25.1 mi
Avg power (estimated) = 114 W
Total elevation = 1770'
Relative Effort = 24
Avg heartrate = 109 bpm (Coospo)

I got back around 12:15, so I had just enough time to take a shower and get ready to go to my dental cleaning appointment. Nothing noteworthy about the cleaning, which went smoothly. Had some lunch when I got back, watched a little of Suicide Squad. Was funny in a wry way but too gory for me. I fell asleep for about 10 minutes while I was watching it. Went to happy hour at Phil's BBQ. Talked to Britt mostly, met Leslie from Web Press, I had seen her around B65 when I was working. Had a Coke while we chatted. Rode home after that, had dinner, and took another shot at reconnecting my Assioma pedals to my Wahoo. Then I watched some Thursday Night Football and playoff baseball while Ann plotted out a spring camping trip out to Monument Valley, with stops on the way there and back. Quiet rest of the evening.

10-08-2025 Ride/Hike

Slept pretty well, woke up about 5:45 after some vivid early morning dreams. Got up and got ready for a bike ride. Rode my Fuji through the neighborhood to Matinal Rd and took it to W Bernardo Dr. Normal way to John's place from there, finding opportunities to ride in aero position both for speed and practice. I had left the house a little late after doing most of the dishes, so I didn't dawdle. Near his place I noticed that my power meter pedals still weren't registering on my Wahoo. When I got to his house, I tried, without success, to reinitialize the sensors. Gave up and rode without power output on this ride. Jayden was out but not Vivian. I had brought pumpkin bread for them. John and I headed up to Scripps-Poway Pkwy and turned right, again I was looking for places to be in aero position, even on shallow climbs. Waited for John just after the summit, then we rode down to Mercy Rd together, and over to Black Mountain Rd. On this ride, for the most part, I rode at my pace and waited periodically for John to catch up. Took this road to Kearney Villa Rd and then to Ruffin Rd. I had a pretty good stretch on the flats by MCAS Miramar, second-fastest time for me there. But somewhere on that stretch 8 hit a crack in the road, and this is likely where I caused a slow leak in my rear tire. We stayed on Ruffin Rd until Balboa Ave, where we turned right and rode back to Kearney Villa Rd, turning right again and starting to head back. I had another decent stretch by the MCAS going back but was a minute slower than my fastest time. Waited for John at the turn to head up Pomerado Rd. Tried to keep the pace up on this gradual climb, but my legs were starting to tire, so it wasn't super fast. Back to his house the normal way from there, where Vivian had made smoothies for us and came out a little later to chat. My ride home from there, after the break, was fairly fast, had the benefit at times of a tailwind. Home via RB Rd to W Bernardo Dr. This was a bigger workout than usual. My right glute had been tender the previous day, and it was a little sore at the start of the ride. But it loosened up okay and wasn't a problem.

Avg speed = 17.2 mph. Total mileage = 45.4 mi
Avg power (estimated) = 155 W
Total elevation gain = 2120'
Avg heartrate = 123 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 67

Didn't have a lot of time after I got home. I had shaved earlier, so I took a shower and then called Bay Alarm Medical to set Mom up with a medical alert system. That took a little longer than expected, and I was late leaving for my volunteer shift. Took a burger and ate it at the hospital with fries, a Pepsi, and a Klondike bar. Had to rush at the end to finish before I started my shift. It was again busy at the start and was generally busier than usual. Had to help a guy eat his lunch (he'd broken his right wrist), but he was nice to talk to and it went smoothly. I got out of there just a little bit past time, then hurried home to change and drive with Ann to Kit Carson Park to meet Emily and Caleb for a short hike. We all started together, but Caleb and I got out ahead and ended up talking about fitness and beginning the discussion of doing a 5k over Thanksgiving weekend. Home after the hike around the park, had dinner and watched an episode of Foundation before turning in for the night.

10-07-2025 Walk

This was an easy workout day. I was dealing with a sore glute and some minor rib pain, presumably from the previous day's exertion, especially the longer run. I went for an early morning 1+hour walk around the neighborhood. Had some breakfast, took it easy in the early morning. I called a couple of medical alert companies, ended up liking Bay Alarm Medical more than Medical Guardian. Then I drove to T Shirt Mart in Escondido and ordered a shirt for Ross's birthday present. Went next to CarMax and got a firm price quote for the Sportage. I think we will sell it. Stopped and picked up some groceries at Food 4 Less before heading home. The afternoon was quiet, at home. Ann had gone to the beach with Kay to celebrate her birthday. In the late afternoon I took the rear cassette off my Fuji bike and cleaned it thoroughly. Then I took an hour or so and weeded the gravel path in the front, along with a patch of weeds in the rocks by the fence. That was a little painful, frequently getting up and down. As a result I had a quiet evening.

10-06-2025 Run/Swim/Ride

This was a busy, generally fruitful day. I slept somewhat fitfully, maybe because of the previous day's nap. Woke up early and stayed up. (<!>) I planned on going for an ocean swim, so in the early morning I went out for a run. Rode my scooter down to the park and did 6 laps, along with a little bit more to get to 10k distance. My sixth mile was my fastest, the middle four were about the same pace. Was dealing with a mild pulled muscle in my left rear rib cage, and my right glut was a little tender after the run. It was ideal conditions for a run, overcast, cool, and not too humid. Toward the latter part of the run, my heartrate band started slipping down, and that was annoying.

Avg pace = 7:36/mi
Total distance = 6.34 mi
Elapsed moving time = 48:11
Avg heartrate = 146 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 55

When I got home, I had a light breakfast, no coffee because of the upcoming swim. We left the house around 10:00 to head down to Mission Bay, stopped to get some gas at the AM-PM. No traffic on the way down, it stayed overcast, warmed up a little bit. We parked at Ventura Cove, I got Ann's bike out of the car (it was a real bitch getting both bikes in the car at home) and put air in the tires, then I put my rummage sale wetsuit on. It's a tight fit, heavier than the tri wetsuit that Gideon has lent me. Ann went riding while I got in the water and ended up doing seven lengths of the buoys. The wetsuit did a good job of keeping me warm, but it takes up water and is a tight fit around the shoulders. Was very buoyant, I didn't really need to kick much at all while swimming. I did okay, not great, at sighting the buoys, actually lost sight of them due to my goggles fogging up around one of the turns, so that slowed me down by about 10 seconds. This was a very different kind of swimming, many more strokes/minute and a significantly shorter pull distance. For the most part, I was breathing every two strokes, so it was like an elongated sprint, which is probably similar to what I'll be doing on Sunday. The shorter pull distance was due in part to my limited shoulder mobility, but I was gliding through the water more easily as well.

Avg pace = 1:47/100 yds (Zepp)
Total distance = 1218 yds
Elapsed moving time = 22:52 (Zepp)
Avg heartrate = 133 bpm (Zepp)
Relative Effort =  21
SWOLF = 87
Avg stroke rate = 29 bpm
Avg pull distance = 1.87 yds

I got a little sidetracked swimming back to the shore after the workout, so I was getting stuff from the car when Ann came back. Showered off the first layer of salt and changed, then Ann and I rode over to the boardwalk in Mission Beach and rode up to San Jose St, turning there to get to Mission Baja Tacos, where we had lunch. No horchata this time, and my breakfast burrito wasn't that great, kinda flavorless until I put some of the (really) hot sauce on it. Maybe we'll try a different taco place next time we come down. After lunch, we headed back to the boardwalk and rode up into Pacific Beach, to Diamond St, before turning around and riding back to the car, this time taking the path under the bridge to get back to Ventura Cove.

Avg speed = 6.2 mph. Total mileage = 5.69 mi
Total elevation gain = 30'

Putting the bikes in the car went a little more smoothly, with Ann's help this time, then we drove home (stopping at the library to pick up a State Park pass) early enough to avoid afternoon traffic. It was a quiet rest of the day and evening.

10-05-2025 Ride

Woke up after sleeping through the night, the previous day had been a busy and tiring one. I had oatmeal and coffee for breakfast, then checked in the garage to see if there were any problems with my Assioma pedals. Nope. I charged them, not sure what the glitch was that disconnected them from my Wahoo, but I'll keep and eye out. Ann was still asleep, so I got ready for what I planned to be a leisurely-paced bike ride. Switched out the battery in my heartrate monitor to get it back working. Rode my Canyon, down by the park and over to Highland Valley Rd, turning there and riding up part of the first climb before it gets steeper. Turned around and rode back to Pomerado Rd. I don't feel like I was going too hard on this initial stretch, and I kept my pace dialed back somewhat after the left turn. I think I started pushing a little harder, still not all-out, on the gradual climb up to the hospital. On the descent after that I kept pedaling instead of coasting, over to Poway Rd. From here I took the time trial route home with the exception of turning right onto Carmel Mountain Rd. Was quite slow up the little hill after the turn onto Camino del Norte but from the top of that hill I rode harder than usual all the way home and could tell that I was riding on tired, but not sore, legs.

Avg speed = 17.1 mph. Total mileage = 25.4 mi
Avg power = 141 W. Weighted avg power = 158 W
Total elevation gain = 1310'
Avg heartrate = 118 bpm
Relative Effort = 24
Training Load = 80
Intensity = 72%

Ann was up when I got home, thankfully. The rest of the morning and afternoon were spent around the house, not doing much, reading and watching some TV. I did take a nap in the afternoon, was still tired from the previous day. We had dinner with Emily and Caleb at Best Pizza & Brew in Carmel Mountain Ranch, was good to catch up with them.

10-04-2025 Ride

Well, this was an unexpectedly long and hard day in the saddle. Woke up a little before 6:00, had a brief rest before getting up and getting ready for the ride. I rode my Fuji, intending to get more practice riding in aero position. Through the neighborhood and then the short route through the 4S Ranch neighborhood to get to Target. It was 55 deg at the start, a little cool but easy to manage since I was climbing from the start. And it was noticeably warmer once I got up to RB Rd, due to the lake effect. My bike was shifting very smoothly after I swapped the direction of the chain to have the links with the openings in them on the inside rather than on the outside. I wonder if this also might explain why my chain has been coming off when I push hard on the pedals. That didn't happen on this day. At the start of the ride, we had the following riders: Ray, Jed, Rob, Fritz, Arnold, Andy, and Jhonar. We started off fairly slow, and I got out in front on the CdS bump, making the turn solo and riding about halfway down Three Witches before Rob caught up and passed me. We rode together to the turn onto El Apajo and waited for the others. Andy was riding pretty well on this day, he was behind us but not by a lot, and he hung in there all the way to the end. Up to VdlV, turning right and riding up to Paseo Delicias. I was near the back at the start but finished in front of the others, Arnold and Fritz weren't too far back. Then we rode to El Montevideo and took it over to Lago Lindo. I was out front again, trying to stay in aero position as much as possible. Made the turn onto El Camino del Norte in front and stayed there, without pushing too hard, all the way to the turn onto Ranch Santa Fe Rd. Others weren't too far back, I'm guessing they were in a group trying to catch up to me. Fritz and I got out in front on the stretch over to Olivenhain Rd. We made the turn, and the others started showing up but not Rob and Jed. Also, Romeo came in from the other direction to meet us and ride with us back to Oceanside. Rob's shifter battery had failed, and he didn't have a coin to open the compartment. Eventually he showed up, and a group of the riders helped him fix it while Romeo and I talked about his three weeks in Australia, visiting his wife's family in and around Sydney. Then we were off, riding down to El Camino Real and turning right, then left onto La Costa Ave, where I mostly rode behind the others and stayed in aero position. It's not easy for me to ride aero when I'm in the bunch, better when I'm in front or at the tail end. Pace picked up with Romeo showed up, I don't think he got the memo that this was supposed to be a chill ride. We rode down to PCH and headed north, through Carlsbad at quite a fast pace. I set a PR on the stretch between La Costa Ave and the Palomar Airport Rd underpass (7:57, 193 W), then we stopped at the Starbuck's, which has closed and may reopen as a new coffee shop. Waited for Andy to catch up, which took a while, then we rode into Oceanside and took the normal roads to get to Jed's house. Jed hadn't been at this house since the summer party (!), his brother Francis has been staying there. We relaxed for a while, had some snacks and drinks, then we were off again. At this point, Rob and Jhonar turned around and started heading back, while the rest of us stayed on Pacific St until we turned right onto Harbor Dr and followed it all the way around the marina to the cul-de-sac. I was lagging behind the others here, who were moving pretty fast, again finding time to be in aero position. Romeo led us back into town to Surfrider Way, where some people in a pickup truck yelled at us to stop at the stop signs. Left turn there and then another left on Cleveland St to get to Neptune Way, where we turned and got onto the San Luis Rey Bike Path at its terminus. A little weaving through the winding parts of the path until it straightened out, and this is when it got really fast. I think I was initially in the lead, in aero position, and Fritz passed me and gapped me. For a long time, I was trying to catch up to him, was gradually making progress, but I was going pretty much full gas. At some point, Arnold and Jed passed me, caught up to Fritz, and passed him. I eventually also caught up to Fritz and passed him, but he hung on my wheel and eventually helped me catch up to Arnold and Jed. The four of us were riding together when Romeo passed us easily and got in the lead, then really dropped the hammer. At this point, I couldn't keep up with the others, it was all I could do not to fall way back. So I kept them in sight until we got into the neighborhood, where I caught up. Once back on the path, I was a little better at staying with them, but the path was so winding that we had to watch our speed due to other riders around. Got to the beginning of the path at its intersection with the 76, where we waited for Ray and Andy to show up. My legs weren't cramping, but I was starting to get worried about the ride back, which was going to be painful if it was at this pace. We started back all together, at a slower pace, and Romeo split off by the park, since he lives near there. I got into aero position and was in the lead for much of the return back into north Oceanside, not sure if I led the whole way or not but it felt that way. On the return, we took the path section that got us back directly onto Pacific St, stopped there for a break to wait for Andy and Fritz to show up. From there, we retraced our path through Oceanside and into Carlsbad. I was regularly in the lead but others took turns as well, including Fritz, Arnold, and Ray. At some point along the coast I got out significantly ahead, the others must have hit a light or something. Again, we pushed the pace down the coast to the 7-Eleven, where Fritz was running out of water and wanted to stop. This stop turned into an extended stop as we waited for Jed and Andy to show up. They eventually did, had to fix Jed's chain that had come off and jammed between his frame and crank. We were off after that, still riding pretty fast but a little slower than before. Typically detour through downtown Encinitas. On the flats by Cardiff, Arnold, Fritz, and I were moving pretty good, and Ray came by us on the little climb back into Solana Beach. Arnold matched his pace, but eventually I was able to pass him. That took a fair amount out of me to do it, Arnold and I rode together to the turn onto VdlV and waited there for the others, who weren't too far back. To ECR from there, I led as usual on the stretch past the freeway to the turn, Fritz and Ray were close, and Ray passed us both after the turn to lead us to San Dieguito Rd. We had a ragged pace line here, and Andy pretty much stayed with us while Ray dropped back. At one point Fritz got out of the line and rode to the front but ultimately didn't break the line. I started the pace line and ended it with a long pull. By the gas station, where we didn't stop, Arnold started riding ahead, and I found I couldn't match his pace. I got fairly close in the early stages of the Three Witches climb, but my legs were done for the day. No cramping, just no power left. I'm sure I didn't fuel up enough during this long ride, a regular problem for me. He rode away, and I was in my lower gears trying to survive the climb. Ray passed me at some point, and I watched him get some distance before he slowed down and I caught him just before the summit. Jed was close as well. At the turn onto CdS, I decided to keep going, so Jed, Ray, and I were riding kinda together, with Jed leading. Down the hill and onto the last climb, and I passed the others for a time until the gradient lessened. They both passed me again, Ray also had some gas left in the tank. Jed and I were riding together, him in front and me trying to stay on his wheel, when I hit something in the road that made it sound like I had gotten a flat. I was frustrated, but it turned out no damage, so we continued on, almost catching Ray before the parking lot. Of course, Arnold was long gone, he really gapped us at the end, pretty remarkable after the day we all had had. I hung around by the cars, pretty wiped out, until Andy showed up, then I made my slow trek home, taking the normal Camino San Bernardo route. Was quite slow on this return, I had burned all my matches on the Bisikleta ride. But I made it home without any cramping. For some reason, my Wahoo had disconnected from my Assioma pedals, so I lost power data about 65 miles into the ride. I guess I never checked whether my heartrate monitor synced because I didn't have those data for the entire ride. Not great. Also, my Wahoo was still recording for some reason at least part of the time while we were at Jed's house, so there are a lot of spurious data points that dropped my actual average speed to the one stored in Strava.

Avg speed = 17.7 mph (My analysis). Total mileage = 89.0 mi
Bisikleta route avg speed = 18.2 mph
Avg power = 143 W (Excel, first ~65 miles). Weighted avg power = 169 W (Excel, first ~65 miles)
Total elevation gain = 2990'
Training Load = 275 (Probably inaccurate)
Intensity = 70% (Probably inaccurate)

Was pretty wiped out when I got home, had to sit in the garage for about five minutes to recover before going into the house. I was actually hungry, which is not common for me after longer bike rides. Watched a little NCAA football while I ate a fairly light lunch, had a short nap on the couch but woke up quickly. I went upstairs, thinking I'd lie down and take a longer nap, but it didn't happen. Ann came in later and told me about the cycling accident in Reno where Sue Goodenow was killed and Rew was injured, and it hit me hard. I had ridden solo on this stretch of US 395 Alt while visiting David and Christine. Just devastating news for that family and their friends. Did a little blogging after that, to take my mind off the tragedy, then I helped just a little bit with the pasta salad to take to the church potluck and game night. Saw Mary Mussatti there, was the first time I'd seen and talked to her in quite a while. The food was sparse for vegetarians, I didn't see a main dish and ended up having several different kinds of salads. Somebody brought out Costco pizzas later, and I had a slice of cheese pizza that helped a little bit. Ate a fair amount of the desserts to try and replenish my calories. We sat at a table with the Collings and Mary and got caught up with them. After dinner, Ann played Rummikub with several others, including Dave Peterson, while I watched. We didn't stay until the end, I was pretty tired by this point. Drove home and read for a while, finishing The Bourne Supremacy. Not a great read, although the action did pick up near the end. Questionable whether I'll read the last book in the trilogy, it won't be right away.
