10-01-2025 Ride

Somewhat restless night, too much caffeine later in the day wasn't a good idea. But I got back to sleep and slept past 6:00. After I got up, it was a more leisurely preparation for my Wednesday bike ride, since John was meeting me at our house. I got my Fuji bike ready, tightening the bolts on the aero bars to keep them from slipping. We were rolling a little before 7:30, and it was cool, below 60 deg F when we started. Headed through the neighborhood via Poblado Rd and taking some side streets to avoid traffic around Westwood Elementary School. John was slow on the climbs, and this was the order of the day. Up to RB Rd, where I waited for him to catch up, then got into aero position as much as possible there and on CDS. It was a little difficult due to traffic. Over to San Dieguito Rd, turning right there and riding down the hill to get to the flats. I was in aero position for most of the ride over to El Camino Real, initially tried riding slow enough that John could keep pace, but then I sped up the pace. Stayed in aero position after the left turn onto ECR to the base of the climb into Del Mar Heights, where I shifted into low gear and took it fairly easy up the hill. Waited for him after the light, then we rode down to the entrance to the 56 bike path. Headed east from there, staying on the bike path, with a little bit of aero position riding, until we got to Carmel Valley Rd. John was slowing down by this time, so we regrouped at the turn and stayed together past Del Mar Heights Rd until we got to the bottom of the gradual climb. I didn't ride hard here but did create a gap on the climb past Black Mountain Rd to the top, where I waited for him to catch up again. Down to Dove Canyon Rd, turning left and gapping him again on this climb, waiting for him just before turning onto RB Rd. Home via W Bernardo Dr, staying pretty much together for the remainder of the ride.

I made smoothies, and we ate some of the banana bread that Vivian had baked and sent over for me. Talked about Jayden and all his activities, among other things. Then I had to go in and grab a shower and get ready for my volunteer shift before 10:30, when I had a call with the Alight representative to sign up for Medicare Supplement insurance. That process was mildly frustrating, since the rep had to keep asking me questions about information that she already had, for documentation purposes. No real snags in the process, I probably couldn't have completed the application without her assistance, so in the end it was time well spent. Then I rushed to the hospital, had a fairly quick lunch and started my shift. For a change, it was really busy at the beginning, for maybe the first 45 minutes. I don't think there had been a morning volunteer in the ED. No new faces, and it wasn't as busy in the middle of the shift, did get a little busier toward the end. We watched the Padres win a playoff game, which was exciting. After the shift, I rode home, had a short break with a little TV, and ate dinner. After dinner I called Ben and talked to him about Mom's decision to stop the Visiting Angels contract. Disappointing but predictable. I started looking at medical alert services to bring this information to Mom and try to get her signed up for such a service. It turned out to be a tiring day for me, and I went to sleep early.
