Slept well, woke up a little after 5:00, read for a bit before getting up. Had some cereal for breakfast, then I got ready for my ride. I had enough time to change my rear wheel inner tube out with a patched one on my Fuji bike. Packed everything into the Sportage and drove over to the 4S Target, where I got a coffee at Starbucks since I was early. On this ride at the start, we had: Ray, Rob, Arnold, Rob T., Fritz, Cam, and James. We rode down CdS to San Dieguito Rd and took it into the flats, I hung back at the beginning but pushed the pace some on the CdS bump, passing everyone except Rob T., who was way out in front. I caught him after the turn, got out ahead, then took it easy on the descent. Rob T. caught up, and we didn't have to wait long at all for the others at the bottom. A decent pace line on the flats, all stayed together almost all the way, James fell back near the turn to ECR. We rode to VdlV, turning right there for a change and heading up the little hill. Fritz tried to turn too early, and I ended up hanging back and waiting for him. Then we put in a little effort to catch up to James, where I slowed down and rode with him. We met up with the others before the climb on Calzada del Bosque. Again, I started at the back and passed everyone except Arnold on the way up. Probably pushed too hard here, but I slowed down after this point. Waited for James at the top and we rode down Rambla de Las Flores to La Granada. Left turn, then up Los Morros and down La Bajada to Rancho Santa Fe Rd. Took it over to Manchester Ave, turning left after waiting for James. We rode in aero position for much of this next stretch, taking the turn to stay on this road and get down to I-5. Here is where we split from the others, we got on the bike path west of the freeway and took the gradual climb and short descent to Lomas Santa Fe Dr, crossing it and taking San Rodolfo Dr to Stevens Ave. Left turn there and back down to VdlV, where we turned left again and, from there, took the usual way back to Target. I was in aero position for most of the ride back across the flats, not pushing super hard but also not letting up too much. Then James and I rode up Three Witches at a slow pace and also took it easy on CdS. So, the last part of this ride was at dialed-down effort. During the ride I felt a little tightness in my right glute and hamstring, will have to watch this during the race tomorrow. Not sure why, but my heartrate monitor didn't sync with my Wahoo. On the plus side, my power meter did register.
Avg speed = 16.6 mph. Total mileage = 32.6 mi
Avg power =135 W. Weighted avg power = 162 W
Training Load = 115
Intensity = 74%
Had some time to relax after I got home, made some refried beans for lunch and watched some college football. Then we got ready to go to Ross Anderson's 60th birthday party. Headed over there around 2:00, it was located at Kenda's company office, located in a neighborhood in Encinitas. Saw Dennis Culver, Dennis Martin, Arlete Warrington, Louie Linarelli (married to Arlete), Oscar Ancheta, and met Ross's kids. Conversation was nice, theme was Polynesian, they had a roasted pig, dancers, including an impressive fire dancer. Kenda really put on a good party for him. We drove back and got home around 8:00, time for me to load some stuff into the car and relax a bit before going to sleep.
