This day was more of a workout than I planned. Had a decent night's sleep, got up early enough to eat some cereal and yogurt for breakfast. It was really foggy at the house but not particularly cold, temperature-wise. I wore short sleeves and a jacket, long-finger gloves. Through the neighborhood, legs felt good even though I've been riding every day since Tuesday. Took the fast route to the 4S Target, since I was running a little late. James was already there, and Andy showed up soon after. Then Jed pulled in and, as we were getting ready to start, Jed A. rode in. I figured it would be a small group. We headed east on CdS to RB Rd and took it down to Via Tazon, using that road to climb up to W Bernardo Dr. It was pretty foggy in the early parts of this ride, less as we got higher. We rode up and over to Bernardo Center Dr and took it down to Bernardo Heights Pkwy. Right there, then a left on Paseo Lucido, climbing back up to Bernardo Heights Pkwy, where we took a left and rode down to Pomerado Rd. Took a right there and then rode up to the top of Pomerado Rd. I put in a fairly big effort on that climb, had my third-fastest time up and the sixth-fastest ever for my age group. James had gotten pretty far ahead of us, and I was able to catch up to him just before the top. We all gathered after the turn and rode down to Scripps Ranch Blvd, where we turned right. A little climb up to Carroll Canyon Rd, turning left and riding across the freeway until we turned left on Maya Linda Rd and rode down to Gold Coast Dr. James and I were out in front, and we took this road all the way to Camino Ruiz. About halfway there, for some reason my Wahoo lost track of our route, but I basically knew where we needed to go. We stopped at that right turn and waited for the others, then rode down to a 7-Eleven and stopped there for a break. James discovered that he had a flat and changed it while we chatted. As we headed out from the break, I thought I noticed my ride being a little spongy. I couldn't see anything obvious. We rode to a park by the turn onto Calle Cristobal for a bathroom break. At the park I checked my rear tire, and it was indeed flat. Ended up having caught a wire that punctured the tube. I had it all repaired and ready to be pumped when they were done, used Jed's battery-powered pump; it worked pretty well, but I think it ran out of power to pump. It was close enough to work for me. We rode down Calle Cristobal, I was a little amped from fixing the tire and also didn't want to be in a group when I rode fast down the hill. So I pushed my pace and gapped the others. Hig 46 mph on the Sorrento Valley Blvd downhill, no brakes, felt pretty exhilarating, then I waited for the others at the turn onto Vista Sorrento Pkwy. This turned out to be a minor mistake. Jed and James got out ahead of me, and the others. At some point I realized that he didn't know where we were going to turn, so I turned on the jets and tried to catch him, unsuccessfully. At the turn I waited for James and told him to tell the others to wait there, but the message didn't get through. Then I rode hard to catch Jed, who was waiting for me a couple of lights ahead. We rode back, but by that time Andy, for some reason, was also on the wrong path. When we got back to the others we waited a little bit but Andy didn't show up. I called him and arranged to meet him later in the route. Then the four of us took Calle Mar de Mariposa up to Ocean Air Blvd, turned right, and rode it up to Carmel Mountain Rd. I pushed fairly hard here as well, Jed was also putting in a big effort. We waited for the others at the right turn onto Carmel Mountain Rd and then took the steady, shallow climb up to Carmel Country Rd, I had dialed my effort back by this time, to recover from trying to chase Jed down. The descent on Carmel Country Rd was fun, especially the latter steep part, and then we got onto the 56 bike path and reconnected with Andy. Then we took the bike path up to Rancho Santa Fe Farms Rd. Jed A. needed to get home, so he split off from us and headed back to Mira Mesa. The rest of us crossed over to Carmel Valley Rd and took it up to CdS. I pushed on the last little climb there but didn't set any records. We gathered at the turn and then took CdS all the way back to the start. I stayed at the back with Andy, who was feeling it from the ride. My legs were also ready for a break, so it wasn't a bad choice to stay with him. The others weren't too far ahead. When we finished I initially thought about leaving for home right away but stayed to chat for a bit instead. Then I rode home the original short way, again because my legs were tired.

My stomach was growling by the time I got home, so I ate lunch right away. Watched a little TV later, then had a short nap, which felt refreshing. I reviewed several of the Airbnb choices Ann had set up for our Vietnam trip and caught up ony blogging. After dinner, I swapped out the tires on my Canyon with new ones I had just received. The new Enve tires were relatively inexpensive, difficult to put on the rims, and look more like slicks. Will see how they ride and handle. While watching a TV show I also cleaned and re-waxed both of my current chains and got ready to swap them.
