12-28-2025 Ride

Woke up around 6:00 and got up to plan a route for the bike ride with Paula as well as eat breakfast. I put chain #2 back on my bike after re-waxing the previous evening. Also checked and put air into the new tires, all looks okay there. Paula showed up a little before 7:45, and I checked her rear tire, which had a flat the previous day. Reseated the tire bead and pumped it back up. I also made a minor adjustment to her rear derailleur, she said the chain can skip off the cassette in the middle gears. No obvious reason that I could find. We headed up Aguamiel Rd as a warmup, it was in the low 40s when we started (she wasn't wearing full-finger gloves). Took Duenda Rd over to Escala Dr. Going down that hill was cold, and I was in the wrong gear when we started up the steep climb, almost lost my balance but recovered, awkwardly. We took it over to Pomerado Rd and headed south, turning left on the second Paseo del Verano. This is an easier climb up to the winery, and we used the sidewalk to get over to Old Winery Rd. Up to Valle Verde Rd, turning right there and riding over to Espola Rd, where we turned left. We headed up this road until turning right on Bridlewood Rd, taking this little climb, and then turning right on Summer Sage Rd. Took this to Lake Poway Rd and turned left there, then rode up to Lake Poway Park, initially up to the top cul-de-sac, then down to the lower cul-de-sac, where we took some pics. Then it was the nice downhill back to Espola Rd, turning left there and riding past the high school before going down the hill and turning right onto Durhullen Dr. A left on Derringer Rd, which took us over to Tierra Bonita Rd and thus to Twin Peaks Rd. We took a right there and rode down to Midland Rd, turning left and taking it over to Hilleary Pl. To Community Rd, headed south there to Civic Center Dr, where we turned right and rode into and through Poway Community Park, exiting on Slack St. Over to Morene St, turning left and getting to Oak Knoll Rd, where we headed west back to Pomerado Rd. We turned right and stayed on it until turning right on Holland Rd, which started a climb for us that continued on Tobiasson Rd, turning into Crestwood Ave and then Cherrywood St. This got us to Maplewood St, where we turned left and got back to Twin Peaks Rd. A left turn there brought us back to Pomerado Rd, where we turned right. Stayed on this road until we turned back onto Escala Dr. On that slight downhill stretch, I thought I was riding a steady pace that she could follow, but she fell behind. We reconnected at the turn and rode back to Duenda Rd, turning right. Rode up to Corazon Pl, turning right there and going to the end of the cul-de-sac, where Paula took some pictures. Then it was back to Duenda Rd and home via Azucar Way. No speed records on this ride, but the day was really beautiful at the end of the ride.

Avg speed = 13.2 mph. Total mileage = 26.2 mi
Avg power = 116 W. Weighted avg power = 150 W
Total elevation gain = 2080'
Avg heartrate = 104 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 22
Training Load = 106
Intensity = 68%

When I got home, I had some of the bread that Paula had made me for Christmas while I watched a little TV. Then I spent some time cleaning up my Google Photos folder to reduce its storage space. Ate some lunch and had a quiet afternoon. We ate early and then went to Escondido for a show at The Grand Ritz Theater. This place is pretty nice, neither of us had ever been there. We had pretty good seats as well for the show, a Mosaic Theatricals production, called Countdown on Grand: An NYE Celebration. It was surprisingly good, even great at times. The fog machine was a little annoying at times (we were fairly close to it), but the performers - Mel Collins, Michael Washington, Jim Graft, Patrick Barnitt, and the D. Ben-jamin Band - were all very good. It started around 5:30, so we were home by 8:00, even after stopping to get gas, which was a definite plus. Will have to be on the lookout for future shows from this organization at this venue.
