12-30-2009 Ride

Ride with John and Dave from John's house, a long training ride out to Alpine and back. Headed up Scripps-Poway Pkwy and down the 67 to Vigilante/Moreno, which we took over to Willow. Right on Ashwood and over to Mapleview/Lake Jennings Drive. This road changes names several times, but we stayed on it all the way to the intersection at Tavern Rd in Alpine. From the bottom of the 67 grade, it was essentially uphill, with just a few downhill sections and few flats. I felt good throughout the first part of the ride, although it was chilly and it never really warmed up. We re-traced our route to get back, throwing in a 10-mile out and back on El Monte up toward the El Capitan dam. By this time, I was feeling it, not sore, just tired and without much drive in my legs. I gutted my way up the Lakeside grade on the 67, running out of gas near the top. From there, it was mainly downhill, and I cruised, conserving my energy. My new cyclocomputer worked just fine, and its functions are identical to my older one. Dave got a new Garmin Edge cyclocomputer, which is really cool.

12/29/2009 Ride

Ride from home over to Dave's house, where I met up with him and Dave. We planned on a 40-mile route, but it ended up being longer. It had rained recently, although I don't think we had any rain at our house. We headed up RB Rd to Camino del Sur, then headed west to the 56 bike trail. Took the trail down to El Camino Real, then over Carmel Valley Rd to the coast and through Del Mar. Turned right on Via de la Valle and took this all the way back to Del Dios. I think this is the fastest way to get back from the coast, with not a lot of uphills, just a little near the end. On Del Dios, we had the wind pretty much at our backs, so I just cruised right on up the grade. Another guy passed me right near the top of the first set of uphills, and I hung with him until he pulled away near the turn onto Via Rancho Pkwy. Dave had a flat on the climb, but I had already gotten to the top, so I ended up waiting for them. It was tough starting back up, but I got going pretty quickly. Crossed the freeway and headed up Pomerado back to Dave's house. Stopped there for awhile, then headed back home via normal route. Dave was slower than usual, due to his longer layoff from riding. John was strong, staying up with me on the flats and downhills.

12-27-09 Ride

Ride from home with John over to Joe's house, using the normal Centre City route to Iris, then left on Village. From his place, we headed up Centre City to Old Castle/Lilac Rd to Valley Center Rd. I was in short sleeves and shorts, and it was a little cooler than I had planned. I had a flat on the section of Centre City just past where Joe joined us, and I was wearing new short-fingered gloves, after my old pair had ripped apart on the previous ride. The climb up Old Castle was not as bad or as long as I had remembered it, about 2.5 mi with some 7% grade sections. On Valley Center Rd, Joe had a flat as well. The ride down into Escondido was colder than expected, as the day had become overcast. Back to Centre City on El Norte Pkwy, where we split up with Joe and headed home the normal route. My legs were tired from the previous day, but no soreness or cramping.

12-26-09 Ride

Ride from home over to John's house via the standard route to Pomerado and up Springhurst. From his place, we headed up Scripps-Poway Pkwy. I wasn't really feeling strong at any point on this ride, and the part up to the top of this road was particularly bad. It was cool and overcast throughout the ride. Down the 67 to Highland Valley Rd, which we took over to Archie Moore Rd and back to the 67. I found that I had lost one of my full-fingered gloves, which was a bummer. The section on Archie Moore has a couple of climbs, nothing too bad normally but they felt worse on this day. Other than on the steeper or longer climbs, I tried to stay with John, who is still riding slowly. At the connection back onto the 67, I looked over on the other side of the road and saw my missing glove. Eureka! From there, I essentially retraced my path all the way back home. Stopped at John's briefly, then headed home.

12-24-09 Ride

Ride on Christmas Eve morning with John from home out through the neighborhood to RB Rd and Camino del Sur. Turned right on Artesian Rd and followed the route from 12-3-09 up to Paseo Delicias in Rancho Santa Fe. We took this road over to El Camino del Norte and down through Olivenhaim to Rancho Santa Fe Rd. Took this road all the way to San Elijo Rd. This middle section of the road had a lot of gradual uphills, good for training for the Stagecoach Century in the middle of January. Through San Elijo Hills to Elfin Forest/Harmony Grove Rd. This is a good road to ride, although the minor climbs were more challenging on tired legs. Turned left on Country Club Dr, another road with minor climbs. Over to Auto Pkwy / Nordahl Rd and up to El Norte Pkwy. At this point, we were largely done with the climbing, and we headed back through Escondido on Centre City Pkwy. On the freeway over Lake Hodges, John ran over a nail and got a flat on his loaner bike. Changed the flat and headed on home. Again, it was cold at the start and cool throughout the ride.

12-23-09 Ride

Ride with John from his house up to the top of Pomerado, then down to Kearny Villa Rd. Went to Clairemont Mesa, where we took a left and headed into Tierrasanta. Turned on Santo Rd and took this over to Aero Dr, where we took a right. Over to Linda Vista Dr, which we took by USD and down to Napa, a short stretch over to Morena. This road is nice, it parallels I-5 for awhile. Then we turned right on Jutland, which has a very steep short section just past the turn. It continues to climb after that but not as steeply. Turned right onto Luna, then an immediate left onto Regents Pkwy, which we took over to Governor Dr. Governor connects into Genesee, which we took over to Torrey Pines Rd and down to the coast. This section of the ride was pretty hilly, with not much in the way of flats. Rode back up the bike trail all the way to Sabre Springs Pkwy, to avoid the construction on Poway Rd. Took this road all the way to Springhurst and back to John's house. This is a good 50-mile ride, with a lot of challenge in the middle part and the last little climb back to his house to end it. The weather was cold at the beginning but warmed up enough to ride with a long-sleeve jersey and tights. Again, I felt good throughout, with tired legs at the end but not much soreness and no cramping.

12-21-09 Ride

Ride from home with John, Dave, and Jim. Headed out Centre City Pkwy to Deer Springs and back via Twin Oaks Valley Pkwy. Back via Barham to Mission, then over Tulip to Valley Pkwy and up to Centre City. The entrance ramp to the freeway was blocked, so we took a detour on Felicita, by the park and back using Via Rancho Pkwy. This is a fairly easy 30-mile ride, with only gradual climbs that are mostly positioned in the first half of the ride. I felt really strong during this ride and had trouble staying back with the others. John had some kind of mechanical problem with his bike and later had to get a new chain, gear cluster, rear derailleur, and rear wheel dropout.

12-19-09 Ride

Ride from John's house with him and Dave. It was somewhat cold at the start, but not cold enough for tights. We headed out Pomerado/Miramar Rd to Eastgate Mall, then took Genesee to Torrey Pines Rd going south. Turned on La Jolla Shores Dr and took this road down through La Jolla, getting near the coast. A short section on La Jolla Pkwy, then onto Hidden Valley Rd and Via Capri. This is the steep part of the ride, particularly the parts where Hidden Valley turns onto Via Capri, and near the top of Via Capri, as it approaches Mt Soledad. I made it without stopping, but it was slow going. After a rest at the top, we headed back down via Soledad Mountain Rd down to Balboa Ave, which we took all the way to Kearny Villa Rd. This road connects to Miramar/Pomerado Rd, and we headed back the way we had come. This was a tough 40-mile ride, particularly the steep section. Still, I felt good and didn't have any soreness in my legs at the end, only tiredness.

12-18-09 Ride

Ride after a half-day of work, from work, with John. We went on Bernardo Center Dr to Camino del Norte out to San Dieguito Rd, which we took all the way to El Camino Real and over to the 56 bike path. Rode up to Camino del Sur, then took this road back to RB Rd and back to work using Via del Campo. It was a nice day for a ride. My cyclocomputer flew off on Camino del Norte, and it quit working.

12-5-09 Ride

Solo ride from home. It was 41 degrees out at the start, so I had my tights and long gloves. Headed out Centre City Pkwy and Old 395 to Old Castle Rd. This part of the ride was somewhat warmer, and I thought I would be able to take the tights off and switch to fingerless gloves at the top of the grade on Old Castle. But it never really warmed up, staying overcast the entire ride. The climb up Old Castle was harder than I had remembered it, particularly the section after turning back east beyond the switchback. Old Castle to Lilac Rd, then right on Valley Center Rd. This part was flat to slightly downhill until just before the long grade down into Escondido. Back via BVP the normal route. This section was mostly flat to downhill, with just a little small uphills, and I must have had somewhat of a tailwind because I rode this section pretty fast. On the last hill on Aguamiel, I was tired and my quads complained a little, but I wasn't overly sore or tired the rest of the day, just cold.

12-3-09 Ride

Ride at lunch with the HP crew. First time out with them, and I was very surprised that they didn't really push the pace as hard as I thought on the flats and that they were nearly all better climbers. Oh well, it gives me something to work on. Went out Via del Campo to RB Rd, then over to Artesian Rd. This is a nice road, little traveled, but you have to watch out for a series of speed bumps after a fairly long downhill. Get to a gate, which you have to lift your bike over, then it's uphill through Rancho Santa Fe. A series of roads eventually leads you back to Del Dios, then its through the town and left onto La Gracia Rd. Connected via a series of roads to Calzada del Bosque, which connects into Via de Santa Fe. Took this to San Dieguito Rd, then up the hill to Camino del Sur. This is where I fell behind nearly everybody on the hill. Back via the same general way we came.

11-27-09 Ride

Ride while staying up at Lake Arrowhead for Thanksgiving. We were staying by the golf course off of Grass Valley Rd, decent place. Weather was nice, although it was cool in the shady areas. Onto Grass Valley to Peninsula, then over to North Bay Dr, which I took to the 173 and headed north. There were signs saying that this road was closed ahead, but I was on it for at least 5 miles and it looked like it kept on going. Very good road to ride, hardly any traffic. Went past a gun club. The ride out was pretty much downhill, which made the ride back challenging. I turned onto Grass Valley Rd on the way back, and this had some steep sections. Took it all the way back to Peninsula, then over to North Bay Dr again, where I turned right and headed through Blue Jay out to the 18. Past the high school, then in toward Lake Arrowhead Village on the 173. This section was a nice ride, mostly downhill until just past the dam, where it climbed for a little bit. Over to North Bay Dr, where the climb was longer and steeper. Then back to the place we were staying.

I intended to ride on Saturday as well, but we woke up Saturday morning to 4" of snow on the ground. It was fun to walk around in, but I had real trouble getting out of the driveway on Sunday. Thanks to help from Mike and Scott, we finally got the car pointing down the driveway so we could leave.

11-24-09 Ride

Solo ride from work on the old extended loop, going out to Poway Rd and back. It was warm, and I had forgotten my sunglasses. I saw a group of riders on the way back, thought they might be the HP group, and rode to catch up with them. I did, and they were. I could hang with them okay, although a couple of the riders were much stronger than the rest, including me. Will try to get out and ride with this group more often.

11-14-09 Ride

Ride from home with John out BVP to Citrus, then around El Norte Pkwy to Broadway and up Jesmond Dene. Was a little chilly at the start, but it didn't take long for me to shed my jacket and full-fingered gloves. Up to Deer Springs and back via Twin Oaks Valley Pkwy. To Borden, by CSUSM, and then to Centre City Pkwy via Mission. Home the normal way. Felt good the entire ride, never really pushed the pace. I had gotten a new chain and rear gear cassette installed on Friday, and the shifting was much more solid. Still hearing a squeak when I pedal, and I now suspect it's the bearings in the pedals themselves.

10-31-09 Ride

Ride with Dave from home on Halloween morning. He had taken the weights off his bike, and I thought I was in for a long day of chasing after him. It was a little chilly when we left but not too bad. Headed through the neighborhood to RB Rd, then out Camino del Sur to Carmel Valley Rd to Del Mar Heights Blvd. I was outpacing Dave early on the hills, but he came on strong on a couple of hills on that last road, including the final short, steep section before it drops down into Del Mar. I hung on his wheel, but it was a challenge. We got onto PCH and headed north, looking for a fast pack to ride with. There were lots of riders, but we passed most of them. Eventually, we hooked up with some other riders who caught up with us and caused Dave to push the pace. Again, I was basically hanging onto his wheel most of the time, only taking short turns in the lead. Turned inland at Leucadia Blvd and headed uphill. By this time, I think Dave had overextended and didn't have a lot left for the rest of the ride. He slowed down significantly throughout this section of the ride up to San Elijo Hills, which has a fair amount of uphill to it. The weather had turned out great. Back via Elfin Forest and Harmony Grove. This road has been paved, and it's really nice to ride on. I slowed down a bit on this section to stay closer to Dave. Came into Escondido via Hale to 9th to Centre City, and home the normal route. The last stretch was a little tough, as my quads started to cramp just a bit. I recovered quickly after the end of the ride, with more muscle tiredness than soreness.

10-29-09 Ride

Ride after the second session of an extended DDO staff meeting with Mark Vaughn and Karl Walters. I rode from home and met them at the bottom of the hill by Aguamiel. Went up and down to Duenda a couple of times while waiting for them. Then we rode out to the top of the first steep hill on Highland Valley and back. I kept pace with Mark pretty well throughout the ride, except on the second half of the climb, when he outpaced me and I couldn't keep up. On the way back, we slowed the pace to keep riding with Karl. Still and all, I felt good about my performance, given his credentials.

Time trial ride with Dave, riding to and from his house. It was pretty foggy throughout the ride. I really pushed the pace the entire time, but we seemed to catch every light going down Poway Rd. Finished in 53:33, which was disheartening given the effort I put into the ride.

10-24-09 Ride

Ride from John's house with him, Dave, and Jim. Dave was riding with 30 lb of weights on his bike frame. Was cool at the start but not cold, and we began the ride uphill, which warmed me up. Up to the top of Pomerado, then down to Kearny Villa Rd and over to Balboa. We took this all the way to Soledad Mountain Rd and up to the top. Just before the turn, Jim had a flat. I got up to the top and waited for a little while, then turned around to ride down and back up the last bit with John. I ended up missing my turn and heading down the wrong road for about half a mile. Oops. Turned around and met the guys up by the cross. We headed down Via Capri, which is a 15% grade and very rough pavement at the top. Too many turns to go very fast at any point, but it would be a wild ride for the uninhibited cyclist. We headed back via Torrey Pines Rd, which I had forgotten was a gradual climb up to UCSD. Got on La Jolla Village Dr, which turns into Miramar Rd, and headed back the way we came. John had been out for a couple of weeks with a recurrence of blood clots, so he was slow and running out of gas on the last climb up Pomerado. Even still, he hung in there the whole way, which is amazing to me. The guy has a gritty constitution and do-it attitude. I felt good the whole way, no problems motoring up Pomerado while trying to keep my heartrate around 165 bpm.

10-18-09 Ride

Ride from home over to Dave's house for the time trial loop. It was misty on the way over, and Jim called to say he wasn't riding. Dave had about 50 lb of weights on his bike! I started out slow to allow him to warm up, then rode at a moderately fast pace up to the top of Espola. Then we really flew down Poway Rd, with Dave setting a mean pace and us catching every light. Got to the Ted Williams Pkwy turn and thought I wouldn't have a chance for a new PB. Still, I really pushed it up that road, then went at a fast clip up and down Pomerado, where Dave kept right there with me and helped push the pace. Finished in 52:37, a new PB by 1 sec.

10-17-09 Ride

Ride with Dave and Jim from home out BVP to Citrus. Initial part of the ride was slightly chilly, but I knew it would warm up, and it did on BVP before Citrus. Citrus to El Norte Pkwy, then down to Ash, which we took over to Rincon. This is a nice road to ride, with a short little hill to present a challenge. Rincon/Country Club to Centre City Pkwy, then up to Deer Springs. I felt pretty strong going up this slight grade and kept my pace pretty swift. Down Twin Oaks Valley to Buena Creek, where we took a right. This is a really great road, particularly about a mile into it. Nice scenic downhill, ending up at Santa Fe/Mission Ave. Took this over to Las Posas, then San Marcos to Bent/Craven and the regular Barham route back to Mission. Connected to Washington, then to Centre City and back the normal way. This is actually a pretty good 40-mile training route, with no steep climbs and much of the effort concentrated in the first half. Felt really good at the end, with no soreness or cramping.

10-10-09 Ride

Ride with Jim and Dave, starting from Jim's house. I had given blood on Wednesday, and it turned out to be a drain on my energy level. Went over Duenda to W Bernardo Dr and up to Rancho Bernardo Rd, then up to Camino del Sur. Dave was carrying about 25 lbs of weight, and I still struggled to stay with him up RB Rd. I pretty much trailed the others on Camino del Sur. We turned on San Dieguito Rd and rode down into Fairbanks Ranch. Particularly with the weight and his tuck style, Dave is impossible to stay with on downhill sections. Took this road around to El Camino Real, and I was still riding pretty slow but keeping up. Up the hill on El Camino Real, Dave took off and I couldn't keep up. Gathered together at the top and stayed together for awhile, getting onto the bike trail and riding up to Camino del Sur. I kept pace and led out starting at this point in the ride, as the weight that Dave was carrying started to take its toll. Turned on Camino del Sur, then again on Carmel Valley Rd, which we took to Dove Canyon Rd and over to RB Rd. Home via the Matinal route. I always forget about the gradual uphill on RB Rd coming out of 4S Ranch, and it was a minor challenge again. Felt better at the end of the ride than at the beginning.

2009 Tour de Poway

Rode this ride with John and Dave. I was a little nervous before the ride, thinking I would really have to work to keep up with Dave. The weather was cool at the beginning. We watched the Century riders go by, and I cheered Kevin on with his Team in Training group. We were lucky enough to get to the starting line right before the beginning of the ride, and we were near the front of the pack. Started off the ride fairly fast, riding together until the beginning of the climb up the Poway grade. I kept the pace pretty high on this climb, with my heartrate staying at or above 170 bpm for nearly all of the time going up. Got to the top with some energy to spare and waited for Dave and John to catch up. We rode together until the small climb up to the pass by Mt. Woodson, where I separated again and rode essentially solo on the long gradual downhill to Dye Rd. Waited for them to catch up, then we rode together through Ramona, using an alternate series of roads that put us out onto the 78 via W Haverford Rd. The downhill was fast, and Dave was really going fast, too much for me to keep up. We kept together on the 78 after Dave waited for us to catch up, then separated on the hill out of San Pasqual Valley. Regrouped again and rode together until the small uphill section on W Bernardo Dr. Went across the Lake Hodges pedestrian bridge for the first time. The path on the north side of the lake to get to the bridge is rough and hard on the tires. Sag stop at the park, where we had some food and fluids. Took off and stayed together up most of the climb to Rancho Bernardo Rd, when we separated again on the climb. I kept going, hooking up with a guy who was riding a Bianchi at about the same pace as me. Went all the way to the turn onto Camino del Sur, where I waited for the guys to catch up. They weren't too far back. Rode together for awhile, then we separated again on a gradual climbing section, where I caught back up with the Bianchi guy and another guy. We ended up riding together for a good portion of the ride on Camino del Norte. I met another guy after the turn on Pomerado Rd who noticed my HP jersey and asked whether I ever did the Tuesday/Thursday rides. The early ride has a 25 mph pace line, so I don't think I'll be joining that group any time soon. He wasn't in the Tour, just out for a morning ride, so we hung together on most of Pomerado Rd. He was gracious enough to slow his pace down a little in order to allow me to keep up. I waited for John and Dave to catch up at the turn onto Metate, and I was really feeling it. My left hamstring had started to tighten up by this time, so I was ready to coast on in to the finish. We tried to get a picture of all three in the same frame but missed it. On the final stretch on Community, I was just hanging on for the end, nursing my twitching leg. Dave had a sprint burst just after the Poway Rd crossing, but I couldn't keep up. He ended up slowing, since his leg started twitching too. Finished the ride in 3:24:30 riding time, and I felt tired but really good, at least as soon as I stopped pedaling. The weather was fairly cool throughout, and maybe that factor contributed to the slower pace that I ended up riding. I sure didn't feel like I had a lot left in the tank at the end of the ride.

10-2-09 Ride

Time trial loop in the morning with John and Dave, starting from Dave's house. Dave had taken off the weights he has been riding with for the past 6 weeks or so. Our pace was slower than usual, since we were saving strength for the Tour de Poway coming up on Sunday. On the small climb up to Poway Rd, Dave really ate my lunch. I couldn't keep up with him, and he left me gasping. Wow! We pretty much stayed together down Poway Rd, then separated some on Sabre Springs Pkwy. Again, Dave headed out, but was able, just barely, to hang onto his wheel. Seesaw action on Ted Williams Pkwy, then we motored up to the hospital on Pomerado Rd, averaging over 20 mph up this slight incline. On the downhill near Dave's house, he put on a burst of speed that was really impressive and that I couldn't match. Alas. Finished in 53:58.

9-27-09 Ride

Ride, after church, with John and Dave, starting from Dave's house. I rode over there, and it was already hot and somewhat windy. We headed up Pomerado to Poway Rd, then turned to go up to the 67. The climb up Poway Rd was brutal, very hot with the wind at my back to keep any breeze from helping. Dave got up to the top about 3 minutes later, and John followed abour 4 minutes after that. John looked wiped out. We headed up to Ramona, then around via Dye Rd to Warnock Rd to San Vicente Rd. Stopped at the AM/PM on the corner, and John and Dave refueled. I was hot and my throat was dry, but I just wanted to continue, so I didn't get anything to drink, which in hindsight was a mistake. We headed back to Highland Valley Rd, then up to the top, working against a headwind much of the time. Slowed the pace way down from this point on, to hang with John. Coming down was fun as always, although the heat was wearing us out, John in particular. Got to Pomerado, and headed back home for a pit stop. By that time, John was completely spent, and I was feeling really tired. We rested for awhile, then headed back over to Dave's house. I rode back via Rancho Bernardo Rd to West Bernardo Drive and on home. Right at the end, my quads were a little stiff. Through the rest of the day, I was incredibly thirsty, having sweated more than I had in a long time. John told me later that he lost 7 lbs during this ride.

9-20-09 Ride

Time trial loop, starting from home, and riding with Dave and Jim. John was riding the Tour of Eastlake. No really fast pace throughout the ride, and we hit a lot of red lights. Even so, I felt good throughout, considering the workout I had the previous day. Finished in 54:20.

9-19-09 Ride

Solo ride from home. Tried to connect with Dave, but he didn't respond. Out to Via Rancho Pkwy, then over to Del Dios and down to Via de la Valle. Took this down to Camino del Mar and through Del Mar down to the coast. Saw Kevin Miller riding with the Team in Training at the base of Torrey Pines, going the other way. Went up the inside route, and I was blowing hard, but I kept it pretty much at or above 7 mph. Lots of walkers. Got to the top of the hill, and the sun started to come out from the morning fog. Back the usual way to Pomerada and Scripps-Poway Pkwy, where I turned right and headed up, slower than usual. Rode to the base of the big climb, then headed over Sycamore Canyon to Garden Rd, which connects to Poway Rd. Down to Community, then over to Twin Peaks, which I used to connect to Pomerado. All the way down Pomerado and home by the park route. Felt good throughout the ride, although my quads were really screaming at the end, when I really pushed it up the final small hill on Aguamiel.

9-13-09 Ride

Ride with Joe, starting from his house and heading out Village to Broadway, then over to El Norte Pkwy, which we took up to Valley Pkwy. Headed over to Lake Wohlford Dr, then up this climb. The wind was at our backs, and I averaged about 8 mph going up, which I thought was pretty good. Got to the top and headed back down to meet up with Joe and ride with him back up to the top. Then we continued over to Woods Valley Rd, which we took to Valley Center Rd. Headed east on Valley Center Rd all the way to N Lake Wohlford Rd, which is by the Valley View Casino. The wind was at our backs for this stretch, and we made good time, even though we were going up a slight incline. Headed back to Lake Wohlford and the climb here wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Cruised down the grade, although the wind made the turns tricky. Then we headed back the same way we came. Felt a little tired at the end but not too much. I kept the pace down at times to stay with Joe, so that reduced my output effort level.

9-12-09 Ride

Solo ride while up at Fellowship Camp at Cedar Glen. Took Farmers Rd into town, then bought a Gatorade because I had forgotten to bring a water bottle. Headed out toward Cuyamaca Lake on the 79. This isn't very steep, but perhaps it was the altitude (and a fairly stiff cr0sswind) that seemed to make this part of the ride so difficult. Got to the lake and continued on the 79, past Paso Picacho campground and about a mile down a fairly steep grade, where I turned around and headed back. The ride back was more downhill and also more into the wind, so it was still a workout. Got back to the Camp Cedar Glen entrance and went back up this road very slowly, not a lot of gas left in the tank for a comparatively short ride.

2009 Tour de Labor

Ride, starting from the Sizzler in Ramona, with John and Dave. We took the Old Julian Hwy over to the 78, then on up to Julian and back down. Dave had forgotten his sunglasses, so we stopped at the Ramona AM/PM and he picked up a stylin' pair. Turns out he didn't need them, since John had a spare pair. It was cool at the start, but it didn't last long at all. It wasn't too hot, but it was warm enough. I made it up to Julian in 1:36, averaging 12.9 mph. This was better than previous years, but we didn't have a stiff headwind to battle. A number of stops along the way to let the others catch up after climbs, although I did the Santa Ysabel-to-Julian stretch non-stop. Overall, I felt really strong going up to Julian, and I averaged 9 mph for much of the last 7 miles. On the way down, we had some wind to contend with, and both John and Dave are better riders in the flats and slight uphills. I kept up, but it was a struggle at times. I caught a second wind toward the latter part of the ride and that helped in the final miles. Felt good at the end, no muscle cramping or soreness.

Average speed = 16.9 mph. Total mileage = 41.6 mi.

9-6-09 Ride

Time trial loop with Dave, riding from my house. I intended to take it easy, and we actually kept a fairly steady pace during the first part of the ride. I didn't push it at all, just kept up with him. He was carrying 16 lb of extra weight (!!!). I pulled ahead a little on the climb up to Poway Rd and really had to pedal to keep up with him on the downhill from there. We traded places and set a fairly fast pace on Poway Rd, but nothing really draining. Again, steady pace up Sabre Springs Pkwy, where I again pulled ahead of Dave a little. We stayed together through the rest of the ride, going at a pretty good clip up Ted Williams, then really dropping the hammer on the climb up to Pomerado Hospital, which we negotiated at a 20 mph pace. It was a fast ride back to his house, and I finished in 53:10.

9-5-09 Ride

Ride from John's house with him and Dave. Dave rode from his house, and we took off up Springbrook/Angelique up to Cypress Canyon to the top of Pomerado Rd, then down to Mira Mesa. Right on Black Mountain Rd, which we took all the way to the 56 bike path. We ran into some fog, and it was really muggy. Took the bike path to Ted Williams Pkwy, which we connected into Twin Peaks Rd and up to Espola, where we left Dave to see his daughter play in a soccer game. John and I continued up to the top of Espola, then down Poway Rd to Garden, where we turned left and followed to Sycamore Canyon Rd. This is an area of Poway I had never seen, and it was very rural. This road has a short, kinda steep climb up to an unused ramp to get onto Scripps-Poway Pkwy, so we did this, then rode up to the top of the hill. There was a Team In Training group riding around the same time, but I didn't see Kevin. Turned around at the 67 and followed this road all the way back to Springbrook, then back to John's house. I felt like I had a good pace throughout this ride, so I was surprised to see my average speed be so low. Could be a miscalculation, but I'll go with it.

8-30-09 Rides

Time trial loop, starting from home, with John and Dave. I didn't really push the pace for any significant lengths of time. Tried to help John set a PB, but I got behind him and Dave going up to the hospital and couldn't catch up on my tired legs. Riding time of 54:50.

Total mileage = 23.1 mi.
http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/ca/san-diego/854917700575

In the afternoon, Joe called and asked if I was interested in a ride. I said sure, why not, so we met at church in the afternoon and took off via Juniper to Sunset, then down to BVP and over to check out the Orfila Winery off of San Pasqual Rd. Then we headed over to Via Rancho Pkwy, which Joe was willing to climb up to Del Dios. Yikes, it was hot. I took it really slow, even after the turn onto Del Dios, where there is the mild climb for another half mile or so. After that, it was mostly downhill and flat. The ride didn't take a long time, but it was strenuous, given the temperature and having ridden fairly hard earlier in the day. Felt better at the end of the ride in my legs than at the beginning.

Average speed = 14.7 mph. Total mileage = 14.7 mi.

8-29-09 Ride

Ride from home with Dave, after a week off (Laura up to school to start her sophomore year). It had been hot over the last couple of days, so I was looking for the ride to be hot, even with an early morning start. Headed over to BVP and went up to Valley Pkwy, which we took over to Lake Wohlford Rd and up this grade. According to MapMyRide.com, this climb has some 8-9% grades in it, and I think they are mainly in the first mile. Tough, since I hadn't been riding. Got up it okay, but it was a chore. Through the rolling terrain to Woods Valley Rd, which we took back to Valley Center Rd and headed back to Escondido. This road is an excellent downhill, nearly 3 mi, and the road is now in good shape. Took a right on El Norte Pkwy and headed down to Centre City Pkwy, which we followed through town. We heard and saw the end of a pretty bad car accident at Grand and Centre City, where a pickup smashed into an SUV and caused it to flip over. Luckily, nobody was hurt, although it got my adrenaline pumping. We had the wind at our backs on the way back home, and that helped a fair amount. For much of the ride, I sat on Dave's wheel and let him do more of the work. Finished okay, I was tired but not sore.

Average speed = 18.0 mph. Total mileage = 35.8 mi.

8-16-09 Ride

Sunday morning time trial loop, starting from home, with Dave, John, and Jim. It was good to have all four riders out on the road. Both Dave and I took it easy, making sure we kept around either John or Jim. I don't remember my time, but it was probably in the 57-58 minute range.

8-15-09 Ride

Ride from home over to Dave's house, where we took off up Espola to Twin Peaks, down to Community, and over to Poway Rd. Up Poway Rd to the 67, then down toward Lakeside. We turned on Vigilante/Moreno and followed it to its end at Willow Rd, where we turned around and went back up the 67. The first part was grueling as always, but I felt pretty strong and didn't really fade when I reached the middle flat part. Kept up a good, steady pace on the second uphill section. Turned left on Scripps-Poway Pkwy and went down to Community, which we took over to Poway Rd. West on Poway Rd, then we turned left on Pomerado and headed up to the top. The short hill here was a grinder but at a fairly steady pace. Right on Cypress Canyon and over to Angelique/Springhurst, which we took to Sabre Springs Pkwy. Still feeling pretty strong. Headed over to Ted Williams Pkwy on this road. Dave took the lead here, but I passed him near the turn and headed on up to the light at Pomerado. We turned here and headed back to his house. There was a small group of cyclists that started riding when we passed them, so Dave dropped the hammer (what was left of it, at this point in the ride) and we smoked them going up to the top at the hospital. Down to his place at the usual fast pace. Stopped at his house for a juice then headed home via the normal route. Even on this last leg, I felt strong, with no muscle tightness or cramps. Muscles were tired afterward but not particularly sore.

8-9-09 Ride

Sunday morning time trial loop, starting from home. John was back riding this loop for the first time in a long time, and it was great riding with him. We took it easy on the ride, keeping generally up with him except for the climbs. I was glad for the break from a hard pace, since my legs were tired from the previous day. Even still, our pace was decent, and John set a new PR. Riding time of 55:00.

8-8-09 Ride

Ride with Dave from home out by the park and up Pomerado all the way to Scripps-Poway Pkwy, which we took up to the 67. I hadn't ridden this hill in some time, and I felt like I really had to spin to get up it, in lowest gear. I didn't have to get out of the saddle, but it wasn't my fastest time by far. North on 67 to Highland Valley Rd, which we took back to Pomerado. The downhill after Mt. Woodson was fun, and the climb to the high point on Highland Valley Rd wasn't bad at all. As always, this downhill was a blast. I was tired but not sore as we crossed the I-15 on Pomerado and climbed the short hill before the park. I motored up this hill and kept up a good pace all the way home, including a steady final push up Aguamiel. I was gassed at the end but feeling generally good. Dave was toasted at the bottom of the hill before the park and finished in a struggle.

8-6-09 Ride

Solo ride from home up through Escondido to Deer Springs, then back Twin Oaks Valley Pkwy to Mission and over to San Marcos Blvd via Las Posas. Down this road all the way to the coast, then I headed south to Encinitas Blvd, where I turned and met up with the church beach group at Moonlight Beach. The wind was at my back in the early part of the right, then it appeard to shift into a northwesterly direction, which had me fighting it up to Deer Springs and down to the coast. I had given blood the previous day, and I think this factored into me feeling at a low energy level. I felt stronger toward the end, probably because I had a general following wind riding down PCH. I was sure glad to be done, although I was more tired than sore.

8-2-09 Ride

Ride from home over to Dave's house for the Sunday morning time trial loop. Dave and I stayed together all the way to the uphill to Poway Rd. Dave breezed down the hill, and I had to catch up, then he couldn't keep up with me on the rest of Poway Rd. A little bit of separation on Sabre Springs Pkwy, then we stayed pretty much together the rest of the ride. I separated somewhat after turning onto Pomerado, but I think it was more because he got slowed by lights. We stayed together the rest of the way. I felt okay in this ride, but I must have been tired from the previous day's ride. Riding time of 53:24.

8-1-09 Ride

Solo ride in the morning from home (Dave had house chores), out Bear Valley Pkwy to E Valley Pkwy, then right on Lake Wohlford Rd. After you make the turn heading north, the next mile is pretty steep, but the second mile is nowhere near as bad. There is a false flat near the top that is kind of a pain, then it's rolling hills as the road follows the lake. It's gradually uphill then, with a short steep section before it connects with Woods Valley Rd. Took this road, which has a nice, gradual downhill all the way to Valley Center Pkwy, where I headed right and connected with Lilac Road. This section of the ride was flat to downhill until I turned onto Old Castle Rd, where it had an uphill section of less than a mile, followed by a great downhill and flat section all the way to Old 395. Turned left and followed this all the way back through Escondido and home by the park. I kept a fairly steady pace going up the grade to Deer Springs, not letting my speed drop below 10 mph; even though I felt tired, my legs were in good shape. Started feeling more tired through Escondido, but luckily it was generally downhill. Finished strong, with no muscle cramping and just some leg tiredness at the end.

7-29-09 Ride

Ride from home over the the Park n Ride off Via Rancho Pkwy, where I met Joe. We rode Del Lago/Beethoven to Bear Valley Pkwy, turned left, then right onto San Pasqual Rd. Followed this to Old Milky Way, took a right, and connected up to the 78. Up to this point in the ride and heading east, we had a favoring tailwind, and it really helped us push the pace on the 78. Motored out to Bandy Canyon Rd, then started riding into the wind, which wasn't quite as fun. The climb up Bandy Canyon was tough (particularly the first part as the grade really ramps up), but I made it okay and rode down to ride the last third or so with Joe. Headed over to Highland Valley Rd and down to Pomerado, where we took a left and rode up to Rancho Bernardo Rd. Joe was slowing up by this time, so we took it easy. Right, then over to W. Bernardo Dr, where we headed to Duenda and parted ways. Felt strong really all the way through the ride, although my pace was slower than usual.

Ride to yoga at church from home, using the same route as on 3-24-09. There was, as usual, a tailwind that helped my pace. Even still, I felt strong throughout the ride and really kept up the pace. It was idea weather for riding, not too hot or too cool.

7-26-09 Ride

Ride from home over to Dave's house for the Sunday morning time trial loop. It wasn't all that hot, but it was very muggy. We started at a not very fast pace and gradually increased it as Dave warmed up. He and I stayed together all the way up to Poway High School, then he separated a little ahead of me on the downhill to Twin Peaks. I caught and passed him on the uphill to Poway Rd, then we went fairly fast down Poway Rd, trading leads. I separated from him just before Sabre Springs Pkwy and made a little time going up to the Ted Williams Pkwy junction. For the rest of the ride, we stayed together, trading leads. Felt good throughout. Riding time of 52:38. As far as I can tell, this is a new PB.

7-25-09 Ride

Ride from home with Dave, starting up Matinal to Rancho Bernardo Rd, then out Camino del Sur to San Dieguito Rd. Up El Camino Real to the 56 bike path, which we took all the way back to Rancho Carmel Dr, and from there to Carmel Mountain Rd. Back behind the Home Depot, then home via Camino del Norte, Bernardo Center Dr, and W Bernardo Dr. Dave had missed the last week of riding, but you really couldn't tell it at the start. He stayed right there and even led up the hill on El Camino Real until the top. A little bit of separation of the bike path, particularly on that long, gradual uphill stretch by Black Mountain Rd. From there, we pretty much stayed together, although there was a little bit of separation going up Camino del Norte. Finished feeling pretty good, no cramping and little soreness, just tired muscles.

7-18-09 Ride

Solo ride from home up toward Julian. We were going up to pick up Emily from camp, so I took the opportunity to ride up as far as I could get. Started early, but the weather was warm and got warmer. Okay through the San Pasqual Valley, then up to Ramona on the 78. It seemed that I used the lowest gear a lot more than past rides up this grade, but I didn't feel any ill effects. Got into Ramona at 1:13 riding time, again feeling okay. Refilled my water bottle with energy drink and headed up to Santa Ysabel via the Old Julian Highway route. This part of the route was decent. I stopped around the 25 mile mark and had a hammer gel packet. A long climb portion came just after this point. I took my time on the way into Santa Ysabel and didn't feel bad, just hot. I stopped for a bit in Santa Ysabel, and it was toasty! Got there in around 2:25 riding time. I was sweating pretty good. Heading up the 78 out of Santa Ysabel, I started to feel some tightness in my quads. I thought I would take it easy and not push it, just try to get as far as I could. I think the hammer gel kicked in about this time, because I had a good stretch of slow, steady riding up the grade into Wynola. Felt good enough to continue, but I started slowing down more and really feeling it in my quads. Kept going as far as I could and ended up about 3 miles outside Julian before my quads shut down. I recovered fairly quickly (legs okay within about an hour), but it felt good to catch a ride with Ann the rest of the way into Julian and on to Camp Cedar Glen.

7-12-09 Ride

Time trial loop with Dave, rode over from my house. Dave had ridden an extra ~40 miles on Saturday afternoon, but he rode really strongly on the loop. I stayed with him until the climb up to Poway Rd, where he put a little separation on me. On Poway Rd, I was really struggling to keep up with him, and I couldn't set the pace for very long before he would pass me. On Sabre Springs Pkwy, I caught him and slightly outpaced him up to Ted Williams, then up Ted Williams, where he caught me and showed the strong training legs on the last stretch up and down Pomerado. I hung with him almost to the hospital, then he left me in the dust. More training rides needed on my part to catch up with him. Finished in ~54:50, estimated from Dave's time and the gap he put on me.

7-11-09 Ride

Ride with Dave. Started from my house and rode over to his place, then we headed up Pomerado to Scripps Poway Pkwy, then west until Black Mountain, where we took a right. On this long, gradual climb up Black Mountain, Dave lagged back somewhat, even though he was obviously in better riding shape than me. We turned left on Carmel Valley Rd, and Dave popped a couple of pain relievers to help a migraine he was getting. Turned on Camino del Sur, and I slowed down to keep with him. Followed this road to Camino del Norte, and Dave was feeling better by this time. Stayed on it until it turned into Twin Peaks, then took a left on Pomerado and headed back to Dave's house. I felt okay throughout the ride, just not in prime shape. I was glad I had requested a shorter ride, so I wouldn't feel so wiped out in the latter parts. Made it home okay, albeit fairly slowly.

7-8-09 Ride

Solo ride from home after work, up West Bernardo to Bernardo Center and Camino del Norte. Took this to Carmel Mountain Rd and headed over to Ted Williams Pkwy. Up Ted Williams to Pomerado, then all the way down to cross the freeway and get home by the normal route coming on West Bernardo from the north. Hadn't ridden in awhile, since I missed a couple of weekends associated with the SSP trip. Felt okay, just not really strong. The wind seemed to shift in my favor throughout the ride, which was good.

Average speed = 17.4 mph. Total mileage = 16.4 mi.

5-30-09 Ride

Ride with Dave from his house. Started from home and attempted to ride most of the Old Pros Fourth or July ride. Up Pomerado and down to Scripps Ranch, which we took over to Mira Mesa Blvd. Right on Camino Ruiz, then left on Calle Crisobal, which turns into Sorrento Valley Blvd. Over to El Camino Real, then onto San Dieguito Rd, where another guy was riding, which caused Dave to kick it up a notch. It was tough hanging with him during this section, until we outpaced the other guy and he slowed down. To El Apajo, which connects into Via de la Valle and Del Dios. Up Del Dios, by which time it had stopped misting/drizzling. Up until that part, the ride was really wet and dirty. From Del Dios, back the normal way to Dave's house, then home via RB Rd and West Bernardo Dr. I was pretty wiped out at the end of this ride, as I hadn't ridden this distance since the Alpine ride. Didn't feel any muscle cramping and recovered quickly.
Average speed = 17.3 mph. Total mileage = 54 mi.

5-23-09 Ride

Solo ride while up at Fellowship Camp in Wrightwood. Head out west on the Angeles Crest Highway and climbed from 5900' in Wrightwood to 7550' at the summit, about 7 miles away. Went a little further, then turned around and headed back. Felt pretty good, although the 7 miles of steady climbing was a challenge. I think I was going slightly into the wind, because the ride back up to the summit was much easier. Ride down into Wrightwood was a blast, but it was a chore climbing the 11% grade back up Elm to camp.

5-22-09 Ride

Ride while staying at the Motel 6 near Coalinga. Got up fairly early and rode the 198 into Coalinga and into the hills beyond. It was fairly windy, and I was surprised at the nature of the initial climb up to where the 198 and the 33 meet. Kept a fairly steady pace through the rolling hills of this ride. Not much to see in Coalinga, although they were getting ready for the Horned Toad Days. Rode beyond town on the 198 up into the western hills, then turned around and headed back. Back at the 198/33 junction, I caught the smell of the cattle feed lot located about 8 miles away. Pretty awful.

5-16-09 Ride

Ride over to Dave's house, then up Pomerado to Ted Williams Pkwy, which we took to the bike path and all the way down to El Camino Real. Over to San Dieguito, then up through Fairbanks Ranch, where we caught up with some of the San Diego Century riders. We rode along the same route on Camino del Sur/Norte all the way to Pomerado, where we headed back to Dave's house. Dave had a flat on San Dieguito, and his foot had been bothering him. I couldn't tell from his riding. He hung on nearly the entire way, even on the climb out of Fairbanks Ranch. I was tired toward the end of the ride but no obvious leg cramping.

5-9-09 Ride

Ride from home over to Dave's, where I found out he wasn't riding (injured foot), so I headed up Pomerado to the top, then right on Cypress Canyon and another right on Angelique. Over to Scripps-Poway Pkwy, then down to Mercy Rd and over to Black Mountain Rd. I guess it had been awhile since I went this way, because I had forgotten how much uphill there was, which was pretty much all the way to Carmel Valley Rd. Took a left there, then a right on Camino del Sur and back to Rancho Bernardo Rd. Down to West Bernardo Dr, then home via Duenda. The weather was foggy and somewhat cool. I don't know whether my rear brake was rubbing or not, but my pace was really slow.

5-5-09 Ride

Ride to yoga from home, using the same route as on 3-24-09. I took it a little easier and thus rode slower. A tailwind helped. It's starting to get warmer during my rides.

5-3-09 Ride

Ride from home over to Dave's for the time trial loop. Weather was perfect at the beginning and end but a tad warm on the little climb up to Poway Rd. We stayed pretty much together until this climb, and Dave really pushed the pace on the Poway Rd section. I could hang with him in the lead but couldn't push the pace at all when I was leading. I took off around Sabre Springs and put a little distance in, then a little more on Ted Williams. I was close to a PB pace and pushed in going down Pomerado. Turned on Rios and then made a wrong turn trying to get to Dave's house. Finished in 53:18.
Total mileage = 23.1 mi.

5-2-09 Ride

Ride with Dave from home out BVP to Citrus, then up to El Norte and down to Broadway. Out Jesmond Dene to Deer Springs/Twin Oaks Valley Pkwy, then right on Borden and over Los Posas. Right, then left on Discovery and right on Craven to near CSUSM. Back to Mission via Barham, then right on Auto Pkwy and another right on E Valley Pkwy. Over to Via Rancho Pkwy, then home the normal route. Early in the ride, Dave was very strong, hanging on in the uphills and pushing the pace on flats and downhills. He tired getting up Jesmond Dene and had more trouble keeping the pace on the rest of the uphills. After the ride, we realized that, even though the course didn't have any significant climbs, it did have a lot of ups and downs. We rode a very fast pace throughout the ride.

Solo ride from home after work, longer loop up Pomerado to Ted Williams and back via Rancho Carmel and Carmel Mountain. Felt really good motoring up Pomerado. 2009 Alpine Challenge Metric Century

2009 Alpine Challenge Ride. Dave and I did the 60-mile route. Weather was fairly cool at the start, and my teeth were chattering. After I registered, I was standing right by Andy Hampsten. Got started, leaving from the Viejas Outlet Mall and heading east up the hill to the overpass. Then it was largely downhill for the next 14 miles or so. Dave was feeling strong at the start, while I was pacing myself, knowing what was to come. We started climbing at mile 15 and kept it up pretty much until mile 35, which was the turnaround point. Got a little bit of rain, but it felt nice when the sun came out. Whenever we stopped, I cooled down pretty quickly. At the 35-mile sag stop, it was getting chilly (it's around 3600') and really windy. I was afraid that we would have to fight the wind all the way back, but it wasn't too bad. Around this time, my hamstrings started twitching, starting with the right one. I just kept pedaling and tried to stay in low gears to keep my legs moving. It was windy in spots but the wind helped somewhat in others. The last 15 miles or so were gradually uphill, but the grade seemed steeper than it really was, since my legs were so tired. Again, I just kept pedaling. Quads were sore but not too bad and not really cramping. The last little climb by the Willows Rd overpass was short and painful. It was flat to downhill from there to the finish, and the weather at the finish was very nice, sunny and cool. Legs were sore at the end but I recovered fairly quickly. I made a dramatic improvement in my average speed from 3 years ago, when I last rode this ride. Went from 14.6 mph to 16.0 mph! Just goes to show what training and a higher level of competition will do.
Average speed = 16.0 mph. Total mileage = 58.8 mi.

4-19-09 Ride

Ride from home over to Dave's house for the morning time trial loop. The weather was just right, with only a long-sleeved jersey needed. Kept pretty much with Dave, except for the short climb up Espola and the section from Sabre Springs and over Ted Williams. Finished in 54:53, probably from tired legs from the previous day's ride.
Total mileage = 23.1 mph.

4-18-09 Ride

Rode over to Dave's house, then down Pomerado to Highland Valley.Up the short, steep section, then we headed over Bandy Canyon to the 78. Up this to Ramona, where we headed south on the 67 all the way down the Lakeside grade, then back up and over to Scripps Poway Pkwy. Down to Pomerado, then back to Dave's house, after which I headed home. Throughout the ride, the wind pretty much cooperated with us. It was starting to get hot near the end. I was tired on the last stretch up Pomerado, but not sore at all. Even on the final small climbs back home, I didn't feel any cramps in my quads, which is a good sign for next week's ride.

4-15-09 Ride

Solo ride from home after work down to Rancho Santa Fe and back, via the Del Dios route. It was cool and breezy, even windy. The wind was coming from the southwest, so it was blowing in my face nearly the entire way down to RSF. Even on the downhills, I was generally having to pedal. Calves were tight throughout the ride, perhaps because of all of the sitting during the day. On the way back, the wind pushed me nearly all the way, and I really motored along Del Dios and Via Rancho. Felt good at the end, fairly strong. I ended up traveling much faster on the way back than on the way down.
Average speed = 17.9 mph. Total mileage = 29.4 mi.

4/11/09 Ride

Solo ride from home, same route as 1-17-09. Felt kind of sluggish throughout the ride. It was cool but dry at the start. Most of the first half of the ride was generally into the wind, which helped on the Miramar/Pomerado stretch. By RB Rd, it started to mist up, and the rain generally became more intense until, by the time I was riding by the park, it was going pretty steady. Glad to be done, and felt good after the ride, not wiped out. Ride is actually a little longer than MapMyRide indicates, since the bike trail portion by the 56 is a little windier.
Average speed = 17.3 mph. Total mileage = 47.0 mi.

Solo ride from home out by RB Park, up Pomerado to Ted Williams Pkwy, right on Rancho Carmel, and then right on Carmel Mountain Rd. 4-4-09 Ride

Ride with Dave in the afternoon after waiting in line for tickets at Humphreys and doing some gardening. I felt pretty good, but Dave was slow from the start. He had apparently had a pretty big lunch and was slowed down by it. Went out Centre City to Mission, then up to Las Posas and over to San Marcos Blvd. Down Palomar Airport Rd to El Camino Real, then over to Encinitas Blvd. Back up through Rancho Santa Fe and onto Del Dios, which we took back Via Rancho. I really flew up Del Dios, with a fairly steady tailwind and a relatively light pace up to that point, to hang with Dave. We went up Pomerado to RB Rd to get to his house sooner, and I'm guessing he was glad to be done with this ride.

3-29-09 Ride

Ride from home over to Dave's house for the morning time trial loop. The weather was just about right, perhaps a little too cool for riding in shorts and a short-sleeve shirt. Didn't really push it up Espola, just kept with Dave at a fairly steady pace. Got ahead of him on the final climb up to Poway Rd, then we rode together down to Sabre Springs Pkwy. Up this gradual hill, I got ahead of him again and thought I had a chance for a new PB. Pushed it harder up Ted Williams. When I made the turn onto Pomerado, I didn't have a the strong push left in my legs to end on a strong note. Finished in 53:23, and I was pretty wiped out at the end. There is hope to set a new PB, but I need to ride hard and steady to build up my short-term endurance.

3-28-09 Ride

Ride with Dave from his house. I rode over, met him there, and we rode up Pomerado to Poway Rd, which we took up to the 67. It was cool at the start, and I had my jacket and full-finger gloves. By the time I got to the top of the hill before the 67, my jacket was off and I had switched to the regular gloves. We went toward Ramona, then around via Dye Rd, Warnock, and San Vicente. Down into the San Pasqual Valley via the 78, and this is a long, steady downhill. Back out via Bandy Canyon, and I was kinda slow going up. No pain (yet), but it was a slog. Back via Highland Valley to Pomerado, where we turned right and rode back W Bernardo Dr up to Duenda. Here is where my quads told me it was time to stop. I turned off at Duenda and headed home, glad to be done. I am able to outpace Dave early in the rides, particularly on longer hills, but he has greater stamina and can stay with me more easily the longer the ride is.

3-24-09 Ride

Ride from home to church for yoga, using the BVP route and Oak Hill to Ash. Weather was just about right, cool but not chilly. The Oak Hill part avoids the short, steep hill on Grand, but it's perhaps just a little longer. Got to the church via Grand, Juniper, and Fourth. Calves were a little tight at the end, and my right cleat seemed loose in the pedal.

3-15-09 Ride

Ride from home over to Dave's house for the morning time trial loop. It was a little misty on the way over but nice during all of the ride. Didn't push it too hard, just steady pace throughout. I had tightened up the nuts in my headset, and that significantly reduced the flex of my front fork and gave me more downhill coasting speed. Finished in 53:28 and could have ridden harder.

3-14-09 Ride

Ride from home with Dave, who rode over from his house. It was cloudy and cool, though not really cold, the entire ride. Out Via Rancho Pkwy to Del Dios, then all the way down to Solana Beach, where we turned around and rode back up the same way. Dave kept up all the way down and really pushed the pace after we went through Rancho Santa Fe. On the early stages of the climb back up, I would put a little separation between us, but he would catch up on the flats. On the Del Dios climb, there weren't enough recovery points for him to catch up, so I put some time on him there. Otherwise, he was right with me the entire way.

3-8-09 Ride

Time trial loop, starting from Dave's house. It was just lightening up at 7:00 when we started, due to the time change. Dave and John were there. I was pretty stiff from the previous day's ride, and I had vowed not to push the pace. Kept with Dave and John up Espola, with some separation by the high school. Some more separation going up the short grade to Poway Rd. Down Poway, all three staying together and trading leads. Again, a little separation going up Sabre Springs Pkwy, but I wasn't really pushing it, just maintaining a steady pace. Moderate push from there back to Dave's. Finished in 56:08.

3-7-09 Ride

Ride with Dave. I rode from my house over to his house, and we took off north on Pomerado. Over to Highland Valley, then up, up, up to the highest part of the climb. I felt good throughout this part of the ride, with a nice steady pace uphill for the most part. Back downhill to Pomerado, then south all the way to the highest point on Pomerado. The 1-mile climb was, again, not bad at all. I did maintain a steady pace going up this short grade. Back downhill, then right on Scripps-Poway Pkwy and up this hill, all the way to the 67. I was worried about the 1.7-mile climb near the end, but again I was able to stay on a steady pace all the way up, with no real struggles. I think it helped that we had a mild tailwind. Back down to Pomerado, where I was starting to get tired. We took a fairly easy pace back to Dave's house, and I couldn't push it. Rode home from Dave's, again feeling tired but not really sore.

Ride from home over to Dave's for the time trial loop. The weather was cool but not cold, and I was feeling good. Dave, Jim, and John were all there. I set a pretty fast tempo right from the start and pushed it all the way up to the top of Espola. Raced down Poway Rd and turned onto Sabre Springs Pkwy. Went up to Ted Williams and knew from my time that I had a shot at a record pace. Pushed hard all the way back, and Dave and John helped with a strong pace up to the hospital. Finished in 52:58, a new personal best.

2-28-09 Ride

Solo ride from home out through Escondido and Centre City Pkwy out to Old Castle Rd. Headed out this road to Lilac Rd and took it to Valley Center Rd. Headed south and turned left on Woods Valley, then headed back up to Lake Wohlford Rd. Back through the village and down the grade. This is a great, long downhill with little braking needed. Back Valley Pkwy to Bear Valley Pkwy, then home the normal route. Felt pretty good throughout the ride, although the middle part, from Old Castle to Lake Wohlford, seemed like it was almost entirely uphill.

2-22-09 Rides

Morning time trial loop with Dave, starting and ending at home. It sprinkled a little bit right at the start of the ride, but the rain never came. Weather was cloudy and fairly cool all day. On the ride, Dave was feeling under the weather, so I kept pace with him the entire time, except for a couple of uphill sections. Sometime during the ride, my right cleat lost a screw, and I couldn't release my shoe from the pedal. This slowed me down somewhat. Finished the ride in 56:20, with no place where I really pushed the pace.
Total mileage = 23.1 mi.

This was the day of the RB-to-Escondido stage of the Amgen Tour of California. I repaired my cleat when I got home then rode over to the start area by Von's. It was interesting, but I couldn't stay long enough to see any of the riders.

Drove over to the Von's by Joe's house, then we met up and rode up El Norte to Valley Pkwy and up Lake Wohlford Rd to watch the riders come through. It was a really fun scene, with a lot of cyclists and other watchers hanging out to enjoy the spectacle. When the riders came by, I took some pictures and was amazed at how fast they were going up that hill. Joe and I then rode back down Valley Pkwy to downtown Escondido and walked through the crowds around the finish line, watching the race in progress on an outdoor screen. I rode home after awhile, then picked up my car later on from the Von's parking lot.

2-21-09 Ride

Ride with Dave (John still recovering from a sinus cold that knocked him out for the week). We left from home, took a quick ride up to Jim's to see if he was riding (no), then headed out by the park to Highland Valley Rd and up all the way to the 67, then we turned around and headed back. I was feeling okay, although the really steep parts of the climb on the way out were tough. Felt really strong on the way back, perhaps we had a small tailwind. Dave was battling a runny nose and probably the onset of a cold, so he lagged behind on the climbs.

Solo ride from home after work on the short loop out to Pomerado/Twin Peaks and back. Felt okay, although I sensed that my heartrate was higher than normal. A little slower than I would have liked on the climb up Twin Peaks to I-15, but otherwise it was a good ride. Some cramping in my calves and feet after the ride but nothing painful.

2-14-09 Ride - Tour de Palm Springs

Drove in the morning to Palm Springs, picking up Joe at his house on the way. We got a little lost around San Jacinto, but we quickly got back on the right route. Arrived about 30 min before the ride and picked up our wristbands. Met up with John, who was staying in Palm Springs with May. The crowd of riders leaving at the same time as us was big, so it wasn't until ~8:15 before we started. The first few miles were slow, as we navigated through all of the slower riders. When we made the turn out by the windmills, it was into the teeth of a pretty strong wind and gradually uphill. This part of the ride was the most strenuous, but it wasn't too bad. Passing all other riders. Got up to the top of the climb and waited for John and Joe to catch up. The rest of the ride was a mix of downhill and minor climbs. We stopped at each of the sag stops to reconnect, as well as at a couple of other intersections. After the initial climb section, John and rode together the rest of the way, although at the very end, he had a lot more gas in the tank than I did, and he separated from me a little bit. Finished the ride in 2:58:40, and, boy, was I glad to be done. No soreness, just lack of drive in my quads. Joe was slower, but he finished in great shape and was really glad that he did the ride. Had lunch at a small Thai restaurant, then Joe and I drove back home. I made a couple of wrong turns but no great problems. I think I was just really tired. Overall, it was a very good day, with just a little difficulty at the very end. Average speed = 18.9 mph. Total mileage = 56.5 mi. http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/ca/palm-springs/837411655551

2-7-09 Ride

Ride with John Hellgeth, John, and Dave. Started from home and rode over to Dave's to meet the others. It was raining fairly steadily on the way over, with a couple of heavier spots. It was clear at Dave's, and we headed down Pomerado to Poway Rd. Felt decent early in the ride. Turned onto Poway and went over to the 56 bike trail. Going up the hill at Rancho Penasquitos, I was working hard. Got onto the bike trail, where it was wet but not really raining. On the slight downhill sections, I couldn't keep up with John and Dave, and my heartrate was higher than normal. Toward the end of the bike trail, John Hellgeth fell coming around a bend in the trail and scraped up his knee pretty badly. We stopped at an AM/PM for a first aid break, then we headed up El Camino Real, taking it nice and slow. Up to Del Mar Heights, then over to Carmel Valley Rd, which we followed all the way to Bernardo Center Dr. John and Dave rode ahead, and I hung back with John Hellgeth to make sure he was okay. We went Lomica over to Higa Pl, then back to Dave's house. I went home via Pomerado Rd by the park. Was able to motor up the short hill just beyond the freeway at a pretty fast clip. Finished feeling good, but I had taken it easy, particularly in the latter half of the ride.
Average speed = 15.5 mph. Total mileage = 39.4 mi

2-1-09 Ride

Ride from home over to Dave's house, then the time trial loop with Dave and John. I started out at a brisk but not too rapid pace, then Dave and I traded leads up Espola until the turn south, when he fell back. The weather was pretty good, maybe a little cold. Fast on Poway Rd, and I started fast on Sabre Springs but faded just before Ted Williams Pkwy. Steady pace up TW. On Pomerado, I started fast but not too fast, then really tried to push it after passing the hospital. There was a headwind, which slowed me down somewhat. Total time for the time trial loop was 54:54, which was ~1 min off my fastest time.
Total mileage = 23 mi.

1-31-09 Ride

Ride with Dave and John from John's house out to Scripps-Poway Pkwy and up to the 67. It was cool at the start but not cold. Going down the 67 toward Lakeside, I lost a glove, but John saw it and retrieved it. Around Vigilante/Moreno to Willow, then a short stretch back on the 67 to the Lakeside Ave turnoff, where we followed Lakeside and Riverside to El Nopal, then over to Mast via Los Ranchitos. Out Mast until we connected over to Mission Gorge, which we took all the way over to Qualcomm Stadium. The climb up Mission Gorge wasn't bad at all. Riding north on Mission Village Dr by the stadium was really steep, particularly at the start. It was short but pretty tough. Turned on Ruffin, and followed this road to Aero Dr, then back on to Ruffin, which we took all the way back to Miramar Rd. Up Pomerado to the crest, then back via Cypress Canyon Park Dr and Angelique. Somewher on Kearny Mesa, I think I got a slow leak in my front tire, and it was getting pretty low by the top of Pomerado. Was able to make it back to John's house.
Average speed = 17.1 mph. Total mileage = 44 mi.

1-25-09 Ride

Solo ride starting from church and heading out Grand to BVP, then over to East Valley Pkwy. Went over to Lake Wohlford Rd, then up this road, following it by Valley View Casino to Valley Center Rd. Down Valley Center Rd to Lilac Rd, which I took. I intended to follow this road and cross over I-15 using the big bridge, but I missed the turn, which I think was at West Lilac Rd. I ended up going toward Pala Casino. By the time I realized that I had missed my turn, it was really too late to turn back, so I gritted my teeth and kept heading toward Pala. The last stretch of Lilac Rd was really sketchy, as was a little piece of packed dirt road that I used to get over to the 76. Once on the 76, I headed west, and that 5 miles of road seemed a lot longer. Got onto old 395 and climbed slowly up, by the bridge, then back down by Gopher Canyon and Lawrence Welk Village. I was looking for some kind of quick mart to get something to eat but couldn't find one. Climbed up, again slowly, to Deer Springs, then made my way back through Escondido and home. At the very end, my legs were starting to complain. After I got home, I couldn't stand for very long without having to sit down and rest my legs. Recovery was still pretty quick.
Average speed = 16.1 mph. Total mileage = 58 mi.

1-17-09 Ride

Solo ride from home out Azucar to Matinal and up to RB Rd. Out to Camino del Sur and over to the 56 bike path, which I took down to El Camino Real, then over Carmel Valley Rd to the coast. South on PCH and up the inside route of Torrey Pines. Out and over Genesee to Eastgate Mall, which I took to Miramar Rd. Up this to Pomerado, then all the way down to I-15 and back via RB Community Park. I felt a lot better on this ride than the last time I had ridden it, with Dave.
Average speed = 17.6 mph. Total mileage = 47 mi.

1-4-09 Ride

Ride, starting at noon, with John and Dave from my house. Out around the east side of Escondido, BVP to Citrus/El Norte to Broadway. Over Country Club/Borden to Mulberry, then Mission. To Rancho Santa Fe Rd, then out San Marcos/Palomar Airport to just before El Camino Real, where we turned around and headed back to RSF Rd. Down this road to San Elijo Rd, which we took into San Elijo Hills and connected up to Elfin Forest. Back to Escondido this way. This route is actually quite scenic and not hilly. Uphills are generally gradual. Elfin Forest to Hale, then to 9th by the Home Depot. Back via Valley Parkway to Via Rancho and over to Pomerado. Up to Dave’s house for a breather (John was looking tired), then continuing up Espola to Twin Peaks, where we turned and headed back toward Pomerado. Last gradual climb up to Pomerado, then sped down to the turn-off for Dave’s. I went home solo, taking RB Rd. and Bernardo Center/Duenda. Felt good all the way through the ride, no soreness or tightening of muscles. Cycle computer said 62.7 mi and 17.3 mph, route read as 62.1 mi. Calculated calorie burn of 2817.

1-3-09 Ride

Ride in the morning from home with Dave. Up Aguamiel to see if Jim was going to ride (no). It had rained in the night and the streets were wet, but it wasn’t raining when we started. Down and over Duenda/Poblado to Matinal, then up to RB Rd, which we took to Camino del Sur. Down this to Carmel Valley Rd, right and over to Del Mar Heights Rd. Took this to El Camino Real, then over to Via de la Valle. Here is when it started to sprinkle on us, off and on for the rest of the ride. Up Via del la Valle to Paseo Delicias/Del Dios, which we took up. It was the first time riding this way for Dave. Felt good on the climb, although I was soaked and extremely dirty. Continued to Valley Pkwy, which we took over to Centre City. Around here, I noticed that my rear tire was low, had a slow leak. Back via normal route, although the flat tire slowed me down. Got home and fixed it that evening, also switched front and rear tires and mended a couple of inner tubes. Average speed was 17.4 mph, and total distance was 39.5 mi, according to route map.
