05-12-2024 Entry

Got up (<>) and had some breakfast and chilled before we headed up into the Berkeley hills to go on a hike. While Laura made the brioche French toast, I rode her Peloton for about 25 minutes, following a pre-recorded workout. It was a little challenging, but the manual adjustment of the resistance on the bike was smooth, and it kept track of power output. I worked up a pretty good sweat on this short workout, then breakfast was ready. French toast and fresh strawberries and cherries, with good coffee. Later, Laura drove us up to Inspiration Point, where we parked and headed out on a paved trail, winding through some trees and meadows. A little less than a mile and a half in, Ann tripped and fell down. She banged and scraped up her knee, but thankfully she was able to walk, albeit slowly, back to the car. So that's where we turned around and headed back. When we got back to the car, Laura drove us to her apartment, where we relaxed in the afternoon. I called Mom and talked to her for about 25 minutes, she was in a pretty good mood. Water in the lake has receded, leaving a lot of debris in the yard that will need to be cleared out. Jean Lancaster is still in the hospital battling an infection, hoping to be discharged soon. We went to a restaurant serving Latin American food for an early dinner, food was decent, and the hot sauce I requested was pretty fiery. In the evening, we watched a documentary, The Contestant, about this guy in Japan who ended up being isolated in a room by himself for a year and three months, relying on entering and winning prizes from magazine and radio contests. This guy, who was an aspiring comedian, was quite challenged mentally by the experience. After it was over, he struggled with his celebrity, ultimately finding a purpose in helping others in disaster relief and climbing Mt Everest as part of his publicity efforts related to the Fukushima disaster relief fundraising. Ann was restless in the night as she had trouble getting into a comfortable sleeping position.
