Was originally going to ride in the morning with Jim, but it was raining when I woke up and it stayed rainy until 7:30 or so. So we canceled the ride. Instead, I ended up walking over to the WWC and playing basketball in the gym for a while. Had some moments where my shot was working, but there is still a lot of rust to shake off. Then I walked home. When I got there, the day was nice and the sun was just peeking out, so I went in the backyard and ended up pretty much finishing weeding the second bed. With the wet ground it was easier to pull the weeds, but I probably lost more soil clinging to them. There is still a little bit to do to turn over the soil in the last portion of the bed and pull out some low-lying weeds, then it will be time to lay down the ground cover. Ann is going to help. In the afternoon, we drove up to The Succulent Cellar vineyard, which is off Highland Valley Rd by Eagle Crest Dr. It's owned by Josh and Michelle Mann, they bought a 33-acre avocado grove in about 2015. Most of the avocado trees had died because the previous owners stopped watering them. They have planted two vineyard plots, one for white wine grapes and the other for reds. We had a tasting, and the wines were surprisingly good, given that they haven't been in the business too long. Josh is the winemaker, and Michelle is the business leader. We ended up buying a bottle of one of the white wines, and it was a nice afternoon, although their tasting area is up on a hill and it was windy and chilly when the sun went behind the clouds. Still, a fun outing. Light dinner after that, and a quiet evening at home.
I finished Confidence Man, by Maggie Haberman. How Trump got to be president, I am still struggling to understand. He's a bully in public and, occasionally, in private. Won't stand being contradicted. Doesn't understand global affairs. There is a segment of of American culture that I just don't relate to. I went back to plugging away at Energy and Civilization, by Vaclav Smil.
