This was a Zone 1-2 ride for me, for the most part. After I got up (<>), I got ready for the ride and added a little bit to the distance by riding through the neighborhood to Matinal Rd, turning left, then left again onto Cabela Dr. Used Luz Ct to get to Duenda Rd, then over to Jim's house, where he was waiting. John showed up a little afterward, then Dave rolled in, riding up that nasty little climb on Aguamiel Rd. He had ridden from his place. He let us know of his plans to move back to Pennsylvania near the end of the summer, to live with his mom for a bit and figure out a longer-term plan for where he wants to be. We headed back over to Duenda Rd and took it down to W Bernardo Dr, turning left and riding downhill and over to Pomerado Rd. Then it was the gentle climb up to RB Rd, where we turned left and the average grade increased a little bit. Up to Bridlewood Rd, turning right there. On the little climb just past the turn, Jim broke his chain. I got out ahead and ended up circling back when they didn't show up, to find out what was going on. I sat and talked to Dave about his decision and some of the reasons for it while John and Jim tried to repair Jim's chain. No luck there eventually, so Jim told us to go on and called Krista to come pick him up. We continued to Summer Sage Rd, turning right and taking it, at slow pace, back over to Espola Rd. Right there, finishing the gradual climb up to the high school and then taking the descent to Twin Peaks Rd, where we turned right. We stayed on it until Pomerado Rd, where we turned right and headed back to RB Rd. Left there, then up to Olmeda Way, where we turned right and then right again on Capilla Rd. To Poblado Rd, turning left and riding back to Matinal Rd, where we turned right and rode back to Jim's house the same way I had ridden there at the start. We actually beat Jim back to his house by about 5 minutes, but he was nice enough to make smoothies for the four of us, and we chatted a while before splitting up. Home the normal way for me from there.

After I got home, I had some cereal and a cup of coffee, relaxed for a bit, then headed out into the backyard for more weeding by the far side gate. It took a lot longer than I expected, about 2 hours, but I got it done. I had some lunch while Ann was talking to Christine about getting together in the fall, and took another little break before going back out and laying down wood chips in the area I had just cleared of weeds. I hope they help to keep the weeds from coming back as densely, even though I didn't lay down ground cloth. In the late afternoon, I drove over to Rob's place and met Juliette's boyfriend Suheil before we drove over to Poway's Irish Pub for a beer and conversation. He is still recovering, feeling some pain and moving gingerly. He was out in the road when he hit a gap in the pavement by a manhole cover and went down on Pomerado Rd. Luckily, no cars were close enough to hit him. He's down about the HP site closure but described the actions as inevitable, given the very low occupancy of the two buildings. Rob also offered to lend me some backpack camping gear for the trip in July, so I can determine if it's for me before making a bigger investment. Drove home after that and had a quiet evening.
