05-04-2024 Ride

Got up in the night and had some cereal and a banana, so I didn't eat breakfast when I woke up later. Got ready for the Bisikleta ride, including loading in the proposed route for the day. It was misty when I left the house, so I turned around and went back to get my jacket. Then I rode through the neighborhood to RB Rd and took the straight shot to the starting point, since I was likely the only board member to be there early. When I got there, Eric was circling around and stopped, as he wasn't sure he had the right starting location. On this day, at the start, were: Eric, Charlie, Jamil, Jed, and Ryan Henderson. We headed on Camino del Sur to Lone Quail Rd, turning left and riding up to Dove Canyon Rd, where Gideon joined us. Then we headed down the hill and back up Carmel Valley Rd to Black Mountain Rd. I was in or near the front for almost the entire ride, Eric also rode strong, and Ryan was the strongest. We turned on Black Mountain Rd and took it over to the 56 bike path, where Arnold joined us. Then it was down the hill and left onto Mercy Rd to climb up to I-15 (set a PR here of 5:31, almost top 10 for my age group). Just past the freeway, we turned right onto Scripps Highland Dr and started climbing in earnest. This road was steeper than I remembered, and it didn't let up after we turned onto Trail Crest Dr. I was able to keep up with Ryan for a while, then he pulled away and I couldn't respond. I kept him in my sights ahead of me, and apparently he knew the route. We rode up to Winding Ridge Dr and kept climbing, although the grade was lower by then. At the top, Ryan and I waited for the others to catch up, then we turned right onto Farmingdale St to get over to Scripps Ranch Blvd. Left turn there, and then a right onto Spring Canyon Rd, where we had another, more gradual climb before we got to the top of Pomerado Rd (another PR for me, helped by trying to stay with Ryan). Gideon kept going on the downhill section, while we turned right onto Stonebridge Pkwy and rode up to the top. As soon as we made this turn, Ryan took off and I had no chance of either catching up or staying with him. So I settled in and took the first few littler climbs before tackling the last one, about 2 miles long. I was 4 seconds slower on the entire Stonebridge Pkwy section than my previous best. We gathered again at the top, this time with Gio (he ended up doing this climb 3x as well as the Pomerado Rd climb 2x!), then we headed down Via Santa Pradera to get to the top of Beeler Canyon Rd. As I've mentioned before, this descent is winding and super steep, and there's a gate at the bottom, so I rode my brakes the whole way down to the gate. It was a nice cruise from there back to Pomerado Rd via Creek Rd. We stopped at the gas station on the corner of Pomerado Rd and Scripps-Poway Pkwy, and it was a fairly brief rest stop before we continued on, minus Gio, who did some more climbing before riding home. Down Pomerado Rd to Metate Ln, then up to Community Rd, where we turned to get over to Twin Peaks Rd. Arnold split off from us at this point, and we turned right and headed up to Espola Rd. Left turn there, followed by the gradual climb up to the high school. I kept up with Ryan for most of it, but he had a little push at the end that I couldn't match (another PR for me on this climb of 5:34, thanks to Ryan). All gathered up at the top of this climb, then we enjoyed a fast descent to RB Rd and then down to Pomerado Rd. My legs were feeling the effects of the climbing on the last climb up RB Rd, but so were Ryan's. He sprinted out ahead of me after the light at Matinal Rd, and I couldn't catch him until he slowed down. Normal way back to the starting point from there. My legs held up well on this challenging, shorter route. On the way home, taking Camino del Norte to Camino San Bernardo and then over to RB Rd to get to W Bernardo Dr, I felt a little twinge in my right quad, but it didn't go anywhere, and I was not pushing a hard pace by that time. Still, I was glad to get home. Found out at the end that my Fitbit hadn't tracked my ride.

Ann had gone to La Jolla, so it was quiet at home when I got there. Generally quiet day and evening. <>
