05-30-2024 Swim/Ride

Got up (<>) and got ready to go to the WWC for a swim when it opened. Had a little breakfast before I went. At the start, Ken and Howard were there, and I talked to Howard a little bit about the HP site closure. It was pretty busy in the pool during the time I swam. Was able to complete the 2000 yd protocol in under 40 minutes for the first time in a while, but it took a consistent high effort to do it. When I got home, I had a little more food, then I went out into the front yard and used the hedge trimmer to shape the two bushes on either side of the garage. Got it completed, they look better. There is still a fair amount of hedge trimming that needs to be done out front, but we only have a limited space in our green waste bins before next week. I cleared some more space by cramming additional clippings into the large bin and emptying one of the wood chip cans into the area by the trash cans. Cleared that area out before dumping the wood chips in and spreading them out. It looks a little better now. Had a light lunch before heading over to Black Mountain Bicycles on my bike to buy some chain wax. I rode up Aguamiel Rd to Duenda Rd and took it over to Bernardo Center Dr, heading up to Bernardo Heights Pkwy, where I turned left and rode up the hill to get to Paseo Lucido. Right there and onto Carmel Mountain Dr, turning right onto Rancho Carmel Dr / Sabre Springs Pkwy, which I took down to Poway Rd. Then it was the bike trail on the west side of the freeway over to Erma Rd, then up to Scripps Ranch Blvd. Hibert St into the shopping center where the bike store was. Of course, my luck, they didn't carry it in the store, only available by special order. So the trip was for naught. I reversed my course and rode back toward home. Had a little bit of a tailwind helping me along at times. I was trying to stay in Zone 2 and low Zone 3, was mostly successful on the return trip, which didn't have many steep climbs. Home via RB Rd to W Bernardo Dr and then Duenda Rd. It was the first time in a while that I had ridden in the midday sun, and I could definitely tell that I had to work harder and that my heartrate was elevated because of the higher temperature.

Avg speed = 14.0 mph. Total mileage = 22.7 mi
Avg power = 124 W. Weighted avg power = 150 W
Total elevation gain = 1710'
Avg heartrate = 118 bpm (Coospo), 122 bpm (Fitbit)

Had a shower after I got home (low average speed = longer riding time), then Ann cut my hair, which was looking really wooly. I went over to Miguel's in the late afternoon to have Happy Hour with former Indigo colleagues, and here's who showed up: Minedys, Avi, Guangjin, Hongwei, Dan, Kyle, Andre, Evgeny, Mark, Blair, James, Bor-Jiunn, and Stan. It was a nice get-together, got to talk to Dan and Kyle about Knicks basketball, Mark about our respective families (Renee is still battling health issues), and Evgeny about driver assist on his Tesla. Beni is starting at SpaceX in the fall, should be an exciting ride. We were there about 3 hours, and it was an enjoyable evening. Not too much of a downer brought to the gathering about the HP site closure.
