05-07-2024 Swim/Ride

Got up and went for an hourlong walk through the neighborhood. It was a little chilly, nice walking weather. When I got back, I changed and then rode over to the WWC for a swim. Did the usual 2000 yd protocol, focused on keeping a steady stroke and at times pushing my limits. Finished in a little over 38 minutes, which was the fastest for me in a while for this distance. And at the end, it felt like a hard workout. I rode home and had breakfast, talked to Ann about which concerts to get $25 tickets for. So far, it's Pink in September and Postmodern Jukebox in August. After that, I put my repaired tube back in my tire and it held air just fine. I texted Avi to see if he was planning on riding, but didn't hear back until I had already decided to ride. I headed down by the park and then up Pomerado Rd until I got to Avenida la Valencia, where I turned left and rode up to its dead end. Then I turned around and got onto Bronco Ln, climbing a little more before descending on Silver Saddle Ln back to Avenida la Valencia. I took it down to Del Norte, turning left and doing some more climbing to get over to Stone Canyon Rd, where I turned right and headed back to Pomerado Rd. Left there, taking it to Poway Rd, where I turned left again and rode up to Community Rd, turning right there. This took me on a 1.2 mile climb up to the top, and I had a PR on the section from the beginning up to Scripps-Poway Pkwy (5:22 moving time, 6:12 overall). I stayed on Community Rd all the way until it ended in an industrial park, then turned around and rode back to Kirkham Rd to get over to Scripps-Poway Pkwy. Down the hill and back to Pomerado Rd, where the breeze on the downhill made things interesting. I turned left and climbed up to Stonebridge Pkwy, turning left there and having the benefit of a tailwind pushing me up. But it was pretty warm, the sun was out in full with no cloud cover. I didn't think I went too hard on this climb, but I ended up setting a PR, by 1 second, of 14:25. Probably the wind effect. I took a picture at the top, then rode back down, it was fun, not too fast, the three little climbs to get back were not fun though, even though they were relatively short. Once I got back to Pomerado Rd, I headed home the normal way, back to RB Rd and then home via Bernardo Center Dr and Duenda Rd. Again, I had a tailwind pushing me north, and I was grateful for it since I had compressed a fair amount of climbing in the first 20 miles.

I was tired when I got home, had a small lunch and ended up taking a short nap in the afternoon. Got a little more sun than I expected, and it made the left side of my face, where I'm applying the cream, irritated. In the afternoon, we drove over to Emily's office to meet her and Caleb for dinner and then a NEEDTOBREATHE concert at the Rady Shell. We ate at the Himalayan food restaurant near Emily's office. Afterward, Ann gave her the tote bag she made for her along with the $10k check to begin transferring some of our money to her. We got a little bit of a late start to head down to the Rady Shell and ran into traffic, including an incorrect course direction from Waze that cost us about 10 minutes. When we got downtown, there was a lot of traffic by the convention center, which slowed us further. So we weren't seated when the opening act, Judah & the Lion, started performing. I was frustrated from the drive and traffic, and it took me a bit to settle down. This artist was energetic, but their songs were fairly plain, nothing to encourage me to see them again. There was a break after their set to get the stage ready for the main act, so I hit the restroom and then chatted with the others. Our seats were fairly close but left of the stage, so the viewing and acoustics were just acceptable. The NEEDTOBREATHE act was really good, a mixture of song styles and some stories by Bear Rinehart. He is a fairly charismatic guy and a good band leader. As far as I can tell, below is their setlist. I'm glad I listened to them quite a bit in the weeks before the concert because I was familiar with nearly all of the songs.

  18. Encore:
We all enjoyed the concert, Caleb perhaps less so than the others. The section where the band members performed covers was a little hokey, but it gave Bear Rinehart time to go into the audience and walk through the crowd. He walked right by us near the end, but we didn't get to give him a high five. By the way, Caleb got a new used car, a 2017 Ford Focus. I hope it ends up working well for him. I was tired on the drive home, which included stopping by Emily's office to drop her and Caleb off. But we got out of the parking garage fairly quickly and didn't have traffic to contend with.
