05-11-2024 Run
Got up fairly early and went for a run. Since we were about 5° higher in latitude, it was light earlier. Was cool, good running weather. I headed up to San Pable Ave and then over to University Ave. Ran toward the campus, having to stop frequently for stop lights. I got to nearly 2 miles and then turned around to head back the same way. The way back was slightly downhill and faster. Was tiring out, even though I had chosen a 9-minute pace. I could feel a very mild discomfort in the top of my right foot, will skip running tomorrow and watch out for that. When I got back, Laura was up but not Ann. She got up not too long after. Laura found a hike for us to do in the Marin Highlands, but it was a 5-mile loop, and I was concerned that it would be too much for Ann. So she found a 4-mile out and back hike. Because there was an accident on the bridge up past Richmond, she drove us through San Francisco instead and across the Golden Gate Bridge. As soon as we made our approach to the bridge, the weather fogged in. It was that way when we got to the trailhead at Fort Baker, and it stayed that way the entire hike, so we didn't see much of the ocean. Up toward Hill 88, which was supposed to have a Nike missile battery. There was some fairly steep climbing at a couple of points, and it was almost all uphill. We saw some abandoned bunkers and a 16-inch gun barrel from the USS Missouri. We never did see any missiles, but we turned back when Ann said she was ready. The way down was slow as she picked her way through the steep sections, using an old light bulb replacement Polen she had picked up. We got back okay, I was really hungry. Laura drove us to Mill Valley to a place called the Junction (joke about Petticoat Junction) for pizza and salad. The traffic right by this little town was bad, and parking was a problem. But we made it there, and the pizza place was hopping. Lots of cyclists riding on these roads and at the restaurant. There was more traffic on the way home, both at the start and as we got near Berkeley. Along with the traffic we had to get through in San Francisco, it made for a less enjoyable ride for me. I forget how impatient I get in traffic, and Laura is the same. After we got back, I was tired and had a short nap. Then we drove over to the Berkeley Bowl to get stuff for brunch in the morning and for some dinner food for me. In the evening, after I ate, Laura and I watched Triangle of Sadness, a dark comedy about role reversal among the super rich and entitled. Ann started watching, but it wasn't her kind of movie. Not mine either, but I appreciated some of the points it made, along with its general ironic tone.
