05-06-2024 Ride

Ann got free San Diego Zoo tickets from Caleb, so we decided on this day to walk through the zoo. <> I rode my bike down there, leaving around 7:40. I rode through the neighborhood, then over RB Rd to Camino San Bernardo, taking it to get to Dove Canyon Rd. Down the hill, then right on Carmel Valley Rd, where I rode slowly through the traffic of parents dropping their kids off at school. Then it was up the hill and over to Black Mountain Rd, where I turned and followed it all the way to Kearny Villa Rd. I made pretty decent time on this stretch, seemed like I had something of a tailwind helping me on. Also fast on the flats on Kearny Villa Rd, taking it all the way to Aero Dr, where I turned right and got over to Linda Vista Rd. Headed south and stayed on it, except for a little jog that Strava included to get onto Ulric St for some reason, then routed back to Linda Vista Rd. Down past the old Super Bronco (it's now Taco Bomb) and almost to USD before Strava routed me (again, I'm not sure why) to turn left onto Via Las Cumbres. It was a steep downhill into Mission Valley, and I rode the brakes for much of it, not knowing this road. Right onto Friars Rd, taking it to Napa St and then back to Linda Vista Rd (??) and turning left there as it turned into Morena Blvd. Over the freeway, then right onto Taylor St and past Old Town. I think I missed a turn here, so Strava rerouted me after I got onto Rosecrans St over to Kurtz St to get to Pacific Hwy, riding by San Diego Airport Parking. I stayed pretty much on the Frontage Rd with one small exception until I got to Laurel St, where I turned left. At this point, I noticed that my rear tire was soft and had a slow leak. I figured I would try to get up the hill and see how it went. The uphill started out somewhat steep and then got insanely steep for about an eighth of a mile before it decreased and remained just very steep for a while. The entire climb was about 0.8 mi, with 230' of climbing packed into it. My tire held up, and when I got to the top I could see the bell tower in Balboa Park. So I nursed the tire the rest of the way. Laurel St turns into El Prado, and I rode this through the main part of the park before turning by the Museum of History. Strava routed me to the employee entrance for the Zoo, but I knew enough about where I was to make my way over to the Zoo parking lot, where I texted Ann to let her know I was there.

Avg speed = 16.0 mph. Total mileage = 29.9 mi
Avg power = 150 W. Weighted avg power = 170 W
Total elevation gain = 1540'
Avg heartrate = 128 bpm (Coospo), 126 bpm (Fitbit)

Didn't wait too long before she showed up, long enough to eat a banana and some peanut brittle. Then I put my bike in the car and got my backpack out. There was a restroom in front of the entrance, so I changed while Ann went to get the tickets. Then I put my backpack in the car so I didn't have to carry it around. The walk around the zoo was nice, although it was a little annoying to see so much of the zoo areas with prominent benefactor sponsorships. I captured a fairly small number of pictures. Many of the animals weren't so active, even though it was a nice day. We ended up walking around most of the grounds, skipping the reptile house. We were there for about 3 hours, which was just about right for me. Then we drove over to Convoy St and had lunch at a Korean food restaurant. It was okay, my vegetarian dish didn't have a lot of flavor, even after I dosed it with hot sauce. Home from there, where I patched my rear tire inner tube and had a quiet afternoon and evening otherwise.
