05-24-2024 Ride

Got up and talked myself into going for a ride. I headed up through the neighborhood to Matinal Rd, then over to W Bernardo Dr to get to RB Rd. Left there and over to Pomerado Rd, where I took a left and rode down to the freeway. On the way, by the Oaks North neighborhood, I saw a couple of broken pavement features (now marked with bright yellow paint) in the bike lane that might have been the cause of Rob's cycling accident. I was watching pretty closely, didn't want to repeat that event. Down to the freeway and over to BVP, which I took up to San Pasqual Rd, turning right there. Up the slight climb, then down into the San Pasqual valley. This road is sketchy for cyclists, a number of blind turns and no bike lane to speak of. I was glad to get away from it when I turned onto Old Milky Way. My pace was measured on this day, even still I didn't feel like I had strong legs. Took this road up to the 78 and turned left there to ride back into Escondido by the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, then up that climb. Hadn't ridden this climb in a while, it wasn't as long as I would have guessed, but I took it nice and slow. I stayed on the 78 past BVP, riding up to Felicita Ave, where I turned left and rode up the shorter, steeper climb then dropping down to Juniper St. Stayed on Felicita Ave all the way through town, taking it over to Valley Pkwy, where I turned left. Down the hill from there and then home the normal way. I felt better on the latter part of this ride than at the start.

Avg speed = 16.7 mph. Total mileage = 23.8 mi
Avg power = 140 W. Weighted avg power = 169 W
Total elevation gain = 1270'
Avg heartrate = 110 bpm (Coospo), 124 bpm (Fitbit)

I had some breakfast and coffee when I got home, did the dishes as well. Then I headed out into the backyard to finish weeding the last bed. Success, although it took me longer than I thought it would. Then it was a quiet afternoon of watching a little TV, doing some coding (see below), talking to Mark (mostly about retirement), and reading. Before dinner, I went out into the backyard to set up the drip sprinkler lines for the plants in the beds with wood chips. Some modifications made to the lines to account for plant location and damage to the old lines, and I replaced two of the drip sprinkler heads with spares I had. When I turned the water on, of course there were leaks, including, eventually, the two other drip sprinkler heads. So I need to go to Home Depot and get several more replacements and spares. Ugh!

A couple of updates. The left side of my face is starting to look more normal after the chemical treatment, just a little more pink than the other side. It feels normal, which is good for me. This treatment was more painful than previous ones that I can remember. At some point, I'll do the right side, but I'll give it a little time to prepare myself for the discomfort again. I've also been working on the code for my cycling stats app. I had a version that showed overlays of power, speed, and elevation on a street map, but I didn't like the quality of the maps shown at their highest resolution. So I performed a hard fork in the code and switched to a new street map version through Folium, which generates HTML code that can be displayed in a web browser. The switch for the overlay plots actually worked without too much debugging, and I ended up switching the other X-Y plots to HTML pages as well, dealing with some weaknesses in the code for the module that generates the HTML code. Not done yet, especially with additional features to either identify or display route segments (including Strava segments).
