05-15-2024 Ride

Got up and got ready to head over to meet John for a ride. I rode through the neighborhood to Matinal Rd and took it over to W Bernardo Dr. Then it was over to the Park n Ride by Ted Williams Pkwy the normal route, including turning right off Carmel Mountain Rd to get onto Rancho Carmel Dr. I got to the bike path around the same time he did, so we continued on together, heading down toward the coast. Stayed on the bike path, and I focused on riding in Zone 2 and 3, keeping my pace down while climbing and pushing a little harder when riding downhill, so I was coasting less. I kept getting out in front of him and then waiting for him to catch up. We got to the old end of the 56 bike path and rode past the barricades to see what the new section looks like. It's nice, although it's quite dark on the crossing under the freeway. We popped out onto the bike path by Sorrento Valley Rd and took it over to Carmel Valley Rd. Then we looped back to the 56 bike path via El Camino Real and retraced our route back. Again, I stayed more in Zone 2 mode on the way back, including the little climb up to Black Mountain Rd, where I dialed it back a fair amount. I was also slow on the last little steep climb on Azuaga St. We split by the Park n Ride, then I headed home by turning right onto Carmel Mountain Rd, then retracing my route until I got to Bernardo Center Dr, which I stayed on until it turned into Duenda Rd. Home the normal way from there. I thought I would be less tired at the end of such a ride, but it wasn't the case. Legs were fine, but I was still tired.

Avg speed = 14.8 mph. Total mileage = 35.7 mph
Avg power = 129 W. Weighted avg power = 151 W
Total elevation gain = 2230'
Avg heartrate = 116 bpm (Coospo), 123 bpm (Fitbit)

I got back early enough to head into the backyard and do a little weeding in the next bed, over by the fountain. Then it was time to get ready for my volunteer shift. On the way to the hospital, I got some gas, since I was running on fumes. The shift went well, it was busy again in the ED, not as crowded overall as the previous week but still nearly every bed was full at the beginning. I stayed quite busy for the first couple of hours, then there was a lull where it wasn't as busy, and it picked up near the end of my shift. Was glad to get home and have a quiet relaxing evening.
