Got up and got ready for an early morning bike ride, started before Ann woke up from the previous relatively late evening. Headed through the neighborhood to RB Rd, then through the 4S Ranch neighborhood up to Ralphs Ranch Rd, then through the normal way from there. Over to Camino del Sur, where I settled in for a Zone 2/3 ride for the most part, heading down to the 56 bike path and then to El Camino Real. Up through Del Mar Heights and then down into the flats, taking a right on San Dieguito Rd. I tried to stay around an 18 mph average on the way over to the base of the Three Witches climb. My intent for this ride was to go all out on this climb and set a PR. Mission accomplished, new PR is 7:53 (279 W, 158 bpm). Interestingly, Bisikleta did this climb on Saturday, and Arnold absolutely killed it, setting a PR of 7:45. So I didn't do better than him, need more training to build my endurance. I was really strong on the first two hills but ran out of gas on the last one. Rode home at modest pace after that, heading through the Del Sur neighborhood and then back to Camino del Sur, taking it up to Camino San Bernardo, where I turned left to get to RB Rd. Home via W Bernardo Dr. It is going to be difficult on rides like this one to try and stay in Zone 2 for the entire ride, just too many hills, with more effort going up and a recovery time on the descents. I was watching my Fitbit HR monitor during the ride, and it's obviously reading high, not sure why. My skin is irritated under my watch band, and maybe that's throwing the sensor off. Relying on the Coospo data more for now.
Avg speed = 16.4 mph. Total mileage = 35.4 mi
Avg power = 136 W. Weighted avg power = 175 W
Total elevation gain = 2070'
Avg heartrate = 118 bpm (Coospo), 135 bpm (Fitbit)
Had some toast and a cup of coffee when I got home, just hung out before heading over for my volunteer shift at the hospital. I rode over there and only when I was in the parking lot did I realize I'd forgotten my badge. Crap! So I had to ride back home and get it, which made me late for starting my shift. It was a busy day, I ran some medications up to a patient who had been admitted after being in the ED. Got screwed up helping a lady go to the restroom by disconnecting her IV pump. Will be much more careful in the future. Lots of rooms cleaned and visitors talked to, along with some patients. New nurses included Leo and Lindsay, new janitor named Josiah. Ashley was the nurse who asked me to help the patient to the restroom. After the shift, I drove home, got changed, and rode to the park to meet Emily for a hike. She did well on her final, is excited for the upcoming Las Vegas trip, where they are staying at the Mirage (soon to close) and seeing the Cirque du Soleil Beatles show (also soon to close). They are going to an interactive experience thing that also sounds interesting. Later, she is going to Cabo San Lucas with a bunch of other young women. It's good to see her doing other things outside the local area. We hiked for about an hour, then I rode home, had dinner, and started watching Dune, Part 2. Was a tiring day.
