05-16-2024 Swim/Ride

Woke up early (<>) and had some breakfast before getting ready to head over to the WWC for a swim. We are in the middle of May Gray, and the morning was a textbook case until about 10:30, when the sun started to peek out. I swam 2000 yds following the normal protocol, in a little under 41 minutes. Felt okay, noticeably slower than the last time I swam and I could feel the effort in my arms when I was using the swim pads. When I got home, I did some more weeding in the backyard bed, this time starting with the other end of the bed. I'm hoping this weeding job goes fairly quickly, there is less surface area and the weeds are generally not as dense as in the other beds. Later in the morning, I rode over to meet Avi and others for a bike ride. I rode up Aguamiel Rd to Duenda Rd, then over to Bernardo Center Dr and up Bernardo Heights Pkwy. Turning on Paseo Lucido and taking Carmel Mountain Rd to Rancho Carmel Dr, I saw I was going to be early, so I slowly rode the loop on Innovation Dr before pulling into the parking lot. Then I saw the text from Avi that they were going to be late. I still had about 20 minutes until the new meeting time, so I headed back to Carmel Mountain Rd and took it over to Highland Ranch Rd, which is a flat to downhill shortcut to get to Ted Williams Pkwy. Turned right there and rode back up and then down to Shoal Creek Dr, which is another shortcut, this time back to Rancho Carmel Dr. Back up this gradual climb to the meet-up point, where Avi, Jose, and Gary were almost ready. We did the so-called Lori Loop, heading back down Rancho Carmel Dr to the 56 bike path and taking it down to the Santa Fe Farms overpass to get to Carmel Valley Rd. I was either leading out on the climbing sections or riding with Gary on the flatter sections. I stayed with the pack on the return to Camino del Sur, getting out ahead on the last little climb up to the stoplight. After the turn, we rode up to Paseo del Sur, with me in front at the turn and Avi not too far behind. Turn there, taking it to Potomac Ridge Rd and using that to get to Nicole Ridge Rd, then Camino San Bernardo. Everybody was riding together here, then Gary and I got out in front on the gradual climb that followed. We waited for the others just before the turn onto Camino del Norte. This turn was closed, as they were paving the road (it really needed it), but the others decided to go through. We ended up riding for a short time on freshly paved asphalt, I could hear it sticking to my tires. Got onto the road section away from fresh paving and rode back to the intersection with Bernardo Center Dr, where I turned off while the others headed back to their office. From there for me, it was the normal way home past HP. I pushed myself a little harder at times on this ride than I thought I would, but it was fine at the end.

Avg speed = 15.4 mph. Total mileage = 30.8 mi
Avg power = 134 W. Weighted avg power = 166 W
Total elevation gain = 2050'
Avg heartrate = 123 bpm (Coospo), 121 bpm (Fitbit)

When I got home, I had some lunch and a short nap (I was tired). Then I started getting my bike ready for the Saturday ride. Began with replacing my old chain. The old one and the new one came with QuickLink disconnects, which made replacement easier. I did have to use my chain link breaker tool to shorten the new chain to the same length, but it went smoothly. A little bit of difficulty rerouting the new chain through the rear derailleur, which I had to do twice. And I had to figure out how to align the QuickLinks so that they engaged. I got it all put together and had a quick ride up the street to pull the links into their locked positions. I replaced my rear tire with the special tire I use for significant rides and got started on the front tire before I needed to stop and get ready to drive down to Balboa Park for a couple of Fringe Festival shows. It was opening night. Traffic down there was heavy, but luckily we left early enough that we got to the small theatre in time. Here's a summary of the three shows we saw:
  • Forest of Truth - had 4 actors, 3 of them Japanese, and the gist of the story was about the queen of the forest needing love energy to be revitalized. So she and her helper find a couple of people to fall in love. There was some humorous audience participation, and the show was bawdy, PG-13. It was definitely weird and fringe-y.
  • We had time to kill after the first show, so we headed over to Panama 66, a bar/restaurant by the sculpture garden, and had a drink while we listened to swing music and watched the dancers.
  • Shunga Alert - had 3 actors, all from the earlier show, and two narrators who used shadow puppets on the big screen to tell the story. This one was NC-17 and even weirder than the earlier show. I enjoyed the titillating parts more than Ann did. We saw the world premiere, and the script and staging were a little rough around the edges, particularly from the narrator parts. In the story, a guy breaks up with a famous influencer because the guy is bad at sex, so he and two other characters - a sex robot and a hologram of a sexy young woman - go off in search of a solution for this guy's dilemma. On the way, we learn a lot about the curious and strange sexual customs of the Japanese people.
  • Anthony Prezutti, Comedy Mentalist - in hindsight, we should have known better. This was the last show of the evening, in the puppet theater starting at 10:30. There were very few people in the audience, perhaps 3 paying customers along with some Fringe Festival volunteers (including a lady who wore a puppet boa for most of the time we saw her during both shows) and the performers from the previous show. He did a couple of mental tricks that were mildly amusing and vaguely sexual, but he wasn't very funny (it's hard to be funny with such a small audience). He shortened his show, thankfully, and we got out of there and headed home.
