Woke up around 5:30 after a relatively short night, since we were out at the concert the previous evening. I mapped out a route for me and John to take starting from his house, then I got ready and headed out early to add some extra miles. Through the neighborhood, taking Capilla Rd up to Matinal Rd and then to RB Rd. Then I rode through the 4S Ranch neighborhood, taking the long way by the water tower before coming back to Camino del Sur. From there, I took Camino del Norte past the freeway and, seeing that I was a little pressed for time, took the shortcut through the parking lot that Avi showed me, to get to Ave of Science. Then it was over to Rancho Carmel Dr and on down to Sabre Springs Pkwy, which I stayed on past Poway Rd. On an impulse, and since I had a little extra time, I rode up the Springbrook Dr climb, which is something of a challenge, not so long but 7% grade for a time. Up to Springhurst Dr, then over to John's house the normal way from there. He was just finishing getting ready, so we took off soon after. Down Springhurst Dr and over to Sabre Springs Pkwy, which we took back to Rancho Carmel Dr and then to Carmel Mountain Rd, turning left there. A little morning commute traffic to contend with but it didn't last long. Then we had a couple of small climbs up to the top, then dropping down to the turn to stay on Carmel Mountain Rd. Past the high school and then turning right onto Black Mountain Rd. We took it over to Carmel Valley Rd, turning left and riding all the way down to Del Mar Heights Rd. Turned right there and took it to Carmel Canyon Rd, where we turned left and rode down to Carmel Country Rd. Most of this stretch, from the Black Mountain Rd, was flat or downhill, with just a couple of minor climbs. So it was a fairly fast run. Then we got onto the 56 bike path and started heading back. I dialed my pace back here, legs were feeling tired and John was slowing down as well. We took this path all the way back to Sabre Springs Pkwy, then rode back to John's house via Poway Rd to Springhurst Dr. That last little climb was also slow for me, but I held up okay. Vivian had made smoothies and had them ready when we got back. They were cold and sweet, just what I needed. John and I chatted for a while before I used the bathroom and then started heading home, the normal way via Pomerado Rd. Even though my legs were tired, I felt pretty good about how much I pushed myself on the return, not really letting up and actually increasing my average speed by 0.3 mph. I took the Bernardo Center Rd turn and was slow and plodding up those last two little hills, was glad to get to the top there. Body felt fine at the end of the ride, no aches or pains, just tired muscles.

Had about an hour of free time when I got home before I had to get ready for my volunteer shift. It was really busy in the ED, they weren't fully staffed for ER doctors, and lots of people were in the waiting room. So I was perhaps busier than usual on my shift, which made the time pass more quickly. At the end of the shift, I got to go into the ICU to borrow a bladder scanner, which was a new experience. When my shift was over, I rode over to Ponce's to have dinner with Charlie and talk about retirement experiences and preparedness. Looking forward to when he retires, he's a good guy to hang out with, and we'll probably do more stuff when he has additional free time.
