This was a significant ride, although not originally intended to be that way. I rode over to John's house, was a little late in getting started and so I pushed the pace harder than usual on the way. Rode through the neighborhood to Matinal Rd, then up to W Bernardo Dr and over RB Rd to Pomerado Rd. From there it was the normal way to his place. Got there a little before 7:30, Jayden was there showing off his scooter skills. We headed out on a route I had planned, riding up to Scripps-Poway Pkwy and turning left to go downhill and climb back up to Kirkham Dr, where we turned right. That lengthened the climb a little bit, I think, and I waited for him after it started to flatten out. We then headed over to Danielson St to get back to Scripps-Poway Pkwy, where we continued heading east until we got to the turnoff for Sycamore Canyon Rd. Turned there and then took a left on the road to ride down the steep descent to Garden Rd. We turned right here, as I had never seen the little neighborhood that's at its end. A little climb up into the neighborhood, nice houses and secluded, then back down to Garden Rd. Once we got there, John proposed a sprint, and so we both went all out for a couple of hundred meters, then slowed down and rode up to Poway Rd. Right turn there, taking the climb up nearly to the first top but turning onto Sunrise Ranch Rd to see a new (for me) neighborhood. Down to Sunrise Canyon Rd, taking a left, then a right onto Ipava Dr. I thought our significant climbing was done, but the little stretch after the turn was 12% grade and a real workout. Thankfully, it was short, but John really struggled to get to the top. Then we turned onto Donart Dr and took it down to Tierra Bonita Rd. John wanted to show me something after we turned right, so we rode into the cemetery and saw the plot where May was buried. It was emotional for the both of us. His name is on the gravestone, and it is his plan that, when he dies, he'll be buried on top of her. That could change, depending on how long he is with Vivian. But such a decision is way in the future. I'm glad he shared this memory and spot with me. On the way back out, we stopped again, and he showed me where Tony Gwynn is buried. It's a simple plot as well for a great and humble man. Back to the road, which we took over to Twin Peaks Rd and then rode up to Espola Rd. Left turn and up the gradual climb at a slower pace for me. We turned left onto Lake Poway Rd and took it over to Summer Sage Rd, then wound over to Bridlewood Rd to get back to Espola Rd. Down the nice gradual descent into RB, then under the freeway and up the hill to Via del Campo, where we turned and rode over by the HP site (not for too much longer, it seems). We started riding back to his house, following the reverse time trial route until we got to the little shortcut through the parking lot over to Ave of Science. I showed him this trick, then we got onto Rancho Carmel Dr and rode it back to Sabre Springs Pkwy and then up Springhurst Dr back to his house. Vivian made smoothies for us and came out to chat with us about yards and improving landscapes. She is a very outgoing person, nice to talk to. I rode home the usual way on Pomerado Rd, taking the Bernardo Center route to Duenda Rd.

I didn't have a lot of time after I got home before I needed to get ready for my volunteer shift at the hospital. Nothing super unusual about the shift. The ED was quite busy throughout the afternoon, and there was a true emergency case that came in near the end of my shift of somebody who had been discovered in a pool and needed to be resuscitated. That case got a lot of attention from the staff. Angela asked me to help her move a patient with pancreatitis up to a hospital room, and that was a first for me. Cimi is the tall nurse with dark brown hair, kinda aloof. She's been around, but I finally registered her name. Johnny told me that once upon a time he was in a rock band, need to learn more about that as time goes by. He's a good nurse, well suited to working in the ED. After my shift, I drove toward home and then met Blair at RB Community Park. He was back from Hawaii, where he had a minor puncture of his eardrum while scuba diving, which was made worse when he went to urgent care. It should heal but he's sensitive to loud noises while it gets better. He told me the news about the planned HP San Diego site closure by October 2025, associated with the establishment of some kind of San Diego tech center for HP that will host about 100 employees. This was sad news indeed, not unexpected, but I thought it wouldn't happen so soon. I also learned from the brothers that Mom had been taken in an ambulance to the hospital emergency room for atrial fibrillation. Ben was over at the house when it all happened, she had been complaining of chest pain since the previous evening.
